The team caring for his mother should have been aware that he was a dependent child. Where was the social worker? Where was CPS? Why didn’t the team make a plan for the mother about what she wanted to happen for her son. By the time she had brain cancer (Mets form melanoma) her cancer was NOT curable. So everyone on the team knew it was a matter of time, and no one did the uncomfortable task of broaching her death with her and her child? What an UTTER failure of his health care team. As an oncology nurse, I’m appalled.

@@aftonair Yes!!!! I'm a professional speaker and its very common for nervous speakers to use like and ums. I found the content of what he was conveying very mature. Especially for someone his age who has been through trauma.

Someone at the hospital failed. A social worker should have been involved before his mom became incapacitated.

Wow. I can't even begin to imagine what he went through. I'm so sorry for his loss. He is a VERY strong young man. It sounds like his foster parents are pretty amazing. I'm so glad they found each other. What a sweet story.

This young man is an amazing soul. There needs to be more support for families that are caregivers. Could not imagine facing all of this so young. Thank god for those who stepped up to help and guide him. 💚

Kudos to Jacob and his foster parents. I’’m so sorry for the loss of his mom. He is overcoming a tragic loss so I’m happy he has loving supportive foster parents to guide and love him. He is already paying it forward. ❤️🇨🇦🙏

AMEN I put myself in foster care 🎉 and there is a child in my house who left home and placed himself in my care. It is what it is. You have to do what's best for you. I'm glad he's getting help.

It is tragic how his mom passed!! It is difficult for anyone. I am proud of you for standing up for yourself!! You are intelligent, friendly, sensitive and a beautiful young man, and your mom is very proud, Im sure!! Nest of everything to you!❤❤😊

Unfortunately alot of us never had grandparents or normal families. Alot of people in this world dont appreciate how lucky they are to have normal families without dysfunction. The mother did a great job raising him and gave him a great sense of awareness enough to know he had to have shelter and a family to take care of him so he could accomplish what he wanted out of life instead of hitting the streets homeless and doing things that other kids wouldve done.

I should've done this. Instead I petitioned to marry an older man when I was 16. To leave an alcoholic abusive household where I was the mother to my parents and 3 younger siblings. I should've joined the army or just done this for all 4 of us kids. His mom did an amazing job raising him. I'm so glad he did this and held himself together for a better future instead of crumbling. I wish this kid all of the best in the world, he deserves it.

Yeah, that would have been a better choice. But... you were a child! Do you know anyone who's around the age of 16? Can you picture them? Do they seem like they have the wisdom to think through all those life-altering, adult choices? Would they be well-equipt to comprehend all the consequences of each path? It sounds like some horrible things happened to you. I would try and give yourself some grace on the choices you made. You were a child, and you didn't know what you didn't know.

My heart breaks for him, that he had to endure so much in watching his mom slip away and then live w/the devastation of loss. His mom should be incredibly proud of how she raised such a smart young man to know that he needed to reach out to those who wanted to help and to guide him to his adult life. A teen girl who lived in the foster care shelter I worked in reported her own parents. She was well-behaved, studious, and just wanted a stable home for the remaining years to adulthood and she got that. It's so sad when teens have to make a decision to enter foster care for a variety of reasons.

This poor boy! I know what it's like to lose a parent young. I was lucky to have my mother until I was an adult but my brother wasn't so lucky. He really changed after she was gone. It's wonderful to see that there are success stories! Good luck to him. His mom did a great job, she would be so proud 💕💕!

My heart breaks for him because I know that pain. I still had my mom, but she was here on a green card since 1952 nand couldn’t drive. We had no medical care, there were no GoFundMe sites and people RAN from the word cancer. I am so glad that he got that chance.

Hello there, I was wondering, if I can share with you the most important thing ever. God the Father sent His holy Son Jesus to earth, to be born of a virgin. He grew up and died on the cross for our sins. Then He was put into a tomb for 3 days, after that Abba Father raised Jesus to life. He appeared to people, and went back to heaven. Like maybe you could just focus on like the good stuff... this kid like pulled himself up from a like awful situation. 🙄 If you were being interviewed, how many times would you say "um" or "uh"? Like is a filler word just like those... and he's had bigger things to worry about and maybe he was nervous about being interviewed. Also, the kid is 19... I'm sure how you spoke at 19 annoyed the older adults in your life too.
