I think most of us know not to outshine the bride or wear white/ivory. If a woman does, she's likely doing so. Brides, I hope you are more thoughtful than to expect your guests to wear high-end clothing or certain colors to match the "theme". Your bridal party will be doing that I would hope you would cherish the presence of your guests over luxury ensembles. Though the day truly is about you and your husband, don't toss to the curb the feelings and finances of your guests. Thanks.

My 3 stepdaughters wore black at our marriage with their dad... 😂 yep, the first few years were tough!

I would never wear black to a wedding unless it was specified as an evening black tie event in winter. Even then, I would check with the bride or her Mother. Also never white or ivory ever, unless requested by the bride. (No white at all if the family is Asian: white is the color of mourning in many Asian countries.) Wear flat shoes at beach or other outdoor weddings, involving lawns and gravel paths, etc. Weddings typically involve extended family and multiple generations. I always chose to Dress in a way that even the older &/or conservative family members will not feel is inappropriate. Especially if I attend weddings involving cultures other than my own. I will research their cultural wedding traditions, so as to cause no inadvertent offense.

Our son got married on a llama farm in the smoky mountains. It was a wedding venue so we weren’t tromping around in the dirt. We were all asked to wear black. Men in tuxedo. It was quite unique. The bride won a beautiful sparkling black wedding gown. I wore a black lace dress.

I was always told never wear white or black to a wedding and until my late 40s I would have considered it inappropriate to ever wear pants to a wedding , or funeral. (That being said, I would never wear anything bright or floral to a funeral either.) I was raised with a lot of old, southern, manners. I must say, though, that I think brides these days are getting totally carried away with dictating what guests are expected to wear at their weddings. Specifying that a wedding is casual, formal, black tie, garden, etc. is fine, even asking guests to NOT wear a specific color is acceptable, having a theme is acceptable, BUT, it must be understood that not everyone will be able to adhere to your request. Deal with it! It doesn’t ruin your day if someone is dressed inappropriately. It is only ruined if you bring it to everyone’s attention or you cause a scene. Every wedding or funeral I’ve ever been to, there is someone who just doesn’t get it. There is always someone way over dressed or way underdressed. ALWAYS. The first time I went to a funeral for my husband’s side of the family there was a family that showed up looking like they maybe just paused doing yard work or something to run down to the funeral, and an elderly woman who, apparently, thought she was a bridesmaid at an 80s wedding. I later came to realize they came to every family event dressed the same way. On my side, I have a niece who always shows up in the height of fashion to show off that she has more money than the rest of us and a cousin, who can be described as a Bountiful Beauty, that shows up showing more skin than you would see at a beach. She is actually getting married soon and I am kind of excited to see what kind of wedding dress she comes up with, lol. What I am trying to say here is just let it go. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter.

When she was 4 she announce that from that point forward her birthday would be celebrated at Thanksgiving instead because having a birthday at Christmas was the pits. @ewonnestrand7298 Yes, late Afternoon Wedding, with a dinner reception. Formal attire. Seated, formal, 4 course meal, cake cutting, 1st dance of the Bride and groom, and dancing into the night. I always wear a modest, full length gown, to formal events. That's just my preference as a modest woman. Wrap, shawl, jacket, to cover my arms, at all times. As little skin showing as possible. Hair up. Sober and dignified. I dance with the Bride and Groom, all evening, till it's officially time to go home. And then I drive myself home. 🕊🌿🌳🌲

The weddings I go to in the UK are all 'Morning Suits' (that is what men wear in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot - a tail suit and top hat. It is appropriate for women to wear Day clothes - not evening dress if the men are in tail suits. Smart Day clothes will cover most of your skin - so no decoletage , bare shoulders, or high splits in the skirt. Oh and also a hat.

I personally don’t like to see black at a wedding. Unless it’s goth, or a vey formal event. Navy blue is a great alternative to black. Unless formal I love to see upbeat, happy if you will, colors. Even patterns unless it looks like a moo-moo. Weddings are a celebration 🍾 I will be wearing a dress with fancy cowgirl boots to a Texas wedding coming up soon. I’ve never done that before. But the bride and groom requested. I’m excited to see the wedding!

