You buy a truck that meets your needs and I don't see a reason to bash someone for buying on those reasons. @@chevid9015 I recently bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport. I test drove a new 2019 OR 4Runner, new 2019 OR Tacoma, new 2018 OR Tacoma and used 2017 OR Tacoma. Although its a matter of opinion, to me the Sport felt much smoother on-road, turned better and even accelerated better. I also love the scoop, painted fenders and bumpers. The overall majority of people who buy these trucks will never need that rear locker on the OR. It was a hard decision but I'm very happy with it. I've already done some off-roading , up and done steep hills, mud and trails around Nevada, and the Sport did them easily, and that's with the stock all season Toyo A30 Tires on 4H. I havent even needed 4L and neither will the majority of people who buy these.

Another great video. I looked at both and went with the 2018 ZR2. Because of price and just the total package. It has everything that the Taco has and more at a lower price. Mine even came with the Cat-Back single exit exhaust system the the polished tip with the Chevy emblem. And it still came in over two thousand less than the TRD Pro. Listen. Back in the day, my buddies and I would drive tacos everywhere. They were our choice. You have to just get over the fan club mentality and just check out the contender. I for one DO NOT care about resale value, because I simply hold onto my vehicles. Just open your mind and free yourself. Take the red pill. 😉
@thomaspaul2465
@thomaspaul2465 6 жыл бұрын
ZR2 is missing push button start and does not have auto dimming and adaptive cruise control. Tacoma also has the howling diff problem. The upgraded exhaust I believe adds 10HP so you have a much better power plant at about 318HP. The Tacoma tows 6800 instead of only 5000Lbs and the Taco beats it for ground clearance in every aspect and its smaller for tight trails. The ZR2 does have its disadvantages but I would have taken the ZR2 just for the power alone and better throttle response but to say it has everything the Taco has is not being honest.

Well you might still win on the resale value. In a Facebook group for the new Colorado, a guy sold his diesel for $33k and bought it originally for $34k. Not bad, it was an auction though. Not a ZR2 either, but you should expect it to resell higher with one than the other Colorados.

Only issue we have had with it is as listed: -Radiator was leaking -Bad spark plugs -Minor oil leak. -Paint is coming off -Radio went out -New fuel pump Everything else is stock on the truck. I do not see any other truck lasting that long (still maintaining stock) besides the old ford diesels.

Own a 2017 TRD pro. My favorite thing about it that I don’t get from others is that it just feels like a truck. It’s stout, looks the part and feels like a sturdy, tough pick up. I don’t need it to fly down the highway, I don’t need all of the added creature comforts, it has most of them and they’re nice but it’s just built sound like an old truck. I don’t like jacking up my trucks so since the fox suspension was already there I’ve been more then pleased, ecstatic if anything that, that’s was included. Only burden is going on trips with passengers as the rear of the cab isn’t quite a large luxurious space haha. But I use the truck for everything. It’s my work truck, my daily driver and my weekend warrior. It keeps up with everything I do in my day to day. The two biggest set backs here and one isn’t per Toyota is those god awful tires. I’ve had 2 blow out on me within 10k miles. Right between the tread. They are pretty terrible. Waiting to slap on the KO2s here soon. It’s a disappointment Toyota equips these things with them because the truck is meant for so much more. Second is the entune. What an excuse for a head unit. The Bluetooth works fine, but just put the CarPlay in like every other manufacture. I continue to use my phone for map services when I commute. We started the business with s10’s and while not the nicest those trucks drove and drove, was looking forward to upgrading to the Colorado but how could you deny the simplicity and excitingness of these new Tacoma’s. What a fun truck.

Bought the 2018 zr2 with diesel engine. Its a tough truck, and nimble enough to park in town. The options and infotainment are all super sweet. Taken her up the mountain a few times in snow and slush and some flooded paved roads. My favorite thing is that the front tires sling the mud and water all over the truck when 4x4 ing. Way more fun than my silverado 1500

I did the same thing. I had a fully loaded 2019 taco TRD off road. Didn't like the seating position (very uncomfortable), suspension beats you up ( i drive for long periods), gas mileage is crap (20mpg on the highway), transmission hunts gears when going up hills or when you have a load, the rear end is noisy, everyone i called with Bluetooth complain about they could barely hear me. I was glad when I sold it. Now with my ZR2 diesel it's way more comfortable( my back it's not sore when driving), the gas mileage is way better (7 mpg better in the highway), it's smooth on the road, more room in the rear for my kids.

