Coloring Page BACKGROUND IDEAS & Masking Tricks

Coloring page backgrounds can sometimes be the hardest part of a coloring page - so I’m testing out some different masking methods and mixed mediums to see if we can come up with some new background ideas that are easy and look good!
For the masking methods, I’m trying out masking pens, masking tape and masking film.
And for the coloring mediums, I’m trying out PanPastels, soft pastels, a watercolor “hack” with normal markers, and the Ranger Distress Oxides from ‪@timholtz‬
These different mediums would all usually be too impractical or messy in a coloring book, so masking opens up a huge range of creative possibilities… IF it works! Let’s find out together.

Even on watercolour paper, it's still a good idea to test your masking fluid and masking tape. Many a time I've ended up frustrated because my paper has torn despite being 140lb watercolour paper. I've also come to discover that the thicker the better with masking fluid. I had been applying thin layers and getting frustrated when it didn't peel off. Then I tried applying the fluid in the ticker layer and it came off like a dream

Sarah: when using the pan pastel tools the sponge tip applicators can be wiped off on a paper towel then can use for the next color. No mix of colors on the applicators or pans.

the magic of the distress oxides is in the oxidation when you add water! maybe wouldn't do it for a background page like this but try using a spray bottle and gently spraying some water onto the smooth blended ink and watch what happens...

For more translucent look, try the Distress Inks instead of the Distress Oxides. Both are beautiful, just slightly different looks.

Hi. I use the Molotow Masking Marker (blue liquid) and it is great on watercolor paper. I have never tried it on anything with less weight than 140 lb paper. It is very strong and will hold up to a lot a water and multiple layers. I don't think it is made for use on paper of less weight however. As for the W&N Masking Fluid with Yellow Tint, it is great, but again, it is really meant for use on watercolor paper. There are also special made "erasers" for masking fluid, they are normally called Rubber Cement Pick-ups or Glue Residue Erasers. These will peel the masking fluid away without tearing the paper. You just rub it over the masking fluid after it is dried and it sticks to the eraser and peels up. I have used the pastels with the masking fluid on watercolor paper to help with the backgrounds. Great way to mix mediums and get an awesome look to your artwork. Hope this helps!

From my further research, watercolor paper seems to be the key. So fantastic for watercolor projects but not really suitable for coloring books. Thanks for sharing your own experience!

You are doing the Distress Oxides correctly - they blend well but it takes a little practice. Watch Tim Holtz, Kristine Werner, and Amy Rysavy.

I recommend pulling off masking tape diagonally (so at a 45 degree angle) so it will not rip up the paper. Additionally if your masking tape's adhesive is too strong, stick it on your pants first, then pull it off and apply to the paper.

I'm super late but my masking tape hack that many watercolorists use is to heat up the masking tape with a blow dryer. It softens the adhesive.

Sarah, you need to watch the master-Tim Holtz. He invented this stuff and he has lots of techniques on how to use them. He doesn’t do coloring pages but what he does do is pretty fabulous. There is also distress ink which is different than the oxides, as the latter works different with water.

I know this is an old video but this is interesting. I've never seen pan pastels before and I really do like using soft pastels in my colouring books for backgrounds. I would really like to try pan pastel I reckon they would be so much easier to use.

Unlike distress inks, pastels & Panpastels are ***ERASABLE***. You can lay down the pastels for your BG first & not worry if you go into your image. You can then ERASE any marks you don't want w your fave eraser. Then color the main image. Pastels are very forgiving, & as a dry medium, won't bleed thru pages. They're just a bit messy. Sarah didn't really need to use the masking tape on the last picture bc she could have easily erased any mistakes since she hadn't colored the rest of the image yet.