Everyone expects guests to know that !!!!.....I went to one this month and nobody wore white, they chose black mainly, which I find gloomy & lazy, imagine when the bride & groom land on all all-black party!!!!

Although I would ALWAYS respect the wishes of the bride, my mother decided to wear her beaded ecru blouse and matching skirt to my wedding. I did NOT care!!! I also had a friend who wore a full-on white dress with matching white duster, and I did NOT care!! It didn't even occur to me that someone was trying to compete with me in dress. My self-esteem did not depend on anyone who dressed in ANY color. As I was attending law school at the time, I knew that everyone was just wearing what they had available. I was just thankful that those who could come to my wedding, did so. I'm now going to a wedding this summer and can't wear anything in my closet because of all of the color restrictions. This is NOT by bride's mandates; it is merely because of other people's expectations. So, I can't wear a white dress with blue trim because it is too white. I can't wear a white top with black skirt and a colorful scarf because I was told that both white and black were taboo colors. I look hideous in red, apricot, and pink, not to mention that as an older (plumper!) woman, I need something that flatters my figure. ARGGH!

Traditionally, speaking, white is typically reserved for the bride, but if the bride is OK with it and you want to mix things up then by all means do you wish. Black is not taboo, especially for evening, weddings, and I’ve been to Black Tie weddings, and black is my go to for occasion like that- in other words, where is something appropriate that is comfortable and makes you feel good. Remember that a wedding it’s all about the couple, all eyes are on them, and nobody’s really worrying about what a guest is wearing, except the guest. Have fun, let me know how it goes. In general, etiquette is just not practiced anymore, nor are rules recognized in dress. I was at a ballet where people wore jeans. Fine restaurants are viewed no better than a fast food restaurant. People dress as they want anymore. I doubt if the average wedding has people worried about wearing white at a wedding.

Yea I had someone wear a white (off white) dress at my wedding. It did feel a bit weird but it was very obviously not a wedding dress in its shape/design, and also I was too happy to be bothered. But yeah I guess its not knowledge to all 🫣🙈 I would NEVER do that myself! Going to a wedding this summer and not really sure about the dress code. It didnt say in the invite, but it all starts in the evening (7 pm). The bride is Syrian, and they are kind of known to be over the top glamourusly dressed, so I’m a bit nervous 😬 I have found a deess I like, its long (floor lenght) but not like a ball gown. Colorfull patterns in pinks, turquoise and some golden flecks. A little Maroccan inspired. Good or bad idea??? Its really pretty but I’m not sure if I should be wearing knee lenghth cocktail dress instead? Or ball gown? Is it too much or not enough??? I’m connected to the groom (he’s my cousins son) and I really don’t know the bride at all. Help??

Hello Heidi! Thanks for this video. I would appreciate some input. I am attending my other half's daughter's wedding end of October. Ceremony and reception outdoors in a covered area starting at 4pm at a fancy ranch with fall colors decor. Sunday Best attire! The groomsmen are wearing all black tuxes, bridal party satin dresses in fall colors. Bride said I can wear my color and style of choice. I will be escorted in. Sunday's Best has me confused. Forecast right now expected to be 75 cooling to about 56 later. Thoughts and insight?

Hello. Kathi! Thanks so much for watching, and what an interesting description for the wedding attire! This is very interesting, because the groomsmen will be in black tie, yet you’re told to wear your Sunday best, which would not be cocktail. I think in this case they’re using the term “Sunday best” to mean wear something nice. I think this gives you a broad spectrum of things to choose. You’re going to be outside at a fancy ranch, some will be in black tie. The bridesmaids are going to be fancy, if you’re feeling fancy wear one of your best dresses, any color is great, except white. Do you wanna really look your best, because you’re going to be escorted in and all Eyes will be on you as you enter. I would bring a little wrap because it sounds like it could get cool in the evening, but if there’s a lot of dancing, that can always warm you up quickly lol. Please keep me in the loop and let me know what you choose to wear, I’d be very interested to hear how it all went. I really think that wearing something you’re comfortable in and is one of your better garments is the way to go on this. I really like the juxtaposition of the black tie at the fancy ranch. Hello! That’s very interesting! In days of yesterday year, bridesmaids used to dress just like the bride! There was a good reason for that, back in the day brides could be kidnapped, take it away from the groom, so to speak and then the bride and her attendance were all dressed the same, it was hard to know which one to kidnap! Luckily those days are long gone, but an interesting choice for this bride. However, in today’s world, Just, as you wish, especially on your wedding day It’s the one day that is all about you! You might look at a flattering solid color maxi dress and wear a shawl or dressy looking cardigan in soft drape fabric. Then jazz that up with snazzy shoes and purse, bold earrings. Shop your closet first so you don’t have to spend money if you can avoid it. You might already have the perfect shoes.