I bought a new Tacoma TRD 4dr 4wd fully loaded in ‘05. If I hadn’t hit a deer in ‘13 with 186k... it would still be my daily driver. Only thing aside from reg maintenance I had to do was timing belt, under-drive pulley and with Toyota’s proven reliability and desirable for off-road minded people is a no brainer. I would never buy a new model much less a GM. Compare the 2 with the available aftermarket parts available and it’s obvious who is on there a game. I also had and still do an 2007 FJ Cruiser TRD which uses the same drivetrain. Yes it is heavier and gets 15 -21 mpg with 110k on it, aside from timing belt and regular maintenance the motor is stock. That’s also on 33” M/T’s, All-Pro Uniball UCA’s, 3” lift and Fox coilovers with triple bypass shocks.

Great video, I love the comparison between the two. I drove a 1995 s10 ZR2 for 12 years with the 4.3l engine. I received 16-19 mpg with 32" off road tires on and had more torque than the 3.6l (if using current 4.3). I don't know why they don't use it in this truck, it seems it would get very similar mpg figures but have more torque. The weak points of my '95 ZR2 were: 1) Front end had to be changed every 50, 000 km (tie rods, ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm) 2) There were so many bangs and rattles in the interior that drove me nuts. 3) Was a little heavy and could of used more power I hope they have fixed these short comings and if so I would love to get back into the mid-size market due to their mobility in the city and trail.

My 07 taco with 236K miles is still running strong AF and has original everything. It’s a beast in the mud and does more than I expect it to. I’ll be a toyota customer for life. My mom had a 97 rav4 with over 200K miles, also with 0 mechanical issues before she sold it. I’m sure it’s still out there doing it’s thing. On a side note, my dad drives an 01 GMC Sierra, single cab short bed, V6 vortex 4x4 and that thing has a rough 380K miles on it. He did replace the transmission once because he uses it to haul heavy loads often. That truck is also a beast in the mud and is still running strong. My point is, Chevy/gmc and toyota both make great trucks and you really can’t go wrong with either, just make sure they’re 4x4 and they’ll hold their value. When it’s all said and done, both companies make great trucks and you can’t go wrong with either. Just don’t go dodge or Ford.

Nice review guys. I bought a new Tacoma off-road 2 years ago (2018). I don't think I will be going for another one in 2022. I keep my daily drivers for ~4 years. Tacoma has 2 things going against it: 1) lots of electrical issues with my truck. I was unpleasantly surprised with lack of reliability on my Tacoma. Maybe I got a lemon, I don't now, but bad dealer experience did not help either. 2) that engine is a car engine in a truck body. It struggles a lot to move the truck around. I am not the only one who noticed that. I had a couple guys from work test drive Tacoma and pick Chevy just because of the engine. My transmission gets stuck in 4th gear on a regular basis. If I put it in cruise control it will constantly shift and be challenged even at smallest incline. Low to mid end torque is non-existent. The truck is very well built mechanically. But electrically it has issues as I mentioned. It seems to me that Toyota "feel a sleep behind the wheel" with respect to the Tacoma. I will be looking hard into Jeep, Chevy and Ford in couple of years.

Cool Rush shirt !I have the cement Taco Pro in Cement. I love the truck, and it stands out for sure. I still do not understand why Toyota does not include the following at this price point:- Power drivers seat- Key fob remote start(for those cold winter mornings)- Mud flaps Also, they really need to have the transmission shift points adjusted to where you feel the 278 horsepower. You don't feel it until you really get into it. I know its designed to save fuel, but when you are driving on a slight grade on the highway, it bogs down and then shifts violently into a higher gear. I have to use the transmission power switch on the highway. Other than that, I am totally pleased with the Taco Pro. Thanks for the great comparison.

I bought a 2017 TRD off-road not the pro basically the same truck just cheaper. It's my first Toyota ever and I absolutely love it. it tows my utility trailer and jet skis with no issue. there's plenty of power it just revs at higher RPM could it use little bit lower RPM grunt sure. I find a comfortable then again I'm not big guy by any means. and for what I use it for light trail riding for hunting and fishing and going on the beach for surf fishing it does it great. and the reliability and resale value is absolute tops the only other vehicle they can equal resale value is a Jeep Wrangler. I even test-drove the Colorado before purchasing the Tacoma. what turned me off was looks and the interior still looks like it's from 1990 and honestly the reliability is just not there. I watched my dad go through multiple headaches with his 2011 Silverado. just adding a little bit more tidbit of information if you're buying a midsize truck and towing horse trailers or getting close to Max towing capacity you should have bought a full size. midsize trucks are not made for that even the Colorado with a diesel.

