There really are people who don’t believe colorism and featurism exists, and that’s the crazy part. They see some curly hair, mixed light skin, european looking features and all their self hate, comes to the surface 😂 💀 SAD!

I was raised around mostly white people. My mother went out of her way to show us beautiful black men and women and to tell us how beautiful our skin and hair were. Later she told me that the culture told us everyday in subtle ways that we were not beautiful and it was her job to fill us with good images. My sister and I have never wanted to be white and never ever thought white people were more attractive. We have to be proactive in affirming our children’s beauty and cultivate their appreciation of it because the world tells them so many negative things about themselves.

As an East African girl (from Rwanda) living in France, I have not especially thin nose and i'm a dark-skinned Woman, I'm never seen as an East African but as a West African, and many persons think that I'm Senegalese or from neighbor countries of Senegal. And the problem is that in France and in Europe most of the time, Black African Women, and especially from West Africa, are not seen as beautiful persons and when East African are a little bit known (there is not many East African right here), there are so much preferred as West African women, because there are seen as Light skinned and with thin face features. And so, there is real ambiguous colorism because of, I think, not only what people think of Africans and especially of East Africans, but all East Africans, their different features, are not represented (in media especially).

The root of colorism in Africa dates back to colonialism. At the top of the hierarchy were White people then mixed blood Africans. They became part of the elite. The darker Africans were at the lowest part of the economic ladder. This has remained true even till today. It's going to take a whole lot re-education to destroy this mindset but unfortunately our leaders in Africa (I'm from Ghana and also lived in Sweden for almost 14 years) will not change until we make the change

I have a somehow different thought about this video. You express annoyance about people asking you if you are from the East Africa or the horn. But I don't think that is the problem. The problem in my opinion is people making the east African look as the attractive or preferred look. It is true ( of course there are exceptions) that different parts of Africa have different looks. People from the horn (sharper features) look different from people from west Africa(rounder features). But our outrage in my opinion should NOT be focused on people associating features to parts of Africa but for people promoting eurocentric standard of beauty. Yes, people from west Africa have rounder features, but that is BEAUTIFUL as well. So i see no problem, if people ask Sauda or your sister if she was from Ethiopia or somalia or kenya because she has features of those areas, but there is a big problem in describing rounder features as " hard" or "manly". We are all beautiful in our unique ways!

@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 4 жыл бұрын
@@jtorie1 I don't think they look similar at all. I don't think it is the region, I just think their features vary from person to person. Yes, they may all have a range of brown to black skin and most, not all, have 4C hair. But features, I'm amazed at just how different people look from person to person. However, that range exists in much of Africa. However, in some areas, you have a change in the hair texture and a more aquiline type of nose and MENA head shape. You'll find that in west and East, not just East Africa. In the west you have Tauregs and some of the Fulani and in Nigeria, Shuwa Arabs. In South Africa, though, you'll get folks that are lighter in skin tone and some have epicanthic folks in their eyes due to Khoisan mixes.

As a Black American woman, I notice that Africans perceive very small differences. For example, the Hutu and the Tutsi in Rwanda. The difference between them was really hard for non Africans to perceive. Also, in the US and Europe, there's so much admixture in the black population that the variety regarding skin tone and features is much greater and easier to perceive.

However, I find it disturbing to learn that there is the same colorism and featurism in Africa like among African Americans in the United States and probably other places in the diaspora. Good Day, the term you are looking for is Cushitic/Cushite. Not "western". Cushitic features are found in the horn of the continent. Your features are original African features, just a different branch as compared to "typical" Bantu "West African". This disparity is what lead to the Rwandan Genocide, unfortunately. Featurism, like you mentioned. Where the Tutsi have a sharper longer nose and neck sometimes, compared to "typical" Bantu looking Hutu. We are the most diverse group of peoples(African/Negroid). One love. It's all African Beauty, much like yourself. Bless up!