By the way, I strongly believe you don’t have to spend a lot of money to be stylish, I shop at resale shops, and I always look for bargains. I rarely ever pay full retail for anything. There are a lot of good buys online as welll. However, I think your red dress sounds terrific, and I love tea-length. Temu offers pretty cocktail, semi formal dresses all sizes 20.00 bucks. There are jacketed choices or simple dresses or more dressy. No I wouldn't wear them IN the bridal party but they are nice, cheap, and will last a few events.

It’s perfectly fine to wear the same color as the wedding party, usually colors are kind of common, whether it’s a fall wedding, or a summer wedding, many times the wedding party wears a pretty common color. However, there is another school of thought; if you don’t want to be confused with the wedding party, or just stand out on your own, a little bit, then, if you happen to know the color of the wedding party, opt for something quite different. Either way you’ll be fine and I’m sure you’ll look amazing! Hello, my son is getting married this coming October in Massachusetts in a rural town in Berkshire County. I have a beautiful black patterned evening cocktail dress that is similar shape to the one you’re wearing. It’s a Jacki-O feature neckline with a jewel. I wanted to wear boots considering it’s an outdoor ceremony at the country club and it’s probably going to be chilly at 4 o’clock it’s certainly going to be dark. Am I allowed to wear boots with a 2 inch heel no black traditional? Thank you! It’s pretty casual over here lol

Hello! What a very considerate question! But, you are fine with blue shoes! It is still considered bad taste to wear, white or cream, but your shoes, being blue are just fine! I know about the something old new borrowed and blue, but you as a guest can wear blue shoes with confidence.💕💕💕🛼👠

Excited to be invited to weddings?? NO! 🙄 How about DREADING IT....at least Summer weddings! All the rules are exhausting enough, but most brides are young and not thinking of older guest's concerns - at least not women guests - such as: 1) Why are they always getting married in the Summer??? Do they think we all want to be sweating with nice clothes on and frizzy hair and make up melting?? Why would THEY, themselves want to be hot and uncomfortable in an expensive wedding dress? I've never understood this! 2) And some of us don't like our bodies and don't want to be in sleeveless, strapless styles which is 90% of what everyone wears and what designers make. Even some of us that are ok with our bodies are more conservative and feel more comfortable covered. I always said these things even in my 20s, but now well into my 40s having MASSIVE hot flash issues and a bit of weight redistributed (and not in the right places 🤷‍♀️) what are we to do?? If someone invited me to an evening wedding in October or November, I'd have many things to wear! I own great black dresses - some with pretty embellishments (like the dress you're wearing here in this video) but all thats out there in stores or online for Summer are florals (which I despise.) Therefore, even though black is accepted now, I think its a bit much for a 🌞 Summer wedding in the sunny mid-day. Also age is an issue. 40s and 50s are that awkward, in-between midlife time where we shouldn't dress too young or revealing, yet we don't want to choose styles that make us look old and frumpy. Ugh. I've been hunting for something to wear to a June wedding that has longer sleeves, and below the knee and its been like finding a needle in haystack. I just told a friend the spring/summer dresses offered are either hideous florals that look like something from Little House on the Prairie, or my Grandmother's closet ... OR... skimpy dresses that look like I work as a stripper!!! Sadly, there is VERY little in-between those two extremes.

