This was gorgeous ! I live in Michigan. Northern mi. Tornados are rare but when they do hit, it's all hardwoods so it's super devastating. I lived out in the manistee forest. I woke up one morning to all kinds of noise. Crashes, bangs, wind. I looked out my sliding doors from the bed and all I saw was grey...then as my eyes adjusted I could tell it was a wall of grey water n debris whipping sideways. A tornado was 20 ft. Off my back porch. My family n I were already in it. No time to find shelter. Even wake up the kids n get them to the bathroom. I just lit a cigarette. When it was over, my house was still intact. Nothing else was though. My van got smashed, my power pole was thrown, I was trapped in the woods with trees down n twisted like corkscrews. It took two weeks to saw through all the trees just to get out of my driveway. It was a hopping tornado. My neighbors property looked like the Tunguska blast. Oddly...I had little starter peat pots for seeds along the rail of my deck. They stayed perfectly in place. I got very lucky.

I love the thoughtful perspective because it is completely true that drought is far more of a risk than tornadoes. Drought and flooding cause orders of magnitude more damage and loss of life worldwide than do tornadoes. People often worry about those things that are least impactful to their lives.

This reminds me of the time a super cell was moving towards me in northwest Indiana. I went outside and looked west and saw lower clouds racing south. When I turned to the east, I saw lower clouds racing to the north. So weird. I then realized it was a tornado. I got in my car and made it about 3 blocks east before the road was blocked with fallen trees. I tried to go north and there was trees down. To the south was trees down. I could not go anywhere. Turned out to be a F2 tornado. Its amazing how you can be in one spot and have no wind yet a block or 2 away you have 100+ mph winds. It is like pulling over in the center divide of a highway with cars going 60+ mph in both directions next to you but where you are there is no wind. The winds in different directions cancel each other.

Per usual, the best chaser videos on KZbin by a wide margin. Hank, your videos perfectly capture the intensity, beauty, danger and eeriness associated with Supercells/Tornados. As a chaser myself (I also shoot video/stills, but me thinks they stinks ;)), I can attest personally just how insane these storms can be; unpredictable storm motion is scary as well as super dangerous and, as we all know with Tornados, although they "usually" (I say that lightly) track NE, the direction is never a certainty and Mother Nature is a skilled poker player; she never shows her hand and you can't read her true intentions. Stay safe and keep up the amazing work, bro! I'm also a big fan of The Southern Backtones; beautiful music! As a side note, look up Aric Improta on KZbin if you want to see one of the best drummers ever! Video is from the 2012 Guitar Center Drum Off; you won't be disappointed! Cheers, brother. 😀

I miss tornadoes that travel NE. May 5 CO tornadoes traveled due North. OK Tornadoes on May 9th moved East. These tornadoes did little U's. The Dodge city bonanza on May 24 moved north-northwest. and the Bennington monster on May 25, moved East-southeast. Rock on Mike! Thanks for watching.

She was raised on the prairies of North Dakota, and when she married my dad they were just east of St. Paul, MN, not far from the St. Croix river - the western border of WI - it's all woodlands region. As an adult tornadoes are scary/thrilling and the weather drama of supercells can be so beautiful. Still, I'll bet you've seen some pretty hairy stuff in your chases, huh? Cheers!
