So i always kinda root for the kids that graduated around the same year as me, 20o5. Ernie Sims was the #1 linebacker, and i don't know if u remember a #1 WR one of those years who went to Florida State, Fred Rouse lol. He was supposed to be the next Randy Moss. Also Ryan Perilooux was the next great dual-threat QB. And the #1 player of my class, "utility player" Derrick Williams who went to Penn State, he was also supposed to be the next great WR.

I know I'm late to this but had to add my 2 cents. You're not wrong on any of this from a Miami fan's perspective. This season was the culmination of fears we'd seen begin in '03 and '04. We knew we still had some dudes, but Coker was just doing absolutely nothing with them. It also just so happened that I graduated high school and shipped off to boot camp that November. That LSU Peach Bowl game was my reintroduction to society on a cold snowy night in Great Lakes. It really symbolized the end of my childhood. Things were going to be different now and they were going to be hard.

I remember after Butch Davis left, the U considered hiring Barry Alvarez from Wisconsin since Donna Shalala, who was the school president at the time, had previously been Wisconsin's president and was friends with him. Word got out and the players wanted Coker, so they backed down and hired him. Short term, he was the right guy for that particular group. Long term, he wasn't the right guy.

Miami and Florida State were the SEC before the SEC became the “SEC”. The SEC in the early 2000s was somewhat down. Spurrior left Florida, Alabama was dealing with major recruiting violations, Georgia was somewhat down after the Jim Donnan years

Lary coker crashed the porsche. And the school was stuck in a time warp and stopped investing and caring about the team. College football left miami behind when the admin thought it was still 2001. It was a collective fail by the university to let football slip to the backburner while the rest if college football continued to advance and evolve. It wasnt till 2022 when they realized their massive failure and began caring about football again and its starting to show some results from their investment into the program. Cant wait to read this again in the future and see how that investment turned out. Good or bad.

You should’ve mentioned Bobby Bowden. How people viewed these two teams was largely driven by coach Bowden. Coach Bowden will always have a special place in the hearts of any UM fan who was there during those days.

The end of Florida State came when they started losing assistants, most notably Chuck Amato. When Chuck went to NC State he squashed all the bullying the Noles were doing in the ACC. Up until that point, they were stomping on everybody’s logo. I’m not even sure that anyone was paying attention to that, but Chuck KNEW that’s what they were doing and made sure his players put a stop to it. He effectively took FSU’s swag, and they never got it back!!!

As an FSU fan those Jeff Bowden 2000 teams on offense were brutal. I remember this game and how horrible it was but we were so desperate for a win I took it. And there was a lot of laughs Miami lost on a failed FG. Also I remember that Miami LSU game and agree it was the end. Not only did they lose the fight on the field but lost the fight in the tunnel after the game. One suggestion if you want a truly brutally bad rivaly game. The 2011 FSU\UF game. Xavier Lee was supposed to be next Michael Vick, he graduated around same time as me, 2005. I think 04 or 06, Lee was the #1 dual-threat QB in high school, i was hyped to watch him play at Florida State, but Drew Weatherford was always the starter over him. Xavier Lee barely played, and i think there was like a month in his RD sophmore season where he played well and was a starter. But he couldn't maintian any consistency

Check out the 1992 Cotton Bowl between FSU and Texas A&M if you want to see an atrocious game. The teams combined for more turnovers (13) than points (12, FSU won 10-2). Despite the combined 13 turnovers, the teams still managed to punt a combined 17 times, and neither team managed to eclipse 100 yards through the air.

My first Miami (fl) v FSU game was courtesy of free tickets i got from burger king just for buying a whopper. I also, by the way, got a bright orange windbreaker that was probably highly flamable. In other words, i have seen a lot when it comes to this series. From 1980 and Jim Burt saving the game against two time orange bowl participant FSU to 2003 (1995-1999 being the lopsided exceptions given the dennis erickson ncaa penalties imposed on Butch Davis), this really was as compelling a series as possible on the national level.

Great video. I'm actually a fan of both teams and I forgot how bad that game was. Both teams had some talent but not experience and went on to play much better the rest of the season. As for Miami, not only did they lose to LSU in the Peach Bowl, but they started a fight in the tunnel (some genius had both teams sharing the same tunnel to get to their lockerrooms) and also lost the fight! As for Mussberger's perviness, the girl he ogled is Jenn Sterger who went on to become semi famous as well as infamous for an incident involving Brett Favre when she was the Jets sideline reporter. As far as this game being the impetus for the demise of both programs, well it depends what you mean. This game didn't cause that. But it probably coincided with it. Miami has not gotten back to the same level since, for a variety of reasons, including the rising of UF and then the resurgence of FSU. FSU did win a Natty in 2013, and played for one in 2014. FSU won 10 games last year and is the favorite to win the ACC. FSU has a legit Heisman candidate and is a darkhorse for the natty. FSU still has the most ACC championships, and Miami has none. One criticism - Gary Danielson didn't just have a random shout out. He was alluding to Michigan's Chris Webber who famously called a timeout that didn't exist to lose the 1993 basketball national championship to Duke. I'll give you a pass because you were so young.

Even if you are not doing this series anymore, may I present the 1994 Freedom Bowl between my Arizona Wildcats and Utah Running Utes. It should have been a good game since these two schools had good beef between them and history when Arizona played in the WAC. But it was a dud at 16-13. What makes this game terrible is that Arizona was picked to win the title by Sports Illustrated. They went 8-3 but were still respectable. They completely dominated Utah, who maybe had 80 yards of offense. And they still lost. What makes it even worse is that the game was in Anaheim, and the two teams couldn’t even half full the stadium. This game was so bad it ended the Freedom Bowl in an era where there were not too many bowl games. Arizona lost to two WAC schools that year, which was unheard of at the time by PAC-10 schools. Anyway, the game is on KZbin, and you can go ahead and make fun of Dan White’s throwing motion and Ontiwaun Carter’s lack of field vision.

Miami fan here. Many things went wrong for Miami. Starting from Butch leaving for... the Browns of all people. Then, the steady decline under Coker. Then, sactions. Then, third rate coaches. Then, leaving the Orange Bowl, making de facto play all games on the road. Then... then... NIL and transfer portal came, and maybe, just maybe, the Canes can be back mobilizing the big money from Miami. The 2004 game was unbearable to watch as a FSU fan. The defense was gassed in the overtime. However, no one game, especially in 2005 was the reason the rivalry is no longer nationally relevant. That is for both teams to create.

Larry Coker killed Miami more than anyone else-Coker inherited a roster full of future All Stars and NfL Pros from Butch Davis. By 2005 Coker had long since ran out of Butch's players anymore important the assistant coaches. The next season 2006 the wheels came off and except for a spark here and there the dynasty was done. Today all hope lies with Mario Cristobal.
