This is a song about Blues singer Robert Johnson. Legend has it while trying to become a blues singer and wasn’t very good… he disappeared for awhile and when he returned he was playing like they never heard before. It is believed he sold his soul to the devil to become a better musician. He would ultimately die at the age of 27 after being poisoned by the husband of his mistress.

Facts like when u sign a contract with the big records companies they were nice expensive suits and if you don’t read all the contracts and u sign u basically sign yourself away to them and got to do whatever they want or you won’t get money that u need to feed and take care of your family also most of the contracts say u can’t say like if u won a award u can’t say Jesus is king or Jesus is god or like thank you Jesus Christ the one and only savior also like I’d like to thank the messiah Jesus Christ most u can’t say thoes thing cuz most big record labels are owed by Jewish people and they hate the fact people worship and love Jesus Christ most don’t care but the big jewish executives lowkey hate that so much that the will fine them for breach of contract and find them a certain amount of money and then if you don’t got the money cuz you breached your contract so I don’t get paid for that show or for winning that award so they give you a loan that u got to pay but and sooner than later you are in debt to them a lot of money so when u do shows or get sponsors or stuff like that they either take it all or a bit depending on what you are in debt to them 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ smh is some bs

I think the meaning behind the song is he sold his soul to the devil to learn to play. The story goes back to the 1920s- 1930’s when the legendary blues player Robert Johnson from Mississippi aspired to be the best guitar player ever, from most peoples accounts he was only an average player at best. Supposedly he disappeared for a time and when he returned he was great, stories started to circulate that he sold his soul to the devil to be great. Some say he learned from other great musicians of the delta, some say he sold his soul to the devil 🤷🏼♂️ He first recorded in 1936 and 1937 and he died in 1938 at the age of 27, I believe he is the first inductee in the “27” club as far as musicians go
@chaselonnergan3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty straightforward. He sold his soul to the Devil for the ability to play the guitar well, and now he regrets it.

Also I love your mention to the differences in religious values at the end, as a man of faith it frustrates me when Christianity get put into a single bracket and people think their perfect for their beliefs whatever they are, we are human, we fuck up, we aren't all the same and we gotta make good with what God gave us and what we chose to put in our hands

This song is a representation of an old time blues player that sold his soul so he could play and perform, I forget the name of the singer but this is a story of how he met the devil at the crossroads in the south to sell his soul, love the reactions

Great video man. Colter Wall is definitely one of the best up and coming country artists bringing back that original country sound. If you decide to check him out again his songs Bald Butte and Bob Fudge are great ones to check out. Also, I'm pretty sure this song is a take on the story of Robert Johnson. He was one of the first blues players and the story goes that he met the devil and sold him his soul in return for guitar lessons.

Glad you like this guy. He’s from my neck of the wood in Saskatchewan....with the same last name as my maiden name. No, we’re related...I don’t think😜 But aside from that, his dad is a politician. Colter isn’t a huge fan of politics so the Devil could be someone in a large position of power that makes empty and conditional promises. So, on the surface, it’s just some guy selling his soul for greatness (ironically what a lot of Hollywood stars do), but underneath, it could be more personal.

How I perceived it was, “the suit and tie” resembles how the devil makes temptation look handsome and how us as humans fall victim to temptation because we don’t say this is bad im going to do it, we convince ourselves that it’s good when in fact that suit and tie is very deceiving
