Most people are more likely to associate Colorado with tall Rocky mountains… rather than tornadoes. Between 1952 and 2010, Weld County Colorado reported more tornadoes than any other county in the States. *Note: Weld Co. is 2-3 times larger than most counties.
LEE CYCLOGENESIS
Midlevel westerly winds crossing high terrain subsides and warms when it comes down the leeward side of mountains. This often leads to the formation of a cyclone in a process called Lee Cyclogenesis. The taller the mountains, the stronger the cyclone tends to be. Colorado has the highest mean elevation in the US and thus the lee cyclone response is often the strongest there. *NOTE: MT Whitney in California is the highest peak in the US. A Lee Cyclone often sets the stage for stormy weather.
UPSLOPE REGIME
In several other fascinating ways the topography of Colorado can enhance thunderstorm and tornado development. Thunderstorms tend to get an earlier start in Colorado as moisture rich air runs into mountains and is forced up. Once upslope storms develop, they tend to take their time organizing into supercells… If they do at all. In the right environment, these storms can organize into supercells as mean as any.
DENVER CYCLONE & DCVZ
Smaller scale terrain features like the Palmer Ridge also help the Rockies channel winds into localized swirls and zones of convergence. When a “Denver Cyclone” and or a Denver Convergence Vorticity Zone (DCVZ) forms during unstable conditions, the chance of a tornado increases significantly. But generally these are weaker non-mesocyclonic tornadoes more commonly known as landspouts.
Landspouts lean toward the weaker side of the EF scale,
Once you understand Lee cyclogenesis, the upslope regime and many of the mesoscale features that can enhance lift, convergence and vorticity you’ll understand these Colorado tornadoes aren't magic…. Just physics.

@@Cherrytea558 Instead of high, I think you mean jacked up. Like how they tend to jack up their viewers' hopes with the promise of good footage, and then end up failing by going to the wrong places and not shooting good footage 😂 But Pecos Hank here gets shit done, with precision, skill, _and_ while taking the proper precautions instead of recklessly running- er, driving into immediate danger. I say immediate because storm chasing in itself is dangerous, but PH only gets as close as he knows he can without getting himself in a place where he might not be able to make it out. Also, he's funny, very nice and cares for animals, and is just an all-around great guy.

As a citizen of colorado, I can confirm that a large number of our tornadoes happen in the eastern parts of the state. They occasionally happen along the front range and elsewhere, but they are not usually a threat! We usually see a killer tornado every few years such as the Windsor tornado of 5/22/08, or the Holly tornado of 3/28/07. The strongest tornadoes we can get have an EF3 rating, but most tornadoes in colorado are either land spouts, or have a rating of EF2 or weaker.

After living in Colorado my whole life, this video gave me quite a different perspective. I used to live out in Weld County as a kid, and I remember getting annoyingly frequent tornado watch alerts on my TV, and I never really understood why they happened so frequently, my parents had always told me that the mountains stopped tornadoes from forming. But after seeing this video, it put the mountains in a whole new light. So, the mountains can almost boost the chances of a tornado forming (If I understood the video correctly). Never would’ve guessed that myself! Amazing video as always, Hank, hope you stay safe out there!

absolutely incredible content. informative, insightful and illuminating. these videos should be mandatory in science classes around the globe - a six minute video like this could really inspire a child and spark the next generation of storm chasers. as other fans have said in these comments, you truly outclass all other storm/weather videography. to imagine you're doing this as a one man operation is truly astonishing (even the music!). this is what youtube was created for. thank you, so very much.

Yep, pretty incredible presentation. The photography is so magnificent too! I don't know if Pecos has been recognized with any awards for these producions, but he should be if he hasn't! And like you said, singlehandedly. Which is pretty amazing considering the danger involved with chasing storms and recording on the fly. The talent of this one man band here is just unmistakeable, and the content exceptional well beyond anything else on KZbin. I'm also sure you're right that he's inspiring new generations of storm chasers and content producers by the carload!

Your videos are truly both entertaining and educational! Just a minor correction on Colorado's tornado fatality count: Since 1952 there has been five tornado-related deaths. Thunderstorms are essentially water and ice. Dew points are a good measure of how much moisture is in the atmosphere which contributes greatly to the instability of the atmosphere. If the dews are too low, no storms.

This is so interesting to me as I live on the edge of what could be considered Tornado Alley for Colorado. I'm roughly 30 mins away from the Northern part, and 30 mins away from the Palmer Divide. This video really interested me because we get a handful of storms that have hail that turn tornadic as they continue on towards Limon, and it can get scary at times. Thank you for explaining this in such great detail!

I'm in love with your channel. Hi from canada! Since a kid I wished to become a storm chaser, but growing up, with my dislike of maths and all, I figured it maybe wasnt for me. Your channel gives me the beautiful images I love to see. One day maybe I'll travel to the states and join those weather tourists... but nothing fascinates me more than storms since childhood. I'm the kind that goes outside to watch the fury unfold from a safe space. It gives me shivers. So awesome...

As always, great video Hank! You're cool calm demeanor, plethora of knowledge, and stellar photography & video skills truly make your content soar far above the other storm chasers. *ESPECIALLY* since you're not flying off the handle and screaming at the top of your lungs repeating the obvious over and over and over... AND OVER AGAIN, like some guys (cough - Reed.... Ugh). I just can't watch any of those guys anymore without muting the video, of I can stomach them at all. Looking forward to more content. Be well - Cheers! -H.B.

Hi Hank. Been kind of a slow year, which is a good thing for the public at large. This video was fascinating to me. I lived in Ft. Collins for five years starting in 1999, when I was an Extension Rangeland Management Specialist with Colorado State U. I mostly worked on the Eastern Plains, especially in Weld County, where the head County Agent was a great guy. At that time the number of tornadoes on the EPs was just being recognized. One factor that was cited at that time was all the extra moisture in the air from irrigation along the Front Range, both cropland and bluegrass lawns belonging to people from New Jersey who didn't know where they were living now. The other factors you covered were all new to me. Another highly educational video. I live in Ord now, near the very center of Nebraska. I always keep a sharp eye on northeastern Colorado, because many of the storms that hatch there drift NE across hereabouts. When I see weather developing there, I generally say something like "Here comes another b******d out of Colorado." Another area that has more tornadoes than is generally recognized is the Nebraska Sandhills. When the weather is acting up, I'll often watch the radar far into the night. I've seen as many as 50 radar-indicated tornadoes west of here in one event. Of course, they are radar-indicated and some may not be actual tornadoes, and a lot probably never get to the ground. Of those that do, their chances of hitting something are nil, as the Sandhills are even less populated than eastern Colorado. It's entirely possible that there are touchdowns at night that run for miles and nobody even notices. There's nothing to tear up but grass, which is pretty wind-resistant. I know I've seen a number of daytime funnels out there that didn't hit anything. In that country, if you're on a hilltop, you can see a long tube one from 50 miles away. Hope you and yours are doing well.
