i'm sure you've been told this before but it's a breath of fresh air seeing videos where one can actually think they can use their vehicle to explore these trails, because now the normal is to throw 37s and huge beefy suspension and go on trails. but you really dont get the feeling you can do them having a close to stock vehicle.

Thats our goal… thankfully many stock vehicles are built beefy enough to do a lot of trails. Still, we don’t snub our noses to a good build for those truly brutal trails, but for many, they already have what they need to see these views!

Well, people have different ideas about how capable they want their vehicles to be. I have a lifted Power Wagon on 37's which is needed due to the truck's long wheelbase. I've been off-roading for over 50 years now and my first 4X4 was a 1963 GMC Panel truck which wouldn't make a lot of these trails. The first 4X4 I put a lift on was a 1980 Toyota pickup truck with the 2.2 liter 4 banger. It went just about everywhere, even without lockers. My trucks have become more and more capable as the decades have slipped by and now I'm at the age when I don't want to have to do too much physical exertion, especially at higher altitudes to get my truck to where I want it to be. I let the truck do the work.

Did Imogene a few years ago in a rented Jeep (didn't want to drive or trailer my YJ 500 miles to do this). My anxiety of not having done this trail before, along with my arthritis flaring in my right shoulder, made this trail less enjoyable than I would have liked. The summit is very serene. Would like to do it again before I die. Nevertheless, when it comes to Imogene, take it slow and in low will make it a good experience. Thanks for the video!

We just did Imogene in August 2024. We have been running that trail for more than 20 years and it is interesting to see how it has changed. Same for Blackbear. We trailered out 22 year old Jeep out there from Michigan (Now dubbed "The Short Bus" by my friends kids. Big, Yellow short wheel base Jeep with dummies in it LOL!). Yeah, 1300 miles but it is worth it.

Those lower control arm bolts are notorious for backing out. I got lucky once and caught mine 4 threads showing during a pretrip. If you have a Toyota product, you should be checking them regularly. Also, put a touch of loctite on them if you ever take them out for mods/repairs.

I actually carry 2 of those and 2 caliper bolts now due to "incidents". They're cheap and worth their weight in gold if you need one.

10:35 - At the end of that water crossing, if you take a right, it’s a loop that takes you to a much larger waterfall that you ended up driving above on the main trail. Should check it out next time you’re up there. Love your videos, Dewie!

Did Imogene Pass from Ouray to Telluride back in the early 1980's with my dad. Was basically my first off-road trip and made with a stock 1984 Toyota SR-5 pickup. The shelf road on the cliff on the South side of Telluride was a bit terrifying (I was new to off roading).

I wanted to do almost exactly this, but I always liked enjoying the trail more than filming videos and editing. Made 2 short videos mostly for family and stopped. Had a real basic 06 Laredo on tiny ko2's no 4w-low just an all wheel drive lil guy. Able to do SO many of the trails in Colorado just fine. Building out a 2016 Cherokee trailhawk right now... Should be 10 times more capable and a blast.

You have to enjoy the filming aspect to do this in my opinion. I luckily have been wheeling for so long that filming these videos offers a new challenge that gets me even more excited. I usually prefer to film now as it also slows me down a little to soak the trail in better. I will tell you, I spend more on making these videos than they actually make in adsense so you’re not missing some mythical money maker tho.

I'm guessing the actual money comes less from Direct views and ad's and more when you have some merch and sponsorships(which I'm sure opens a whole world of ugly, as is Norma for money and corporations). Great video showing this fun but challenging trail. Extra points for stopping to help a fellow off roader. One correction is the structure that you ID'ed as Fort Peabody is not the fort. When you get to the top of Imogene the road splits. You turn right to go the pass and the left trail goes to a nice overlook area. Fort Peabody is up above that lookout. It is a wood structure a little bigger than the one on the pass and is surrounded by a rock wall. I recommend going up to this lookout for another great view.

