Here we have a drummer who made history, whose amazing skills and long solos are now legend. A talented man who is the leader and the mind behind some of the most inspirational, influential, innovative and interesting acts from the late Sixties and Seventies. Thank you Jon for your awesome music and for being a constant source of inspiration. I am no one but I know that all the great drummers thank you. Don't care about the little envious insects trying to criticize you. We know the truth

Hiseman is very much one of the great underrated drummers - I was lucky enough to see him perform way back circa 74-75 as John Hiseman's Tempest, and also with Colosseum in its various guises - he is astonishing, and I don't speak only of his drumstick juggling, impressive though it is - he was awesome every time I saw him play. I also appreciate the likes & brilliance of Bill Bruford, Ian Paice and Carl Palmer, Omar Hakim....John Bonham was unique before the world lost him, and his son Jason is very impressive too - so many, living and now passed....the list of greats is a very long list. I have seen countless live bands over this past 45+ years, and in all honesty, Hiseman belongs within the top 10 drummers without doubt, and quite possibly the top 5. Imagine his drumming power alongside Gary Moore's raw explosive guitar and you had Colosseum for a short while. Man, I miss those days but the memories are as fresh as ever.

@pooperscoopr69 This is a little part of a solo lasting 15 minutes. Go to Drummerworld page dedicated to Hiseman to see the whole thing. The fact that leaves you astonished about Jon is that not only he is an outstanding technician and has incredible independence, coordination and speed in his arms and legs, but that he always demonstrates great feel and groove too. His playing is musical and melodious. He has style, and class, and he is always at the service of music. He is a real musician

Dear Jon: you were decent enough to reply to an email I sent you around 5 years ago where I raved about how my favourite record EVER was Valentyne Suite. I mentioned that Dick Heckstall-Smith played one of the most wonderful sax solos ever (ok Baker Street is the pinnacle) and you told me that "sadly Dick Heckstall-Smith had died". Personally, as a decent drummer, I thought I was probably as good as - if not better - than you as a drummer. After searching for you today I discovered this solo "wot you dun". That solo is astonishing Jon and I honestly cannot think of any drummer (apart from maybe Simon Phillips) who could come close to that brilliance. It's just a pity that so many wonderful musicians from Britain are unknown in Oz. How good would it be if you could get someone like Jim Diamond as your singer and then come out to a "Day on The Green". Magic

I usually listen to Metal, so I'm mainly into drummers like Bobby Jarzombek, Gene Hoglan, Mark Zonder, ..., but nothing against others like The Animal or Buddy Rich. Didn't know about Jon Hiseman until i saw him on the Colosseum reunion tour. I totally was blown away.

@TechnicalEvaluation Obviously you can have your own opinion and express it freely. And I respect that. But, while I concur that sometimes even the greats make mediocre things, I don't think this is the case. First: this is only a small part of a way longer solo, and you can find it in its entirety searching for "The machine demands a sacrifice Colonia". Second: to my taste the way you do things is more important than the number or variety of the things you do. And Jon here is playing amazingly.

I really like John Hiseman's playing. I think a lot of what he did in Colosseum is absolutely brilliant. That said, I just don't like this solo- period. Once it starts, it never really goes anywhere or has any real variety within. Just 4 minutes of snare/cymbal bashing, all on the same motif. Meh. Unfortunately, some of the fanboys will put this post down because they can't be objective. Sorry, but just because you are an absolute great in your field, it doesn't mean everything you do is great.

Hey do you know the complete solo? This clip here is just the half of it, watch it completely and I think you will change your opinion, it's also very musical and minimal in some parts. :)

@TechnicalEvaluation Although what he does isn't simple at all, it is very close to perfection. I could be wrong, but he looks on his standard (which is a high level one). Third: as you can notice he is not hitting things in a casual way, but in every single beat and in all of the figures there's real art, skill and mastery. I wouldn't call it "bashing". I can partially see your point, but again, to state those things you should watch the whole thing first.

If any group allows its drummer to do more than 4 bars of drum solo, the entire band should be taken out and shot. BTW I'm a drummer, so drum solos are what is termed "practice", not performance.
