By group size alone, that Hornady Custom load shot lights out. I've always had really consistent terminal performance on game from the XTP as well. The 4.25 inch .44 is a good all-around choice for the woods and the hoods, if you have a good holster. This model could be a contender for a one revolver to rule them all, from the bedstand to the trail. Smooth shooting, reliable, and versatile, with class and an added level of potency for those of us who abide by the philosophy of FAFO.

S&W made for a time the Mountain Gun in 44 mag and 45 Long Colt. I had both. These were 4" stainless models with tapered barrels. This Colt reminds me of those old 90s Mt guns. I wish I could say I have had better luck with Colt than I have. The Officers ACP I got rid of because you could not trust the safety. Then I had a 38 Colt reovolver which I loved to look at but it was one with a faulty lock up so it became a general pain. Then I got that King Cobra and that is nice. I have to admit I like that one. I'll definitely be checking these Kodiaks out in Tulsa next time to town though thanks! I found a whole bunch of 44 spcl. and 44 mag ammo the other day looking for 410 ammo and I don't even have a 44 anymore so this was perfect timing!

Disagree. This revolver, and all in this category, were originally designed to be go anywhere, do anything field pieces. Capable of any field task for an outdoorsman, easy to carry in a cartridge both capable and versatile beyond most. The inventor of the 44 magnum cartridge did not envision it a dangerous game cartridge and carried a 4" M29 on his ranch for everyday use from pests, to hunting, foraging, and protection. This revolver will excel in the same role today.

@@theshuzyou should carry both. Look up "Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska". It's an interesting study and an interesting read. Spray is about 92% effective by the numbers, so there is a real discussion to be had about which is more effective. The real deciding factor would be individual proficiency with both spray and firearms. Standing at 7 yards and shooting a static paper target twice a year isn't training. But now I'm rambling on. My point would be this: carry BOTH and become proficient with BOTH.

Don’t forget the big blade knife and the trigger guard lanyard. Because terrain differs on the move and weather conditions can change quickly. missteps and stumbles can have unexpected results. this is why it’s prudent to have some experience of discharging a firearm while lying on your back because natural predators won’t be giving you time to get back on your feet!

Justin, great job on the Colt Kodiak review. Really appreciate the effort you put into shooting 200 rounds of .44 Magnum and sharing your thoughts. That’s a lot of heavy recoil for one day, and your honest take on how it affects the wrists is exactly the kind of insight people need. If I’m choosing a carry gun for hiking in bear country, though, I’d personally go with the Ruger Alaskan-either the .44 Magnum or even better, the .454 Casull. The shorter 2.5-inch barrel makes it much more practical to carry on the hip without sacrificing the firepower needed for big predators. I got my Anaconda back in 1994, just a suggestion, when shooting with 2 hands and single action, try hammering back with your 'off-hand' this way you are not repositioning your grip every time you hammer back. I was taught this by a Camp Perry Champion back when I first got it, he was right, my accuracy improved.
@embreejaАй бұрын
Absolutely right. I have been shooting for over 50 years. The grip for a semi is totally different from a wheel gun. For the revolvers, I always wrap my left thumb behind the hammer and use it to cock the hammer. My grip never changes. As I am getting older, my grip is not what it used to be, but it still works. The 44 is my favorite gun --- I have 5 S&W's in the 44 (the latest is a Model 69 --- five shooter and lighter --- it is not as much fun to shoot as my other 29's and 629's). My only Colt wheel gun is an older Python (was my dad's --- he got it from a Hells Angel that he hired to do 'guard duty' for him in the 70's in Pasadena Ca). It is very nice and the trigger is great --- but so are the Smiths. There is absolutely no sound quite as nice as a revolver as it is being cocked single action (well, maybe a pump shotgun).....