It was a terribly cheap brush, and my technique needs improvement! I’ve just bought a set of watercolor brushes on a sale so I can work on this for next time 😝

@@SarahRenaeClark I hope I describe this well enough to make sense, but I would recommend holding the brush at an almost 90-degree angle and roll the bristles over the paint, paper etc. This way the bristles don't end up bending one way or the other

Sarah I had to come back and add I’m a heavy-handed ink blender even though I’ve been doing it for at least about 4-6 months. You do what works for you. Also, there are so many card makers and stamp companies on KZbin with helpful tutorials on ink blending, but I recommend Lavinia Stamps here on KZbin. They are a UK based company and they produce ethereal silhouette stamps, and fairy-themed stamps, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they have wonderful ink blending videos. Their videos show how to produce beautiful artistic pictures and card panels. They show many techniques on how to get the most out of your TH Distress Oxide Inks and other brands of ink pads. I don’t pretend to make cards to justify the expense of it all, I just like making small card-sized artworks using my distress oxide inks, stamps, embossing powder, and alcohol markers (if I decide to do any colouring). If need to make a card I use one of my pre-made panels or I make a new one and glue it to a card base. Anyway, now you’ve bought your first set of TH distress oxide inks, unfortunately you’ll find you won’t stop!! Have fun.

I've done that marker and sheet thing. You need to really layer the marker on and use a spray bottle (just a normal little one) to apply the water so it goes evenly. It's really a fun technique when you figure out how it works.

Delicate surface painter's tape is washi tape, just a really big roll of it. It's also a bit see-through so easy to cut if you choose to cut the lines. I personally like Frog Tape brand. To reduce tack of other tapes, pick up lint off your clothes first before applying to the paper. A hair dryer will also soften up adhesive if removal is being stubborn (hair dryer is much gentler than a heat gun).

Don't give up on the idea of masking liquid. I think it is the 'rough' tip of the pens that cause it to stick to the paper. Try using the yellow W&N one with a sacrificial brush (cause it doesn't wash out) and see if you get better results peeling it off. Also, I find that Pebeo Drawing Gum (the bottle, not the pen) works the best for me.

From what I’ve seen from watching other videos since mine, using cold press watercolor paper (rough texture) also seems to be the best for these. I’ll definitely keep experimenting- just want to be cautious in recommending them until I can confidently make them work! I know they are fantastic for watercolor

Kristina Werner uses a masking liquid. Usually on water color paper. She applies it with a paint brush and then lets it dry. After her artwork dries, she rubs it off.

Have heard that if you rub soap in the bristles before using it, that helps her the masking liquid out afterwards.

This is accidentally one of my favorite videos of yours, I totally get overwhelmed by empty backgrounds, especially in books where the artist actually leaves most of the page blank for ME to fill in…but Ive been desperate to try the distressed oxides, Im no card marker but I love the way they look on paper….but to finally see someone who had never used it before, not sure of the techniques to use, just do it and loving it so much….im totally heading to Michael’s and WILL NOT be afraid of picking the wrong things or the wrong colors…I’ll just GO FOR IT!!

Backgrounds are my nemesis on colouring pages. Thanks for the video. EDIT I never knew masking pens and liquid existed. This is revolutionary to me! I just checked Amazon and it looks like a glue eraser (I have one due to card making) might be the way to remove the masking product.

You don’t need to load the ink blender with as much ink. A short dab on the ink pad will pick up ink and you can build it up the colour with another pass if needed. A little goes a long way

I've used Frisket for a lot of airbrush art. I found that if you remove some of the stickiness before applying to your art it comes off nice and easy. I have ruined art in the past with it being too sticky.

Sarah, I use masking fluid a lot when I am working on calligraphy projects. OK, it isn't easy to clean the brush afterwards, hence you use an old or cheap brush to apply it, but it is very easy to peel off. Those marker pens you used made me shudder - having to use a blade to lift it off the paper - no way!

i love my cheap art board (light board) because i draw my own coloring pages and can just trace them over and over or just the bits i need to remember while i free hand paint the rest :D ya, regular pastels are a mess. never used pan pastel but i always thought it looked a bit like putting on makeup. that about right? i will probably look for that masking film as i have basically been using the same idea but with strips of masking tape.

I hope you maybe had chance to watch the master Tim Holtz use his inks. The "Ink Smoothing" technique you used with the tombow pens works brilliantly with the distress and distress oxide inks as well. As you said paper is everything and spritzing the paper prior to placing the acetate and you get better results. The stamping market has a great range of masking products.

