One week into the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at Columbia University, students called a press conference on the campus lawn in front of the President’s House to address accusations in the media that the protests are antisemitic. Students say the attacks pure slander meant to distract from the real objectives of their movement: to bring the world’s attention to the genocide in Gaza and to make Columbia divesting from Israel inevitable.

We were in Columbia campus visiting as parents on April 21st, to tell the truth those kids were peaceful there were no hateful or antisemitic rhetoric, we spent whole day in campus we haven’t felt unsafe, intact I was worried about the safety those kids who were protesting inside the campus, some people outside the campus gate yelling and cursing to them and trying to aggravate them… trying to escalate the situation…

I am an old Scottish bloke who has no religion (or ndeed a belief in any god) but these are people that make me see religion in a much better light. My beliefs are simple. Folks are good or bad. How one treats others, especially those who are different to oneself shows up whether a person is good or bad. Religion (or lack thereof), gender, sexuality, colour, race etc has no bearing on whether one is good or bad. It is simply how one treats others. I see good in these folks.