I drive a mostly stock '05 Dodge Dakota 4x4 (I have 30" AT tires but that's basically it). Whenever I'm wheeling I turn my music off so I can hear nature...and whether I'm breaking my truck lol. I live in the Colorado Springs area and have mostly wheeled around the Front Range, would love to come on a drive with you guys sometime, I'm not fully sure of this truck's capabilities, as I haven't been on any notable trails, other than FS 379 near Mt. Rosa

Right on! Sounds like a great vehicle! So, my goal is to film the best trail videos I can which isn’t like a typical group led trip. Definitely check… I had an idea of taking a rental offroad (nothing crazy) and remember seeing that wouldn’t fly. I looked into Turo too. There are outfitter companies in Denver that will rent you a offroad-able overland kitted out vehicle (Jeeps, Broncos, Toyotas) that you can wheel all over. It’s a bit expensive tho. I’d maybe rent a SUV like grand cherokee to tour the state and then rent a Jeep in Ouray or Moab. If you got some time, definitely see Moab. Its an hour and a half from Grand Junction (lots of rental companies there).

Hey so I know at times they did the optional off-road features. I'm wondering about a long wheelbase vehicle. I've got a Chevy Colorado crew cab long bed and might have my bike rack on the back as well. I'm wondering if it would slam the bike rack guaranteed a variety of times

Colorados are midsize trucks so I would think it would be fine. We had a ranger do Black Bear Pass without issue and that’s a more challenging route. Since you have a longer wheelbase, I’d say your bike is at increased risk. If you do it, let us know how it goes.

Do yall normally air down & disconnect sway bars when doing these trails?? I’m headed to this area for the first time in late July & want to run Imogene & maybe Poughkeepsie/Engineer. Really dig your channel!!

Most people in the videos are aired down. I air down for mud, sand, snow, wet rocks, and extended duration trips. I do disconnect on obstacles. Sometimes for fun I’ll stay connected to try to three wheel. If you have the ability, disconnecting the sway bar is recommended when offroad. Any JL will have no problem in the san juans with a skilled driver. Thank you!

All I can say, is the hummer H3 is a very capable vehicle that I feel I could get up or down every trail in the San Juans. However, it’s your vehicle and you will have to make that call.

The video doesn't prepare you for "exposure". Leaning towards what looks like an infinite drop and then having a step that leens you even more is unnerving. My old FJ60 was gasping for air and my palms were sweaty, but well worth it even for the scenery. Good video with great advice. I aired down to 20 and didn't spin a tire, on a stock manual everything Land Cruiser.

Filmed last year. We both work full time jobs and edit videos as we can. A video shouldn’t provide a conditions assessment as that can change overnight. For instance, we filmed a rock slide on Mount Baldy, uploaded it pretty quickly, and within a few days of publishing, the rock slide was cleared. These are made for people wanting to see if a trail is worth doing as well as those that will not have the opportunity to see the trails themselves.

Uphill traffic has the right of way, BUT off-roaders usually will work together to figure out who can get in the clear the easiest.

From the Ouray side, it's very easy. What's intimidating is when you get to the top and see the shelf-road down into Ophir. First time, I turned around and went back to Ouray, no problem. Worth it to see views from top.

It would. Ophir Pass was the second real trail I did. I did that then did Imogene right after in the same day. I also tried to go to Yankee Boy Basin, but turned around halfway up due to losing daylight. I did Broken Arrow in Sedona the day before. I bought an FJ Cruiser and went on a road trip two months later. It was my first offroad vehicle. If you're a confident driver, you can do it.

drive to pass from east is easy. no 4wd. plain gravel. drive from west can be rocky but nothing extreme at all. and yes, drive down/up west side of pass can be intimidating. just don't look down. :)

We are a fan of Broncos and have filmed a lot of videos with them (to be edited). I arrange filming trips through the channel membership because a filming session is different than a typical group run. I have info there that gets everyone on the same page.

Some of it is shot on an iPhone but in auto mode, not pro res. Drew is the best color corrector this channel has… I’m pretty sure the look of this was intentional. I thought it looked great and realistic.

