I believe that was the first video I of yours that I watched!! I worked for years as an artist, but stopped about 15 years ago and haven't really done anything in all that time. Something clicked in my head (heart?) recently and I've dove back into drawing/painting/etc. I'd never really done much with color pencils, which is how I ended up finding your video. "Sadly" now I am coming to understand why people have so many types and sets!! (I catch myself seeing a set in the store and wondering what they look/feel like and tell myself I do not 'need' more).

This was terrific for how the pencils I have perform on different papers. Thanks for doing such massive research. I am struggling with using colored pencil over the top of ink in my Neurographica drawings. colored pencil paper is THE WORST. Even the copic multiliner ink drags out into my beautiful pastel colors and turns them gray. In this drawing technique, being able to color over the inking lines is ESSENTIAL. I love the method, but the ink smear is the madness. HELP! lol

I've said this for years. I would gladly spend $40 on a coloring book that was printed on and intended for a specific medium or mixture. Marketed that way for example "Intended for marker base with pencil finish work" and labeled specifically such as Bristol Smooth with weight and all. Such a needed product in the coloring industry. Please Sarah, partner with Kerby and make this product! You're wonderful btw. Oh and ask him not to add so much shading.

Yes, when I find a “water coloring book” it has amazing paper and thickness. I wish all coloring pages were printed on that paper so no matter what medium you use it can take it

I can completely understand. I have sets of profesional pencils but it doesn't give them the full justice of what they can actually do if you do not use them on quality paper. The quality of paper is just as important as the quality of the pencils. Such a shame whem you get beautiful pictures in colouring books only to find that they are printed on standard printer paper. I'm really struggling to find a printer that is a multifunctional laser printer that will print on 300 gsm artist paper. If you have any ideas of what printers are capable I would really appreciate if you could let me know. What printer do you use. The exact Model and type.

@@Fallen5321 been checking a bit, Chatgpt mentioned Hp/Canon/Epson laser printer can take 300/220/256 gsm. However HP site mentioned only inkjet can take 300 while laser jet 200. (reference google HP Paper compatibility for HP inkjet and LaserJet printers)

@@Fallen5321I have a printer from Epson. It is especially produced for printing photos but I don’t print photos for a family album ;-) That also means this printer can print images in the most incredible colours and is very sharp with printing. I’ve tested the paper it could handle. This printer printed a coloringpage on 270gsm (strathmore 300-Bristol vellum). It worked well. I must say that I could hear the printer was going to it’s ‘max’. The 250gsm went very easy and smooth. The 270gsm took him a bit more power.

Great comparison! If they sell the canson xl papers in your country their xl pastel paper is identical to the Mi-Tintes. I only found it once here but it worked great.

The Canson website says the XL range are “not available in Australia”- but I did manage to get some other papers that were aimed at a U.S. audience so I’m sure there would be a way! I don’t think I need any new paper for a while here personally 😂 - but it’s a great note for anyone reading! I’m definitely excited to use the Mi-Teintes, the 500 Bristol and the Stonehenge for some actual drawing soon!

Canson is what we use mostly both for drawing and watercolors, and makers, paintmarkers and acrylic paint works great on most of the high quality stuff they do, it is expenciv though or at least the once we use are, its a pad of 20 A4 pages and its 50 euros, so with shipping to Australia its probely super expenciv. But great video, my local art store is very on top of the best quality stuff on the maked and go out of there way to stock everything they can of the top quality stuff, so they sell most of the high end paprr brands in you video pluss a buch more that possible to get here in europe

In my personal opinion and experience, paper is quite likely the most important consideration for use with colored pencil and to be honest, any medium. I endured so much frustration and really thought I was just terrible with colored pencils due to using the wrong paper or trying to color on standard printer paper or coloring book pages. I simply could not get the pencils to blend and layer as I thought they should. I know it might seem trivial and silly to a lot of people, but I ended up in tears a lot of times because I wasn't achieving what I wanted to do with colored pencil. I wish I had seen a video like this during that time and understood the importance of using the right paper. It would have saved me so much time and frustration. Everyone who is serious about colored pencil art needs to know these things. Paper quality matters more than the pencils, in my opinion. I look forward to seeing your Crayola challenge. I have several different types and brands of pencils and am always very interested in seeing how different pencils work on different papers. Thank you for this much-needed video!