Very good video. Now I don't feel so discouraged from screwing up using alcohol markers for the first time. I thought they would be a good solution to doing a gradient background but I can't get a smooth clean blend. I'll keep trying though.

Alcohol markers are hard for larger areas. I haven’t worked out the best approach yet either!

I did scrapbook a loooot few years ago, distress inks was one of my favourite medium. And I just couldn't watch You put SO MUCH ink on the blender :D It supposed to be just touch pad once, and then build the colour the result in solid colour would be exactly the same :D EDIT: Sorry, you were using Distress oxide - I didn't know that thing. I was using Distress ink (without oxide in the name)

ah. that's why they rule of studio hygeine says no eating and drinking in the studio. good thing you're not using Gamsol. if you plan on using watercolors in the future you should get Neptune watercolor brushes. they are nice and will serve you well. maybe a kolisnky sable size 12 round and a squirrel hair mop brush.

Tipp... The mascing fluids get trie over a few months then they you can throw them out of the window 😅 So use them as quickly as u can 👍

late to the partt but for the passerby who doesnt know yet: certain adhesives get ... softer/looser when heat is applied. i usually do this for my paintings, i blast it with a hair dryer for a bit and that loosens up the masking tape. WARNING the tape and paper do get HOT to the touch so a bit of caution is recommened. (a heat gun might also work and probably wont blow the paper everywhere, but i dont own one....)

try printing it out directly onto the paper. My computer can print on up to 80lb paper so you can save lots of time and effort plus most inks are waterproof.

When you did the Tombow background, you never put a enough pen on the acetate sheet and you needed to spritz it with water to make it wetter. Also how bent is your brush 😂. Don’t leave brushes standing in water long enough to bend the bristles 🥰

I havent tryit the prisma colored pencils or any pencils really but i bought masterart pencils and i search online for information about them and one rewiew said that they performanssi just like prisma colored pencils..and i think they'r cheaper too..you must try them.. it sais on the box that theyr extra soft, extra coverage,extra smooth,,brightnes,break-resistant and extra lead size..they have mostly or only good rewiews that i found..and no im kot paid To prais them or anything..i would love To hear what an experienced artist like you think of them..cause theyr cheap..and jeah..please try them..your trying all kinds of pencils..i think these should be tryit aswell...sorry for my writing..not sure how many mistakes i've made but i do try To get it right..it just harder than i thought..cause i can understand really well english and i think i can speak it well as well..writing tough is completly different thing..

i hate that molotow masking fluid pen. it tears the paper on all watercolour papers i've tried it with, and it feels really scratchy going down, gives me that skeevy, nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling. io was shuddering watching you trying to peel it with a dry medium, made me get that feeling again!!

I just bought the Molotow masking pen and it was delivered today. I'm so glad I watched this before I was just about to apply it to a painting I've spent over a week working on. I will definitely test it on some other paper first. Well, I got anxiety just watching you. I colour to DEstress, not stress. You've got all these different things and water and brushes and SCREAM! I just like to colour. Anyway, I thought that picture of the bottle was on the sand with little stones around it. The waves have just washed it ashore so the background would be brown. Art is in the eye of the beholder. Plus, if there is some water in the bottom of the bottle, then the paper has soaked through and is unreadable. I've never been one for pictures that need the background filled in. I just leave it alone and am happy with the picture. If it is obviously outdoors, I run some blue in the background and done. When I started adult colouring, there were no tutorials or comparisons so I am self taught. I love going to colouring pages on Facebook to look at the cool backgrounds others have done. I would never enter a contest, as colourists always win, colourers get "nice job." I'm fine with 'nice job.' It just annoys me that people keep pushing me to do better and I will learn as I try more things. No, I won't. And I'm happy with what I do. I do shade and blend a little until something looks like I saw it in my head. One lady did annoy me once when she commented, "You are good at filling in spaces," while I was slaving away over a picture. Humph.
