The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is something its predecessor was not: an extremely well-rounded and capable off-road mid-size truck that performs at a high level and wants for little. That it costs just $3200 more than last year's model is frankly remarkable. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is no longer a match, and the 2024 Tacoma is going to have to make a giant step of its own to keep up. What about Ford's upcoming Ranger and Ranger Raptor? Time will tell, but there's an even more capable Chevyt ZR2 Bison waiting in the wings.

I had an 2003 ZR2. I loved the truck, other than it was underpowered and thirsty. The 4.3 made around 190hp and I only got around 16 mpg with it, my 2003 6.0 powered work van gets 13 mpg full of tools, and would run away from that ZR2. I always felt that the 4.8 v8 would have been perfect in that truck. This new ZR2 is everything that wasn't and more. I'm still waiting on the new Ranger and Tacoma before I make a decision, but the new ZR2 is pretty sweet. I haven't always been a fan of gas turbo engines for durability, but it's what we have now. My wife has a Mercedes GLC300 with a turbo 4 cylinder. I think it's rated at 250 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque, but it makes full torque at 1300 rpms. The car jumps and has plenty of power all the way to triple digits and is fun to drive. I would imagine that 310 hp and 430 ft lbs will make the ZR2 feel like it has a 6.0 v8, perfect.

The Multimatic DSSVs on the ZR2s are a very high end shock. They quite literally cost 10-15x more for a set than a set of Ranchos do. Ranchos, etc. are still what you're going to see on budget off-road trims like Trail Boss.

When editing the video, you jumped around quite a bit in the beginning. It would have been nice to get to the comparison quicker. Also you start to discuss the front end of the truck and how it's been updated and changed. And then the next scene you start to discuss suspension. It would have been nice if you'd started and completed the whole front end section with skid plates and underneath and then move your way back to the suspension. Great video either way! Big fan!

Great video shots! As a prior owner of a 2017 ZR2 diesel the new truck appears to be vastly improved. I sold my ZR2 in 2019 to get into a Tacoma TRD Pro. I regretted the move, it was a step backwards. I love the muscular styling, 33” tires, standard tow hitch, new shocks, cast iron lower control arms, new interior, wider stance, etc. I’m going to wait on placing my 2023 ZR2 order until I read a review of the upcoming 2024 Toyota TRD Pro hybrid. My only negative regarding the new ZR2 is the dismal fuel mileage from the 4-cylinder 2.7 turbo engine.

What does one expect mpg to be on a ZR2 truck, lol. With 33in rubber, lifted & MT tread you will sacrifice mpg for this capability.
@PeakDecline
@PeakDecline Жыл бұрын
The Tacoma's hybrid is likely going to be like the Tundras... about power and not fuel economy. So I actually think the new Tacoma could put out more HP/Torque but I doubt the fuel economy is all that different. Maybe 1-2MPG better. The real question about the new Tacoma is if Toyota will give it a front locker, proper tires, and do any kind of high clearance bumpers. The prior TRD Pros, and the Tundra TRD Pro, simply don't round out the package completely. They put really good shocks and then do nothing else. I hope that changes but I doubt it.

I have a 2019 ZR2. It's my daily driver and 'light duty' wheeler. I have an older Jeep Cherokee I use on trails where 'some body damage may occur'. So while I can appreciate the offroad upgrades to the zr2 I am happy to keep my 2019. The bigger tires would be 'nice' but much of the upgrades are geared towards 'high speed baja' type wheeling. There isn't a lot of that available around here and it's not my 'thing'. I suspect most Zr2's won't see Baja racing type trails. The new 'trail boss' looks like a better choice for me, I would miss the selectable front/rear lockers but the automatic rear locker would be just fine for the trails I do with this truck.

