To establish a garden in rocky soil, you need to build the dirt first. Start a compost pile - a five or six foot round container built with fencing wire. Fill it up with grass clippings, shedded leaves, coffee grounds from you local coffee shop, food scraps, etc. next spring turn it over a couple of times during the summer. That fall, you will have good dirt. While this is percolating, build a loop house. In your vase, it will need to be tall enough and wide enough to hold about 4 to 6 beds. Thinking 2 x6 construction.
@ColoradoMountainLiving4 жыл бұрын
I might be able to get this started before winter, had it on the "to do" list. I'm wondering how a hoop house might hold up in severe winds. should ask around here...

Colorado native here. Hey I saw your deck and wanted to give you an idea. We spent 16 years in Grand county and have shoveled our share of decks. With the codes on railings now it is hard to shovel large amounts of snow under the bottom rail. We recently built a large deck using the heavy wire mesh like yours. We hinged several sections at the top so they could swing out and be propped open thus allowing a wide open space to push the snow off the deck. A real time and back saver.
@ColoradoMountainLiving4 жыл бұрын
Very cool! Thanks for sharing that idea. We are not done with our deck construction yet and this is a very interesting solution to snow!

What about moving the bee hive ( attach wheels to base ) and veg Garden ( attach wheels to base ) inside a Shipping Container , with interior and exterior insulation with exterior cladding for the winter
@ColoradoMountainLiving4 жыл бұрын
I would like to build a wind break for the bees eventually, but do not want to create an artificially warm environment, or they will not be hibernating during the winter. 'They will try to fly and discover no where to go and no food which would be a huge stress.

Amy, i have 2 shih tzu poodles, and when the snow gets deep outside in the yard, i use the snowblower to clean half the yard for them to use, and the first thing they do, is jump and disappear in the deep snow. they love it . is there any word that the snow helped with the fires. i have friends in Oregon that had to evacuate

Wow definitely you guys are at a high altitude, great mukluks you got there, definitely great weather for a bonfire for everybody to gather around maybe with a hot chocolate, how is the Vermont castings stove holding up for you and does it put out alot of heat, my family would mix some espresso coffee and sugar with the freshly fallen snow as an icy treat, continued success Sincerely Fabrizio
@ColoradoMountainLiving4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No chance of a bonfire with statewide fire ban. Even with the snow, the existing wildfires are not gone. The stove is amazing! it does put out great heat and with our foam insulation, it holds it quite well.
