Don, thanks for this reaction video to my favourite Colter Wall song. And thanks for your great channel. Here is my take of the historical context of the song. I think it’s set in the late 1880’s. Henry is a Canadian outlaw born in Bald Butte (the highest point in the Cypress Hills now a Saskatchewan Provincial Park) Henry’s ‘Berta stud (from Alberta) broken south along the Alberta southern border of Montana (the Montana line). Henry robs Canadian Pacific trains as a loner with no one to “go his bail”. Henry falls in with some Ex-Confederate Soldiers who come up into probably Alberta to sell moonshine to First Nations (Indians). Historically, American moonshiners came up into Alberta back then to sell alcohol to Indians - think “Fort Whoop Up” (a real whiskey fort back then). The NorthWest Mounted Police the precursors the the RCMP (whom we meet in Colter’s 13 Silver Dollars) were created by the Canadian Government to deal with whiskey sellers and exert Canadian sovereignty. Henry’s rifle which “shares his name” was a “Henry Rifle” a famous multiple shot rifle. Henry gets drunk and jumped by the Confederates, looses his horse/rifle tracks them down where things end badly for Henry. Wapiti River is a real river. Colter’s Bald Butte is a great song with historical accuracy. Thanks for your reaction video Larry

Really appreciate you taking the time to educate us more southern-born folk that may not know the places and names up there. I do own one of the famous Green River knives that were shipped up there to trade with First Nation trappers. Probably the best knife I own next to my Case Cutlery collection.

Bald Butte is the highest point in the Centre Block of the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. It's in Saskatchewan where Colter is from.

Colter may not be for everyone... but neither is the incessant winds of a black prairie summer...the grit and dust raised up so violently it'll sandblast the freckles right off your face. Nope, pocket-knifing sandy loam from between your teeth ain't a grin everyone will appreciate. To some, Colter may sound something akin to the song of an old black crow but to me, it just sounds like home. If you haven't ever been to one of the annual Round-ups and experienced some cowboy poetry, I highly recommend it. They usually get going in April and it sure beats listening to the hipsters in Starbucks! Here's a link from a guy down in the Big Bend area where we used to live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZzKmmeFr5ecZtU

Yup, CP Canadian Pacific. Bald Butte is the highest lookout point in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, that straddles Saskatchewan and Alberta. I need to visit there. The pics are gorgeous.

This song tells such a great story. Man, the whole time it’s just drawing pictures in your head. The amount of talent colter has in his art is astounding. A lot of people don’t like his voice, I personally love it. And i love his stage presence, and his true roots to western music, and all of the modern creativity he puts into it. What a masterpiece of a song.

Bob Fudge is an old Ian Tyson song and Colter makes you want to move to Montana. And Original 16 beer is damn good. An old Molson brewery that the workers that got laid off bought it and kept it going.

Pictures of Bald Butte, I needed to see it. It is indeed loafty and high cherylhill.net/blog/2019/06/24/bald-butte/ Edit: I think the line that goes like "he left the day Richmond fell" means he was in the confederate army and ran away to become an outlaw when the Confederacy thankfully fell

You should react to "Natural Forces" by Lyle Lovett, one of the better western style country songs in ages. Also I'd be remiss if I didn't take the opportunity recommend Jason Isbell's "Stockholm" and "Children of Children" and Drive by Truckers "Goode's Field road (alt version)", "Bulldozers and Dirt", "Birthday Boy", "Cottonseed" and "First Air of Autumn"