Great review. Very interesting truck. Currently driving a 2022 Ram Bighorn 1500 (company vehicle) with the 3.6L. Debating on whether I want to buy it or get one of these. Retirement is approaching and I don't own a vehicle. Couple of interesting comparisons. The Ram is only about 200 lbs heavier based on curb weight and if the MPG coming out of the Colorado is correct the RAM wins in that category as well for similar HP (although the Colorado crushes it in torque).This definitely has better off road capability, but the RAM rides so sweet! 0:40 - 1:15 mark. How tall are you brother? Is it me or does this truck seem rather small when you are standing next to it? Don't get me wrong. It's nice to have a decently sized truck for a change. Especially in todays automotive world when _everything_ seems to be growing exponentially in size. I remember when the BMW 3-Series was a standard sized sedan. Whereas now, the current BMW 3/4-Series is the size of an old 5 or 6-Series. Not to mention, we have VW Jetta's the size of [the former] Passat's, F-150's teetering on the commercial trucking side of the spectrum, Mini Coopers that ceased being _mini_ a long time ago and so forth. Honestly, I am surprised you don't need a CDL to own and operate some of the current trucks available on the market. Although, it it's ironic when you think of this conundrum using cell phones as the product. Initially they started out the size of a briefcase (my Father worked for the phone company and was one of the first group of individuals in the US helping to develop the cellular phone). Then the goal was to shrink your cell phone down to the smallest possible size. Whereas now, you have phones the size of tablets! It's absurd to say the least. Stay classy my friends.

Waiting on the new Ranger and Tacoma before giving a verdict. It looks like the Ranger will have a much better engine (3.0 V6 400HP on the raptor) and even better suspension tech but probably for a higher price. The Tacoma will have the TRD Pro and Trailhunter versions but the last teaser is showing 31/32in wheels so Toyota will yet again lag behind in features off road capability from the factory. It will probably be as always a great option if you want to build it yourself though due to aftermarket support, and a great look. Then there is the Bison with the world's first 35s on a midsize (looks like Ford might want to respond with a performance or sasquatch package on the Raptor). My initial predictions is the following: Best for buying a low trim and building it out: Tacoma Best for performance: Ranger Raptor Best buy with good combination of off road performance from the factory at a decent price: Colorado ZR2. As for the Bison, considering that the useless joke of the Desert Boss package costs $10K for cosmetic shit, I am not holding my breath on the Bison pricing. It might cost 15K over the ZR2 just to move to slightly more lift, 35s and steel all around. Might as well buy the Raptor at that price (which fits 35s its been proven by the aussies) and have a much better engine for the same price or less and definitely at least the same off road capability. Not to mention I am pretty sure a lift will come for the ZR2 and allow 35s (albeit gearing will be an issue).
@PeakDecline
@PeakDecline Жыл бұрын
Fitting 35s isn't the same as a proper setup for 35s. Unless you regear then you've immediately nerfed any power advantage the Raptor might have over a ZR2 Bison. And in order to regear you're going to spend $2-$3K and completely blow out your warranty on probably the single most important thing on a truck besides the engine/transmission... the axles. I'm hoping Ford gives the Raptor 35s from factory when the Ranger arrives stateside. But the Aussie trucks are completely tuned around 33s. Hence they get smaller diameter shocks, weaker steering racks, etc. versus a Bronco Raptor.

Still near 100% if not more than that to justify the expense, absolutely. Does anyone actually drive their vehicle in the manner shown in this video? Obviously not. Making a far more robust short bed with larger tires and *HUGE* sidewalls has advantages in certain towing and trailering applications but as a stand alone work truck yes you are absolutely correct this is *NOT* the way to go for a work truck or daily driver plus Lowes Home Depot and back work. For combining fuel mileage with practicality the only truck I have ever seen attempt this is the Ford F150 Hybrid which obviously isn't going to be getting eye candy such as this so I guess no one is going to offer that as who wants an actually practical pickup truck, c'mon mister! Least of all from General Motors!

ZR2 should get worse mileage than the Z71 and same as the Trail boss (i think). This comes down to having a lift and the front air dam missing (on ZR2). Full size are surprisingly close to these, though I think the Z71 Colorado will probably get a bit more mileage than a Silverado. Colorado 5ft bed only and all Canyons are lifted with the HO engine…Colorado Z71 and Trail Boss can be flashed to the HO engine after purchase, if one wishes.

So funny to me people comparing this to the Raptor R. Both pointed for two different people. The RR is supposed to be quick. But the ZR2 is more off-roady. However they have about the same torque which really matters. If you want a fast truck get a TRX or a faster car. Don’t look for a fast midsize. The Chevy wins imo with the same amount or torque and much much more comfort features. Chevy ftw.