@snivesz32 Color correction was done to try and even out the footage from the 3-4 different cameras. Most of it was very blown out exposure wise and green so a lot got corrected closer to the middle, mostly the GoPro footage. However, recently I have been dealing with constant crashing on the color page in Davinci resolve so that greatly affected my color process having to restart the program multiple times every hour. I was satisfied with the results without spending a few more days on just the color grading. Eventually I'll sort out some good Luts for different scenarios, but with the changing of environments and the angle of the sun though out the day each shot seems to need its own specific adjustments past just a general LUT. Appriciate your input and hopefully adds some context to our process in the making of this one.

TrailsOffroad for half that. Funtreks books for $25 are a great buy tho. I have the funtreks app, OnX, & TrailsOffroad. It’s a shame that onx used all of funtreks data as their own so when OnX first came out, they looked great. However it was all funtreks data without any credit given. I think that was shady even if OnX paid for that data.

..Nice look at the pass .... New off roaders need to take a look at maps and info before driving any designated 4x4 pass ,, as some are one way only ..... and passes with tunnels carved in are usually signed as height issues ,, meaning NO overhead campers .. Would not be much fun to back down a pass like this ... Stock vehicles that are commented as "can do" doesn't mean should do .... Anyone getting into even designed trail off roading should have vehicle with reasonable ground clearance and a winch with basic recovery gear ,, i.e. straps,, chains ,, a few receiver connectors ,, a couple shackles ,, 1-2 snatch blocks for winch cable ,, shovel and extra pair of underwear ... .. And HEY ,, if you feel better doing a 3-point turn DO IT,, even a 47- point turn ,, just stay on the mountain !! ....

Fair enough! Music is definitely the hardest thing for me as an editor, and I’m sure it’s not easy for Drew either. We always want the vehicle sounds to come through mostly, but if we leave music out, the video feels empty and doesn’t do as well. I’m actually stuck on the music phase in my next edit right now. If i can figure it out, the rest should be quick to cut as I think mine will be a shorter vid.

@@coloradomallcrawlers I'm dyslexic also, have to spend A LOT of time correcting my text when I post comments -- but I do it or else they'd be almost impossible (and highly annoying) to wade through even if understandable. So how am I supposed to knwo you're dyslexic? Even so, I've never heard of anyone dyslexic being speech-impaired where they mispronounced words. But you know, in all fairness a lot of "normal people" "mispronounce Imogene as well -- not just you. Mainly Americans, such as ""EYE-ran" for Iran or "EYE-raq" for Iraq. They seem to want to say a long-vowel sound, not a short vowel. But in most languages, a long vowel sound isn't very common, jut in English (I guess). So it's not surprising they (the average person) can't even pronounce the name of the pass they're doing a video on but it's still (yes) "bothersome." And kind of hurts their credibility. Now you know though... But really, "Imogene" is a female (girl's) name and the pass is pronounced the same way, so everyone should know that. "Jeep Wave" (I have one, too) -- BR

There’s different versions of dyslexia. I was diagnosed in college when my spanish professor caught it. I could read and write spanish, but not speak it or understand spoken spanish. It should have been caught in elementary school as I was in speech therapy till I was 7-8 years old, but I otherwise excelled in all my classes. In medical school, I was tested and again, I was confirmed to be dyslexic. I learn by reading, but phonetics don’t work for me. Hearing how something is pronounced does not mean I will be able recreate it. I looked up the pronunciation online before filming this and what you heard here was my attempt to recreate it. You’ll notice in the Poughkeepsie edit, I never said the name. I edited out all my attempts out cause it just never came out right. Anyway I would hope a viewer would put more weight on my decades long experience as an offroader and the information packed into these videos. However if my pronunciation hurts my credibility, so be it as I can’t change it. Luckily I can pronounce most trail names (including the often mispronounced Ophir), but I will continue to have difficulty with female names that are no longer used like Imogene.

Did this from the Telluride side last year with @nazgul_renegade. When we got to the summit we had a rain cloud roll into us and we did the Ouray side in the rain/clouds back down.