Thank you for this. I have stayed away from pdf coloring pages because I just didn't know what paper to buy. Now I know and will go with the Neenah it sounds like a good place to start. Appreciate you taking the time to help us all out. Now that I will have decent papers, I would like to suggest (and sorry if you have done this), but have a color-along with your color pages. Maybe have one monthly where you put one of your pages on sale for that month (or with one like the donut one, I really like that one, yum!), share a color palette/swatch, and let us color along with you. I am looking forward to purchasing and using your color catalog and color theory, oh, and the Easy Floral Doodling, that one looks like a lot of fun.

FYI - I tried printing on Strathmore Colored Pencil paper using my Epson ET-3760 ink jet. I think it printed out just fine and can't wait to start coloring on it! I did have to trim the paper to 8 1/2" to fit in the paper tray though. I was a bit surprised that the colored pencil paper is not bright white like my Creative Haven coloring books. :)

A bit late, but I saw your comment - that's what I'm afraid of too - off white, or beige coloured paper, not white for my planner sheets; for colouring or mid-tonal based pictures having an off-white paper is fine, but I need crisp white for admin. I saw some nice whites in the video, but they were quite hard to really get to see them; and an Officeworks is just too far from me to go and flick through for 'feel'. Off to pay a premium at the local office depot, ouch. That's if they even stock any of the paper that Sarah recommend, haha!! :)

This is super helpful. I've been meaning to get into some colouring pages, for the days where I just don't have the energy for drawing from imagination/starting from scratch... and while I know quite a bit about paper, and what I want for the different media I use - this had me stumped. I don't know anything about what works for printing colouring pages. So thank you! You've narrowed it down a lot with this video. Now to figure out which one the print shop will let me use in their printers 😂 (I really need to get my own)

Use a straight through printer like Epson Artisian this way the paper thickness and size doesn't matter as much. These can print poster size prints to us letter as well as the thickest watercolor paper. Even use it with velvet paper to make prints of artworks.

I have a finicky printer, but I also don't print everything out. My choice for colored pencils are this order: Grumacher watercolor paper/mixed media paper; Canson Mixed Media/Watercolor; Neenah Bristol Vellum in white, gray and tan, Strathmore toned papers, kraft paper, then other watercolor paper/mixed media paper. The above specific also take inktense and gouache fairly well if a minimum water is used. I like the Grumacher the best right now because I occasionally use solvent. I do like the Canson Mixed Media but don't care for their wire rings. The kraft cardstock is great for mixed media where I'm trying to figure out the highlights and shadows. My choice for daily journal/bullet journal is colored pencil, then watercolor, then gouache. I'm really not much of a marker person unless I plan on using colored pencil over them...mostly because I think they're harsh, and because they mostly bleed through everything...unless I use something like kids washable markers which don't. I save my expensive 100% cotton watercolor paper for only watercolor.

Thank you, very helpful. I have been trying to do a picture on Strathmore Bristol Vellum with Luminance and Derwent Lightfast and just could not cover all the white. I switched to Bristol Smooth and it was much better. Instead of getting the 9x12, I found an 11x17 size and cut it in half. It went through the printer just fine and was much cheaper per page.

@annachronistic 3 жыл бұрын
Bleeding through with marker doesn’t matter if you put a thin piece of cardboard behind it. Different types of marker paper give you a different effect with marker as well. Bristol tends to suck out the color, vellum tends to pool the ink on top so you have to be really careful not to smear it it gives you a more intense color, and something like Bee paper is a happy medium between Bristol And vellum.

So, basically, I should just stick with my Neenah? Yup, guess so. I print a lot. I pull my colouring books apart and just print what I want to color, by scanning first. I often print out 5x7 (half a sheet...I don't know what you call inches) as it comes out nicer when you have larger areas to fill in, it saves on pencil and marker usage, and I get two different pictures on one sheet of paper! I just cut them in half before I start colouring. However, I am going to switch, if possible, to the Neenah you recommended. I have always gone by weight and brightness in cardstock. Now, to check on the price. Oh, and look how much Neenah you get compared to the others! Thank you.

I’m Australian too and I did my own marker paper test with 80gsm Reflex Copy Paper, 110gsm visual art diary paper, and 160gsm J Burrows Digital Copy Paper (all available from Officeworks), and for a non-specific paper, the 160gsm J Burrows paper is an amazing and accessible budget choice for handling markers! I digitally download a lot of my colouring books specifically because I know they’re printed on poor quality paper that won’t withstand markers and layering, and the 160gsm is a comfortable weight for both printing and using markers on!! Practically no bleeding, nice layering capacity, takes awhile to bleed or stain all the way through onto whatever is underneath it, and inexpensive too!