Raptor R? Do you mean Ranger Raptor? What comfort features does the Chevy have that the Ford may not?
@rts3613

The Raptor R is faster than the TRX, and has 700 hp and 640 ft lbs of torque, the comparison will be the new Ranger Raptor when it hits our shores. I'm not sure that I agree that a ZR2 is more off road ready than a Raptor R, on the roads in this video, a Raptor R would run away from the ZR2. A Colorado ZR2 would have the advantage on tight slow trails because of it's smaller size, the Raptor and TRX are huge.

@@ethenjordan2010 I never said anything about racing on the street, I said the Raptor R would walk away from the ZR2 on the roads in the video. But, people race anything they can, cars, trucks, boats, mopeds... People race what they have, it's about bragging rights. I've watched several drag races between the Raptor R and TRX. Most I've seen the Raptor R won, but some the TRX won and some were neck and neck. This is the one that stuck in my mind, because the Raptor R gapped the TRX when the TFL Trucks guys raced them kzbin.info/www/bejne/laqulKGbgJdpa7M. So, it's not proven.

If you’re buying a truck to go fast. You’re not going to get a fast one in a midsize. Get a fast hatch or something them. Torque numbers are the same which is really what matters. Not HP. The Chevy also has a much better interior.

What amazes me is how the only people who have these trucks. Are the people reviewing them. You try and order one of these and no dice. They basically are trying to do what jeep did. Roll out the top of the line then they don’t produce it. The reason for this, it’s to justify their sticker shock . Create a base of supporters then screw them until the following vehicle year and charge even more! Jeep did this with their Cherokee top of the line.

I tried to buy a 2023 Colorado or Canyon over the last week... There are 0 available within a 1000 mile radius... All are "in transit" with no eta available... I heard a rumor it's due to the massive mistake w the oil pans that they are fixing but... If you go to build your own on Chevy and then instead search local inventory you will see ... NOTHING available..
@tyh6243
@tyh6243 Жыл бұрын
Not the oil pan. The delay was in getting approval from EPA and finalizing their MPG numbers. Lots of finished trucks sitting in, well, lots. Shipments have started now that EPA numbers are finalized but it'll take time to coordinate the glut of stuck trucks.

@@tyh6243 good to know... That said there was a reputable KZbin automotive technician that showed a video highlighting a msg from Chevy to dealers not to sell to customers until they performed a procedure to fix a serious problem related to either the oil pan or something thereof... And the issue was caused during assembly due to a tool that was either out of calibration or malfunctioning... Anyways the video showed the official communication and it read very serious... Now for the life of me I can't find that video... The EPA thing seems reasonable but Chevy is not communicating w buyers and dealers are pretending to have them online when they don't... Many aren't showing "in transit" and many that are are in fine print and many not showing at all... I applied for pre approval and was approved (hard pull) all to come to find "it's in transit" w no eta... Same story everywhere... Now that hard credit pull was for nothing... Anyways I went ahead and bought a new Ranger Lariat...simply because there is absolutely no info coming out regarding timeline.

I was surprised by that, too. 35 psi and above. The team of journalists appeared to have blown out a number of tires during the trek and I believe high pressure contributed to the problem. They had the Colorado race team there for guidance so that's even more surprising. I get that they need higher PSI for the speeds they were running but even mid 20s could have helped smooth out the ride, increase tire hookup, and reduce rock cuts.

I’ve always been impressed with the way Chevy approached the ZR2. I too have a gripe with Toyota on why not a front locker. After reading a lot of these comments I realize that the ZR2/checy customers really are catered to in the sense that they really take performance of these trucks in stock form seriously. It is very interesting in the wheeling community. Toyota people are forced by Toyota to build their vehicles whereas Chevy people are mostly satisfied with their purchase. You also see this out on the trail. If and when I see a ZR2, it’s stock. I have friend that has a Colorado @scurdge2001 (and so do I)and he complains about Toyotas because they don’t have a front locker. But the Toyota guys ends up building their trucks way beyond the ZR2s capabilities. But the ZR2 crowd will buy the truck with the front locker….. but hardly use it. It’s fun to think about their customer base when you sit and analyze it. Anyways !!! Amazing video on of a wonderful product. 🔥🔥🔥 you certainly looked to be have a time of your life making this review. 💟👏🏽

No. Our economy is so screwed up that it would cost more to have the "economy" truck that I want built or rebuilt than it would cost to compete with smol pp broke arses to buy a new luxury truck.
