whenever I see your tutorials, i always feel, "I can do this!!" They may never come out as polished or look as amazing, but I have improved and my techniques are better and I have learned so much thanks to your tutorials. Thanks so much for taking the time to post these! Your work is amazing as always!

I've just bought a greyscale colouring book and I actually find it easier because all the shading is there. This has helped me learn about shadows in illustrations that are not greyscale. As always, your tutorials are amazingly good Peta. You are my favourite colourist on YT!

So well done. Simple Art For Adults recommended you. The layout of your coloring, blending and the speed coloring is a big help too. Thank you for taking the time and care to help us. Can you do a tutorial or something to tell us the coloring books in your opinion that has the best paper for Prismacolor. Thanks . Off to the next video.

you never seeze to amaze me Peta... I've been following you for quite a while now and learned something useful each and every time. This grey scale style is completely new to me, never knew it even existed so you really got me surprised this time. Thanks so much !

For a good white pencil, with good opacity, try the Caran d'Ache Luminance colored pencil in white. They do have 76 colors in this line, but these are more expensive than polychromos, but the white is fantastic! It's a wax pencil like the Primacolor, but not as soft, holds a point well. And all of the colors have superior lightfastness. I have just used the white and it has me thinking about starting to build a set of these.

Very very nice, thanks for the video!I am currently doing some grayscale drawings from 'color my sketchbook' by Bennett Klein. They are real easy to do, like you say, the picture itself allready has the shadows, so you don't have to bother that much with blending from dark to light etc.
@chriskilue8 жыл бұрын
I think this a good start for colorists in training, as you get to see the areas of light and shadow clearly exposed. This is the first step...then we have to apply the theory of reflected light for a hyperrealism effect ( if that is what the person wants to achieve). I eventually try to experiment with a picture like that in the future. Right now my hands are full with my dual color tutorial in progress, there are a couple of videos there if anyone is interested. The objective is to use only red & blue colors to create purple and red violet shades. I am using one of Peta's drawings (with her permission for that tutorial).

I was just reading up on grayscale coloring when I got a notification about this video. No wonder I love your channel Peta! I do have a request though. I don't have any of Johanna's earlier books, I fell into coloring with Lost Ocean. Would you be able to do a color along, like the duck pond for a picture from Lost Ocean? I would love to follow along with you!
@sugarcandy2438 жыл бұрын
I should mention I don't have any other coloring book either! Pre-ordered Magical Jungle but that's about it. Somehow I love her artwork and haven't found another book that grabs me like hers do.
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
+Shilpa J There's nothing wrong with that. :) Actually I ency you a little. It would be nice to concentrate on and complete one book at a time instead of having a mass of books with a few pictures done in each. But I am also easily bored and have to mix it up with a lot of variety so I guess having lots of books works better for me. AS for a Lost Ocean walk through. I've been considering doing that book as my next one. Not sure yet but it will probably be either Enchanted Forest again or Lost Ocean or Animorphia as these are the most requested books.
@sugarcandy2438 жыл бұрын
+Peta Hewitt Well fingers crossed it's going to be Lost Ocean. I have a pretty orderly mind, so I cannot just have a bunch of books with half done pics. I find it difficult to skip pages in Lost Ocean! Which is why I'm still coloring the intro and publishing pages :D I'm hoping for a color along so I can improve my skill slowly. I would love to be able to get the sort of depth and interest I see in your pictures!

I think her books are best because the images are neat and lines are nice. A lot of other books tend to look so rough like I could even draw them.
@sugarcandy2438 жыл бұрын
+Pippa I couldn't agree more. The attention to detail, the neatness of the lines and even the quality of paper is outstanding! I only wish she would eventually release artist editions of all her books.

Your butterfly is phenomenal (really phenomenal). I've been doing some grayscale but tried the 3 bears from Ruth Sanderson. Big mistake for a novice - fur is soooo hard to do. I bought the full set of Polychromas and also mistake as they seem to get so shiny even with a light hand. I've always used Prisma so I've ordered the full set of FC Goldfaber - hopefully better luck with those. Again - that entire picture is extraordinary.

read the earlier comments. On the reputation of prisma colors to break easily..... I bumped into the perfect solution for this. You just NEED the right sharpener. I went for the KUM automatic long point ....you use one blade to sharpen the wood and the other one for the lead. It was an eyeopener to me and leaves your pencils with this beautiful long crisp points. That way the breaking problem is out of the way. I really fell in love with my Prismas all over again.
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
+patricia dirickx I understand. The path to really appreciating Prisma's is finding the right sharpener. I've heard good things about KUM sharpeners. For me the solution came in the form of a Staedtler Mars 501 180 grinder style sharpener. No more snapped cores. :)

@greatdickens8 жыл бұрын
I know I'm not Peta but I've watched most of her videos and have heard her say polychromos are her favourite pencils. Prismacolor have an unfortunate reputation for cores that often break when you sharpen them. I have both & I reckon Polychromos are a bit nicer to use and don't have the breakage problem

+Shivali Misra Some people like Prisma's , some people like Poly's. I'm a Poly kind of a girl. Prisma's have gorgeous dense rich colour but they don't hold a point for long. I prefer the slightly harder Polychromos as I feel I can layer better with them. It's a personal choice. Prisma's are softer than Poly's. Poly's are better for precision work.

You are very talented; lady that must be said. Can I ask ... At the very end of this wonderful video at 13:40 where I get the opportunity to see your lovely work I see what appears to be, something, like a hatching effect going through the picture. Is this shading that you added as a final touch? I'm curious because it leaves me wondering if there is something within the makeup of the paper itself wich doesn't show until you 'step back' at it and only then see it? Either way, it's definately a delicate touch that really makes this pop ... if that can be at all possible :-)

Hey love so I have been coloring in a ton of greyscale books and in most the paper is just plain computer paper (except Nicoles book above which has better paper), what I have noticed is that if I try to blend it makes black lines all over the image, as if it is spreading the ink everywhere. Do you know a way around this? I want to blend my greyscale images, but when I use a blender pencil this always happens. I did use a white colored pencil which works, but it dilutes the vibrancy of the color too much.
@ShannonCoppers8 жыл бұрын
I just watched a video on this. On another channel. She used a tiny tiny tiny bit of Vaseline on the tip of her pencil. I'm sure if you type in blending greyscale it will pop up.

Caput mortuum is Latin for head of death...death's head. Why anyone would give that name to a colour is beyond me!!!
@PetaHewitt8 жыл бұрын
Yes rather horrid name for a colour. I believe that the name of the pigment comes from the Alchemy interpretation "worthless remains" which is a reference to the Iron Oxide used in the early creation of the pigment. It is rather fun looking at how the name of colours came about.
