0:00 Introduction to the Test
We’re here to answer the big question - does the Chevy Colorado ZR2 set the new standard for off-road mid-size pick-ups? Is it the true off-roader that we really want, or is it just another rebadged trim line.
0:38 Location - Gateway Canyons Resort
The proving ground is Gateway Canyon Resort in Colorado, just 60 km east of famed Moab, Utah. While testing a truck on-road could be done anywhere, and trails are abundant everywhere, this resort also boasts a three kilometre long trophy truck test track, all contained in the state that bears the trucks name, creating a perfect storm of terrain to test the new ZR2.
1:21 Off-Road Modifications
Chevy has taken the Z71 and literally cut some corners. The front bumper has been chopped allowing the tires to access more of the oncoming rock, and with the rear bumper, they’ve removed the steps.
They’ve added decent rock sliders, an aluminum skid plate to shield the radiator and the oil pan, and another to shield the transfer case. The body armour and frame take the brunt of the beating leaving the important bits unscathed.
Lockers are a key off-road mod for most wheelers, but both rear and front lockers come standard on the ZR2, thanks to the tinkering of some of the engineers from the Hummer program.
With the tires fully aired up, the truck easily managed these stone steps using the rear and front lockers.
1:55 Rock Crawling Review
Having said that, this mid-size pickup will go where no full size can with its skinnier profile and shorter wheelbase. Off-road essentials include hill descent control and a couple of front tow hooks.
Compared to the Z71, you get a 3.5” wider wheel track for stability, and an extra 2” of lift to clear obstacles. On the trail, it managed to get us between some tight trees and past some ugly rocks without any problems.
2:49 Fast and Furious Off-Road
Let’s not call it high speed but higher speed. There are three traction control modes - the first gives you both ABS and stability control - perfect for slippery winter conditions, next is off-road mode, which dials back the traction control letting you slide the back end out more and deliver more throttle out of soft dirt corners. And finally, you can turn traction control off, which the engineers call ‘fun’ mode.
3:28 Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve Technology
You also get the most important feature from their partnership with Canadian firm Multimatic. Using DSSV, code for Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve technology, the aluminum bodies each house two spool valves providing both compression and rebound damping which are optimized for everyday driving. But for off-road use, a third, piston-mounted spool valve delivers additional, specially tuned, compression damping.
The control through the corners and straights is stellar, and I can’t tell you the number of times my helmet bounced off the roof as I reached for more hang time. And I was one only one of many. Is it a race ready trophy truck? No. But a trophy truck costs ten times the amount, and it won’t get you to work the next day.
4:28 ZR2 vs Raptor vs TRD Pro
Multimatic’s DSSV technology was originally developed for F1 cars, so it came as no surprise that they’ve been able to dramatically enhance the on-road manners of an off-road truck.
Compared to both the TRD Pro and the Raptor, we felt less roll in the corners, less nose-dive under hard braking, and more responsive steering. The ride is a little harsher than the Toy or the Ford, with a faster return to stability after hitting bumps in the pavement.
5:38 What’s Next - Future Features
At the end of the day, and after a couple of beers, Chevy engineers asked 4WDrive what we would like to see changed. We asked for the rock sliders to be mounted on the frame rather than the body, and the diesel exhaust pipe moved a little forward and higher so we didn’t occasionally ding it while crawling. “Give us space for a least 33” tires, prewire the truck for a winch and LED lights up front, and what about a decent compressor and air hoses running internally close to all four wheels.”
6:11 The Bottom Line
For most outdoor enthusiasts, this stock ZR2 will provide more accessible off-road terrain than other pickups, while at the same time delivering exceptional on-road daily driving manners.
What’s really exciting is what this truck can become in the hands and wrenches of off-road enthusiasts.

Diesel may not be for *everyone;* even given its advantages, there will always be people who hate diesel engines and demand its discontinuation from production. I believe that car buyers who need a small displacement diesel, or even want a diesel engine for their small truck, small RV, etc. should be allowed to buy their vehicle with a diesel engine if they so choose. :)

You guys added my wishlist at the end. Front bumper ready for a winch and lights. 33'' as a factory option. Get the rock sliders off the body and mounted to the frame. And a factory compressor with outlets at the tires. Damn I couldn't have said it better myself. I am sure the aftermarket is gonna step in. I couldn't find a ZR2 anywhere and had to order it. The dealer said he can't keep them in stock. People come to look at a Colorado see the zr2 and buy it instead of the other trim levels. He had 12 Colorado's on the lot but can't keep the zr2 in stock. He was willing to make me a really good deal on Colorado Z71 but I said no.

strocat25: I still have a 2000 zr2 s10 pick but mine has an all aluminum L33 5.3L LS swap and a 70mm turbo. It's all blacked out and mean as hell. I'm still on 31x10.5s and I've gone through shit my brother's 74 ford bronco on 35s didn't get through and the jeep with us on 33s wouldn't even try it. I drove through that pit of muddy hell and then had to drive back through it to get back. It was a bumpy ride for sure. I caught a stump or something and all I saw was sky and some trees while the watchers got to see my under carriage. The iron cross pendent on my rear view mirror was wrapped around the mirror's arm 3 time when I landed on the other side. I'll never believe these new ones will live up to what the (1996ish-2004 or so) zr2 could handle. I've jumped mine more than I can remember yet the frame is still straight and nothing ever broke. Everything about them was over built except for the front differential and the engine. They should have came with a 5.3 from the factory even though my modded 4.3L did work it's ass off for 190,000 miles.