@@ThisIsMissCheeky I understand. What was meant in the above explanation is the combined association of "color depth" and "features" which are typical of Congolese people. Like this, many consider these physical attributes "African/West African". The above is what the world "sees" and considers "African" because of a lack of knowledge of the variation of ethnicities on the continent. So I stated that Cushitic features are African aswell, just different from "typical Bantu West African".

Southern Africans are migrates from great lakes and central Africa, mixed with khoisan types, so physical features are diverse. Black Africa has very diverse looks. Like all regions. With east African bantu speakers, the south cushites who were inhabitants before arrival of bantu farmers from central Africa can be seen 8n some people, same as khoisan ancestry in nguni and tswana in southern Africa.

You are both beautiful AND I hope you can see how your own featurism shows up in this video when you re-watch it, as others have pointed out. NOTE: THIS IS A LONG BUT THOUGHT PROVOKING POST, PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING! THANKS 😇💚 I think this discussion is on to something for sure. As young Black American man i have noticed how colorism and featurism shapes our "intraracial" beauty standards (especially/ primarily for women). Ever notice how Black men for the most part are allowed to have West African (more round and broad) features and be dark skinned (& be considered attractive) but women are expected to have some level of "Exoticness" to them... Defining exotic as it relates to the black community in America: ..... Exoticness on women can be described as when a black woman exhibits a preferred set of features not typically seen on black women-- in some cases these features can even be non black features on a black woman. For example, having light skin--not having lighter brown or milk chocolate skin rather the deep skin but habing peanut butter, beige, or light tan reddish skin. Having keen (or sharp features like horn african features) which in the US resembles European features to a degree. Having loose curly hair or hair that shows a curl pattern rather than 4c hair. Having at least one of these features makes a black woman "prettier, better, or more exotic" than the next black woman per society's point of view. The problem with this is it creates an image of Black women that really does not exist on a grand scale. Women who naturally exhibit 1 or more of these features tend to A) be mixed race or have some sort on non black DNA or B) women who change themselves to be in these descriptions via cosmetic "enhancements" ie buying color contacts, wearing a texture of hair that isnt natural, wearing desire altering makup, or even bleaching their skin. How (certain) women of the Horn of Africa are looked at in America (via the Black community's perspective): ..... Like you both touched on, more Black people globally are moving toward wearing their hair naturally, embracing their features, not worrying about their skin tone, etc. However, in an effort to appeal to that some people in media want to hire, showcase, or praise more beautiful Black american + african women. The issue here is that West African (unambiguous) black features especially on women are not fully embraced yet. So the media, rappers, or beauty campaigns turn to woman who are not mixed race necessarily but black, exhibit "desirable" features naturally, and look more "exotic". This translates to praising, hyping up, or exotifying Horn African Women. Think about that....love the video ladies. Hope my post was read fully!

Saying that you look different do not make you better or worse, it is just a fact. Ethiopian and Eritreaan do not look like other Africans, it is just a fact. As Tunisian, libyan etc look different. Tusti people who in majority live in Rwanda today and Ethiopian/Eritrean do not look the same. Yes, Ethiopia and Eritrean are most likely mixed due to all migrations and exchanges that have been taking place in that part Africa. Can you explain to me why in their majority all the northern African countries are Muslim? Do you think they just become Muslim because they were enlighted one day by Allah? Or because there is a simple historical reason. Muslims/Arabs salesmans and slave owners have been navigating and settling in those northern part and have been spreading their religion throughout centuries.

I see what you both mean, the reason why people that have such hard time seeing individuals like you as you are is because they don't know enough about looks and genetics and don't understand what traits the children will inherit and how common some traits will be and how rare some will be depending on who they get with but it's because many people often don't watch who they get with that turn traits so common that they mistake those traits for authentic but in why in Africa's case the reason they thought of other place's when they saw you was because of everybody where they live commonly look and some who learn about Africa's other regions will often times see individuals who look like them and assume that this is what everyone looks like unless its further east but overall I can understand why its perplexing to see somebody from the same place as them who looks different because many don't of the Fulani and namadi tribe or the Dravidians of India🌏 and the australia islanders🌐.
