+Peta Hewitt The Prismacolor is just like the Lyra Splendor pencil :) I like the Derwent for blending as it really pushes the colours around and will do so on any type of paper. The Prismacolor and Lyra look perfect for resist techniques and light smoothing, but as blenders, I find they both only seem to work well with certain papers. Thanks for your video :) Very useful.

Thanks for the tips I learn so much from your videos. I'm new to coloring and don't have any pastels. I have and "experimental" coloring book I use to try and learn different techniques. While watching a video from another KZbinr she mentioned that she knew of some folks who used eyeshadow as a background. Soooo, since my daughter bought me an eyeshadow palette last Christmas will all these bright colors I'll never use, I use the eyeshadow as a background in my experimental book over the colored pencil (No blender, burnisher or white pencil used) and I was shocked it worked. So far no rubbing off on other pages. I haven't tried this in my Secret Garden coloring book yet. I have more practicing to do. I really enjoy your videos and glad I subscribe to your channel. Happy Holidays!

I honestly apply my pastels far more carefully than most people, I think. I'm annoyingly careful about using pointy tools around edges, and I don't do any blending, layering or other pastel painting techniques on an already colored page if I can at all avoid; if I do, I make absolutely sure the colored areas are burnished. But if I'm going to do a pastel painted background I put that in first, spray with fixative to preserve the color - super important - then proceed. Thanks for this information, though, because I'm always deciding to do backgrounds after the fact 🤣

this is fab. thank you so much. I really enjoy your videos and tutorials. Ive learned so much from them already. I just have Derwent pencils and to a degree I agree with you about the Derwent blender but not having an alternative I don't have a comparison - apart from a white pencil which, for the purpose of using the pastels for the background, will be a good alternative. I really want to try out my pastels but they are not mega expensive ones but look exactly the same as the ones you use. I suppose I will just have to get on and try it to find put how they perform. Firstly though, I have loads 0f college assignments and work to do (I'm a mature student), so no time for play just yet... I'll let you know how I get on. thank you again Peta. Paula. (UK)

+Paula Gale You're welcome. I suggest experimenting on a back page first. I sacrifice the back page of many of my books to experiment with so I know what to expect. I've ordered a set of cheap Mungyo pastels to try. They have a lot more colours with brighter shades of pigments than my old set. (Although you get only tiny quarter sticks.) I'm interested to see how they perform compared to my Windsor and Newtowns.

Peta, you use Polychromos pencils with this method, that are oil based; however, what if you were to use Prismacolor Premier pencils that are wax based. Would you get the same effect?
@annepearce99265 жыл бұрын
Hi, haven't tried it out for myself yet - but I have wondered this before. There's another colouring KZbinr I follow, called 'red_tifa colours', who has tried it with both. She says she's found you can add pastel backgrounds after colouring with Polychromos pencils and it works OK, but she found it doesn't work as well with Prismacolors (I think that was the brand, they were a wax based one anyway) because the pastel dust stuck to the waxiness. I guess you can kind of see in Peta Hewitt's (the one with the square boxes) test that the Lyra blender and white Polychromos do work a bit better than the Derwent blender. I'm pretty sure the Derwent blender is wax based and the Lyra one is oil based (and, of course the white Polychromos will be oil based too). This also explains why Peta found she preferred the Lyra blender when blending the Polys, too. (....And I've just realised what a 'pencil nerd' I've become!!!!)

Now, did you color allover with the white pencil befor applying the pastel or did you use one of the other ones? You don't say it in the video which one you used in the finished picture.
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
+Astrid S Hi Astrid. I used a colourless blender to colour over only the areas that i had lightly coloured and areas i wanted to leave white. Almost all of the other areas had been coloured fairly firmly with coloured pencils and going over them all would be unnecessary.

@shuttergirlUK8 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused as I didn't see what you did on the final picture... Did you go over the entire coloured area with a blender pencil after you finished the colours? Or did you blend as you went along to seal it? ???
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
+shuttergirlUK Most of the original colours were originally applied firm enough that the colour itself acted as a resist against the pastels contaminated them. For the lighter and white areas I went over them with a colourless blender pencil to 'seal' them so they would resist the pastel. Hope that helps.

How would you use this technique on a fairly large area w/o having to use a blender pencil on each item?
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
+lradon1 Using the blender pencil on each item is unnecessary if the colour was laid down firm enough. I find a moderate amount of pencil pressure on the final layer of colour is quite enough. I only use the blender on areas where the colour has been laid down lightly, or an area has been left deliberately white to seal them.
@Nasreenart8 жыл бұрын
Hi there Peta. I read somewhere that the derwent blender pencil is wax based and therefore not good when blending plochromos because those pencils are oil based and should be blended using oil. That was my thinking but from your demonstration I think I was wrong as it looks just fine.