"and the reliability and resale value is absolute tops the only other vehicle they can equal resale value is a Jeep Wrangler. I even test-drove the Colorado before purchasing the Tacoma. what turned me off was looks and the interior still looks like it's from 1990 and honestly the reliability is just not there." LOL did you even do any research before you bought your truck? The 3rd gen Tacoma has been rated as the "Least Reliable Midsize Truck" the last two years by Consumer Reports. Below the Chevy Colorado and below the GMC Canyon. It's been the subject of two major recalls, one for faulty crank position sensors that fail and either cause the truck to stall or leave the truck completely stranded on the side of the road. That recall didn't address the issue of engine hesitation either. The second absolutely massive recall was for rear axles that leak differential fluid. The leak is so bad in some cases, that the rear differential either burns up or locks up, causing a potentially deadly crash. These problematic axles are being supplied by a Hino plant in Thailand. The previous, problem-free axles were being made in the US. Gotta save money I guess? The axle recall didn't address the widespread issue of howling rear differentials that in some cases howl so loud, you can hear it over the radio at highway speeds. And then there's the ongoing issues with the 3rd gen's automatic transmission that Toyota hasn't issued a recall for, but has unsuccessfully attempt to address with software updates that you need to convince your dealer to perform. Some owners had improvements, other owners had the updates make shifting issues worse. You can go for the manual transmission, but that doesn't guarantee problem-free ownership. That transmission has had issues with the gear selector being stuck in a certain gear and is famous for throwout bearings going bad prematurely.

You can tell the Tacoma Rear End was built for Off Road. The lower shock mounts are nicely tucked away to keep them free of rock bashing. The ZR2 lower rear shock mounts hang like a inch or two below the rear, also placed in the middle. Bash those on a rock and you'll be towing it home...

Off the factory floor the ZR2 is the better and more capable truck. If you intend to keep it stock the ZR2 would by my choice. However if you like to mod, add aftermarket parts then the Tacoma is the better choice. There is so much more aftermarket support for the Tacoma and the community is huge. If that's the case my recommendation would just be to get a TRD Off Road and mod to your hearts content. You won't feel so guilty about cutting up your bumper or throwing away the stock suspension. Plus money saved could go towards a nice set of Kings :D

I guess you missed that part at 6:05 where the Tacoma was dragging across rocks. The difference in ground clearance is less than half an inch. Not to mention Toyota continues to ignore Tacoma fans complaints over that low hanging aluminum transfer case -- the one that hangs over 2" below the bottom of the frame, protected by a thin piece of sheetmetal. It hangs so low in fact, that there are several aftermarket manufacturers of armor to protect it. Guys break the plastic actuator off the back of the T-case all the time, not an inexpensive fix. But go on, tell us about that massive 1/2" ground clearance advantage your rusty Tacoma has.

Great video....I like the comparison between these two. Personally, if I were in the market, it would be the Taco. Just swap the street biased tires. That being said, the Colorado has a lot going for it as well, especially the front locking diff. I think Chevy should make the Colorado more visually appealing. The Taco, especially in gray (cement) and tan (quicksand) just look the part and stands out in the crowd. The Colorado just too plain for me. Maybe Nissan can finally update the Frontier. Let's not forget a new Ranger is coming....oh a Ranger Raptor as well. Mid-sized truck market is about to get interesting.

The disappointing part is that Toyota used to sell their TRD Pro trucks with excellent BFG KO2's. The price for the 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro was increased by $3-4k vs the previous Tacoma TRD Pro, but the choice of tires is cheap and doesn't make sense on a truck that's supposed to be the ultimate off-road version of the Tacoma.

I'm just going to say right now, I have the 2017 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. It NEVER gets 18 in the city, whether I drive like a grandma or drive normally. On the freeway, I'm lucky to hit 21, even if I stay at 60 on cruise. Majority of the time, it gets 20 and the only time it hits 21 is if there are lots of hills to coast down and exploit the mileage. Having driven a Hybrid before I got my Tacoma, I feel I am fairly versed in how to take advantage of the terrain to get good mileage. Toyota needs to stop inflating their numbers, plain and simple.

Oh is that why the 3rd gen Tacoma has been named the least reliable midsized truck by Consumer Reports the last two years? Or had two major recalls for engines that leave customers stranded or even causing the engine to stall, and rear differentials that leak oil, howl so loud you can hear it over the stereo, and can potentially fail and lock up. And who can forget that legendary Toyota rust rot, responsible for countless Tacomas that rot so bad they fold in half. Rot that landed Toyota in a major legal battle last year and cost them several billion dollars. That very same rust rotting frame underpins the 3rd gen Tacoma BTW.

Both are cool but sorry if I'm buying a mid size, the Yota gets my pay check all day! Toyota = Resale and reliability! IMOP Chevy as of late( the last 30 years) products are just garbage ! LS motors are the only exception.

Test drove all the midsize trucks with an open mind and walked away with a 2021 Tacoma TRD off rd DCSB 4x4 automatic, with tech & premium pkg Tacoma is just far superior in quality compared to the rest , from what I experienced, and I’m all about quality, this 21’ Tacoma will be my last truck I purchase I LOVE it ....