Hello! I have read your comment two or three times, I absolutely love it, and I so agree with you! I read a statistic recently that said, the most popular time for weddings, now is in the fall! Maybe have something to do with the wardrobe! When it’s hard to find something appropriate to wear, whether it’s appropriate for your body style, for the occasion, for the weather, or whatever, something I think is very helpful, is a wrap. And the summer there are very sheer cotton loose, weave wraps, but even on a sweltering day, you can get away with. And they can cover up a multitude of Imperfections, like arms, or whatever. If it’s a chilly evening, or later, in the season, a heavier wrap can do. I think this is your best bet, I never travel without one, and it can get me through a wedding, an evening out, a chilly afternoon, or visiting places of worship, where my head needs to be covered while on a trip. Invest in a couple of wraps for different seasons, you can find them on Amazon or someplace like that for very little money, it does not need to cost lots of money to have that extra little piece that polishes off whatever you have on. Make this wrap, your best friend, and trust me it will get you through whatever you need to get through! Meanwhile, I feel you, sister!💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Hello! I agree with the no white, but the black and red, in my opinion, are OK,. I’ve been to many black Thai weddings, and I’ve worn black to all of them. It just depends, and the bottom line is be very respectful to the wedding party, and dress appropriately. I’m curious have you ever been invited to a wedding where you saw this on an invitation? @@HeidiDulebohn1 I suspect auto correct has gotten the better of you. Unless you meant to type black Thai wedding, rather than black-tie wedding. I believe you mentioned in your video that you've heard of couples wanting an all white wedding. I assume you meant that the invitation requests that guests dress in white. If it means something else, please explain. To answer your question, no. I've not been invited to a wedding that stipulated what guests should wear. My conservative Midwestern upbringing taught me that white is reserved for first time brides, black is reserved for funerals and red is too provocative for church, including weddings. Women's shoulders should be covered. Necklines & hemlines should be modest. Perhaps these concepts seem old fashioned for some but, following those rules will avoid disrespecting anyone.

Wedding guests not wearing white is an American thing. Europeans don't care. Grace Kelly wore white to Prince Charles and Lady Diana's wedding. So did Camilla. Queen Elizabeth wore white to the sevond marriage of her daughter Princess Anne. Queen Noor of Jordan wore all white (and a huge white hat) at the 1995 wedding of Greek Crown Prince Pablo and Marie Chantal.

Perhaps, too risky to wear to a wedding, in particular, however, thankfully, those old Timey rules are long gone and yes, feel free to wear red to a wedding. But, the old rule of never wearing white to a wedding still stands, white is reserved for the bride, and nobody wants to upstage the bride on her special day. Went to a wedding at a camp ground. The festive were 2-3 days depending on when you wanted to come. Family was housed in the cabins used for staff and kids during the summer. We were ti old nice camping or casual. It was confusing but as we asked questions they were trying to avoid coat and tie except perhaps the wedding party and I’m not sure they had ties! There was a variety of things worn but all of them could have been worn to an office, at least as I recall. Some dress were long but they weren’t fancy. Bride did wear a dress with a train. Groom wore a tie and vest as I recall. Loved being able to visit over longer periods of time. And yes there were small children but never a problem.

I worked with a nice woman but she had little to no common sense. We were both going to a mutual friend’s wedding. I told her she needed to wear underwear, which she rarely did. I should have told her how to dress as well. She came to the wedding in a short white lace dress. I couldn’t believe it. She said, don’t you like my dress and I said yes, very pretty but not appropriate. She couldn’t understand why until I told her that a white lace dress is what the bride usually wears, not the guests.

Red, groom, black, funerary, white, no no, blah, blah, blah. I have no intention of buying any new clothing. I have two "wedding " dreses. Both are black. No one will suffer by what I wear. The "rules" about red or purple in reference to the groom made my eyes roll. Get a grip, people. Everyone will be looking at the bride.

You ask a great question, basically, do these rules still apply today? To me, they do, but, of course, within. Realize that some weddings are more casual and much less restricted by tradition. Conversely, other weddings want to honor long-held customs and traditions. The bottom line is, be respectful, and be mindful of the level of formality and adherencance to tradition of the wedding you have kindly been invited to attend. Make an effort, be respectful, and have fun!💕💕

As far as I know there is absolutely NOTHING that can possibly upstage a bride. If people wear inappropriate clothing they will be either sneered at or laughed at behind hands. There are only two "prohibited" colours for weddings, black and, of course, white. You are wrong Heidi, it is never okay to wear black no matter how much etiquette has evolved.
