So i gathered my girls up to discuss the drama involved with being a dark skinned girl in the present day Nigerian society. What it means to be termed 'dark skinned' in Nigeria and the perceptions and social challenges we face. Hope you enjoy this. will be uploading the concluding part of this discussion in my next video.

whaaaaaat? it’s so crazy to me that colorism would be such a problem in african communities. I expect it in the west/USA, but I thought knowing your culture and who you are means you are raised with pride. it’s disgusting how dark skinned people are made to feel bad about how they look on their OWN CONTINENT. that’s nuts 😭😭

Hi guys, now just to clear something up, I realise I probably should have put up a disclaimer with this video but let me explain it here. As people of African descent we are all termed "dark skinned" people, but the concept of this chitchat topic is based on the TYPICAL NIGERIAN PERSPECTIVE of what light skin and dark skin is amongst we Nigerians. The lady on the right and any other skintone lighter than hers is what we NIGERIANS refer to as "light skin" while the other lady by the left and I are referred to as "dark skin". The essence of this chitchat is to help people understand that even amongst we dark skinned people, there is still some level of divide and discrimination against darker, richer skin tones such as mine. So I just thought to clear that up! Thank u for watching and be sure to check out my other videos.

Why do you have on so much make up to make your skin look lighter and your nose thinner while talking about "colorism in Africa"? And then the other guess has somebody else's hair [either indian or brazilian] on top of her natural hair. How hipocrotical!

The fact that these colorism issues exist even among Africans is somehow mind blowing to me. (I'm African-American so I'm well acquainted with these issues in America.)

We are still slaves to the same white supremacy mentality here in Africa and we still try to conform to the european standards of beauty, its unfortunate but its true, dont forget that most african countries were colonized so this is how it started

@@DumebiLea Very true! I guess from an AA perspective, it's still hard to wrap my head around the fact that these issues would exist in a place where black - and particularly darker skinned people - are the majority as well as being the birthplace of black people worldwide. But yes, colonialism has negatively affected so many communities of color around the world so I suppose Africa would be no exception.

This Nigerian colorism negativity against chocolate skintones as opposed to those of a lighter to fair hue, in a land where 90% of the population is of a medium to dark hue.....is madness, super bizarre and really a sad display of self hatred. 😕 GOD FORBID!!! 🙏🏽

Didi Maduba you are very correct, but we are actually speaking from the general "nigerian" perspective where people are categorised as either fair or dark, someone with the skin tone or lighter than the lady on the right is termed "light skinned" in Nigeria, so that's the angle we were coming from. She considered light-skinned in Nigeria specifically, because the average complexion there is very dark. It's not like in America where most black people are brown. So your complexion is determined by the "contrast" in your skin tone, in relation to the majorities skin tone.

In America you call mixed people light skin that's your problem. In Africa mixed people are not considered black but mixed. Therefore my skin color is light skin in Africa because I am not mixed but light compared to the average black person. Do you understand???

No one in this video is light skin🥴 most of the time light skin means mixed race or light skin black American women who are still essentially still mixed race. You guys are beautiful but this colorism talk has to be let go. SMH I will never understand how AFRICA allowed these idea into its society when most people there are dark skin. Here I am in the US believing that these issues are so much better in Africa and that you guys praise the darkest skin. This is crazy to me!

First.... Y'all look candyface goooood... Buh i think these issues are everywhere. Each industry has its own preferences. For instance, sound media houses favour people with a little english accent. Having any kind of local accent mixed with your spoken english cuts you away from job opportunities which is really unfair, at least i think it is. The military favours taller men, male models have to be tall and a bit hunky etc. Its jes preferences sha..as long as rights are not being denied, i m cool. Buh as for the craze of skin change amd our perception of it, it jes shows our level of self inflicted insecurities and self esteem. Its totally unnecessary to change yo skin colour. Its a matter of finding your fit. If your imdustry doesnt favour your looks, dont fake it, jes walk away and find peace someplace else. Thumbs up dumebi

You spoke facts. But now about skin color, the preference of light skin over darker skin Especially in women can be traced back to slavery amd colonialism, light skin was associated with white people hence we were psychological made to think that light skin is better, so when people of African descent feel like their dark skin is not good enough, its an indication of self-hate which has been drummed into our subconscious over generations.