This is the most in depth review i have seen on the ZR2 so far, thank you for that. Seems like the Raptor is not the right truck to compare this too, i get that Chevy benchmarked the Raptor which is great but you can't do a head to head comparison cause its a $75,000 1/2 ton truck vs a $45,000 midsize truck. Would love to see a three way head to head comparison with the TRD PRO and the Frontier PRO 4X.
@4WDMagazine
@4WDMagazine 7 жыл бұрын
That would be a great three-way comparison. We'll see what we can do. The Ford Raptor and TRD Pro were only compared to the ZR2's handling on the road as they are off-road editions with off-road suspension. You're absolutely right that a full head to head comparison (Raptor vs ZR2) doesn't make sense.

DesertWolf that might be the "suggested" msrp from the factory but you show me a dealer anywhere im the country that has one listed at that price. Every Raptor I've seen comes with a $10-$15k mark up. Add on the options and almost every single one of them lists for $65-$75k. Where as the ZR2, I've seen several listed between $45-$48k.
@4WDMagazine
@4WDMagazine 7 жыл бұрын
The Raptor and TRD Pro were only used to compare the on road performance of the suspension - not overall truck vs truck vs truck. You're absolutely right Rodion - the Raptor and ZR2 are not in the same class. A comparison with the TRD Pro is valid, and in the best case scenario you would perform the test with identical tires.

Great Vid! I am really close to buying one. I liked what you said about the wanted additions. I am not a "hardcore offroader" or anything but some things like mountable fog lights(like many of the custom bumpers have), upgraded headlights (top of the line model should have at least HID if not LED, and if you can fit larger tires, maybe put it up 1" (apparently people say the bottom of the suspension is prone to hit rocks when offroad so maybe it would give it a little bit more clearance). Since it is a good on road vehicle as well, maybe a bit more quality on the inside, something different in the gauges then the typical Colorado aside from the offroad data (ie, layout, color, quality, something), push to start would be nice(personal preference since they have android auto play and the wireless charger) and just better materials on the dash and screen area. I was never a truck person, (Subaru) but since I am looking for something with more utility, and sporty I was looking at the V8 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, but I really like the ZR2. Now for absolute perfection, how about putting up a contract between GM and a Performance part seller and letting us add a Supercharger like Mallett's. They claim to already have a relationship anyway. I would pay 55K to 60K for that, and the rest should keep the price under 50K since most of those features come standard on higher end model vehicles these days.

Thanks for this video. Had a 2001 S-10 ZR2...loved it. Really capable on/off road. However, it always needed more power and the interior was junk plastic. This new Colorado ZR2, however, is knocking on my door...may have to test drive one. 308 hp with all the modern interior goodies...hmmm! Agree with having an air compressor (or CTIS system).

@4WDMagazine
@4WDMagazine 6 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, in Canada, we pronounce it Zed, same as the rest of the world. The U.S. is the only english speaking country to pronounce it Zee. Wikipedia says, "In most English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, the letter's name is zed /zɛd/, reflecting its derivation from the Greek zeta (this dates to Latin, which borrowed X, Y, and Z from Greek, along with their names), but in American English its name is zee /ziː/, analogous to the names for B, C, D, etc., and deriving from a late 17th-century English dialectal form.[2]

Alright. That's a lame chevy rigged event :(. Hopefully you guys can give us a comparison at least between the TRD Pro and the ZR2. I think if GM wants to mention the Raptor when they talk about the ZR2 then it just became part of a comparison that should consist of more than a behind the scenes on road comparison. I am curious how the spool valve shocks compare to the Raptor in the intended environment. I'd be really surprised if the ZR2 rode better on AND off-road even with those fancy DSSV shocks. ZR2 is a cool little truck and I like some of what GM had done with it. The front locker was a real nice addition something you don't normally see, let alone on IFS. There for sure needs to be a TRD Pro comparison to the ZR2. See ya.

Why would you change the suspension? Thats the whole reason it does as well at crawling as it does

In the Toyota your head smashes the roof and the pokey seat stabs you in the ass, then you go on the internet and deny it to try and keep the resale up so you can sell it soon.

But isnt the raptor a full size truck.... if anythjng, the zr2 is a baby raptor
@4WDMagazine
@4WDMagazine 7 жыл бұрын
You are correct, it is sort of a baby Raptor. Just to be clear, the comparison was solely to show how other off-road suspensions (Raptor, TRD Pro) feel on-road compared to the ZR2's multimatic suspension. The DSSV multimatic suspension in the ZR2 is tighter, more responsive, with less float, less bounce than Raptor or TRD.

Can't compare, ZR2 has a stronger boxed frame, more powerful V-6 engine, 4 wheel disc brakes, and front and rear locker, not available on Toy

They'll last a long time. We beat the crap out of them jumping those trucks for days. Way more punishment than any owner would put it through.

A truck is a truck. Quit being so damn picky.
@4WDMagazine

It is. But buying a truck is like hiring someone to do a job you need done right. If they don't have the qualifications and tools, they fail - and so will the truck.

Shouldn’t it say fix it like a typical broke down GM junk? Look at all the videos of Obummer motors buying this junk back and guys actually driving straight to a ford dealer and getting a Raptor, bankrupt junk never again for us!!