160gsm drawing paper, is the industry standard for papers designed for color pencils. The papers that are designed for ink,are usually 200gsm or around that area.same goes for mixed media papers. Watercolor papers come in a range of 200gsm to 640 gsm with 300gsm being the most common. Sketching paper usually is 90gsm and Graphite drawin papers 120gsm and less often even 150gsm, like the Hahnemuhle Dessin 150gsm which is one of the best,if not the best drawing type paper. Even though a mixed media paper, like Fabriano Accademia 200gsm,is perfect, for professional finished artwork, that is going to be sold, it's better to use Hot pressed Watercolor papers even for drawing. Arches Hot pressed, is the best for graphite, where for coloured pencils like Polychromos or charcoal, the best is Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed extra white. The best sketchbook for dry mediums or ballpoint pens, is Canson 180 Artbook,or Canson Universal (same paper on both). Paper is very important, so I hope this helps, anybody who reads it. PS Tip: Sketching paper and drawing paper, are 2 different types of paper and one, won't work like the other and vice versa.

Thank you! I am excited to use the 100% cotton papers properly soon for my artwork. I’m interested to see just how much better they are with the layering and details of a larger piece over a few hours!

If you can get hold of it the Claire Fontaine satine works well for coloured pencils. Expensive, but if you are doing something to sell it is good.

I typed in number 38 and I landed here. Actually I typed in 038 and I landed here. The 38th landed me at a 404 not found screen. LOL I forgot to leave in 0. Oops. I believe I watch this it is good to refresh my mind. Looking forward to watching it again. I thoroughly enjoyed your live stream that I watched after the fact. Thanks for leaving the extra minutes before the official start of the session. Blessings.

You can use thicker paper on your printer and you can get very heavy printer paper. I did this 30+ years ago with my comic so achieve very good results.

Hi, as always, thank you for this video, and the written article. Both help a lot! I have a comment about the Printing. Not only need to check the size of paper the printer can handle, but also the WEIGHT of the paper. If we read carefully the specifications and the instruction manual of the printer, it will be stated somewhere the maximum weight allowed for the printer. The maximum weight my printer can handle is 165 gsm, so printing on bristol papers or Canson 220 is not an option for me :(

Honestly as long as your willing to accept the consequences of having to fish out jammed paper from your printer ive been running 300lb+ watercolor paper and every other kind of art paper imaginable thru all my printers from hps, cansons, brothers and finally my amazing epson, and ive never actually damaged the print head, the rollers or anything else. The only thing to worry about is the printer ink and it smudging when you try to use any kind of color pencil blending medium, water or alcohol markers or watercolors over the line work youve printed out.

Thank You Sarah!! So Very Helpful!! Truly a wealth of information that will help many with the confusion & frustration when first printing out coloring images!! I'm not sure if you have done your pencil sharpener video you mentioned but my vote for best all round budget sharpener is the Faber Castell 3in1 only downside is that I wear out the blades so quickly but it is affordable enough that I can just buy a new one about every 4-6 months!! Thanks again for all your commitment & hard work!! Cheers!!

All the paper terms being listed was funny to me. I tend to buy Bristol and a mixed media for my art, but I also make my own too which gives me more control over thickness and weight.

0:37 That is so so true even with Watercolors! Paper is absolutely the most important part as you can paint with the best paints but still have horrible results because of the cheap paper that we used!

I made some protest signs using a watercolour bristol pad and sharpies, and I really liked how it turned out. The colours were deep and the drawing pad stiff enough for me to hold up. I would like something bigger tho, like A3-2, I realize I like drawing big. But alas, stores won't let me in to buy more art supplies. Gonna have to buy online. At least I can browse for more options.

I have the polychromos collection, amazing colored pencils for my markers, you are so close too 100K!!!!! I have not tested the bristol series, other that Fabriano which I could say its good with markers and pencils (but you will reach a limit) I have used polychromos on canson mi teintes colored paper, and I can say that wax based prisma are better. Watercolor paper has the tooth, and its good for mixed media, in hot press is not so demanding with markers. In cold press is the best for the extreme realistic portraits fabriano artistico is on another level (I am not worthy as well as luminance pencils)
