From 'The Murder of a Rockstar' - Columbo investigates the death of a rock singer and soon clashes with her former lover, a smooth defence lawyer. As the pair pit their wits against each other, it soon becomes apparent that the victim was threatening to reveal some of the lawyer's shadier dealings.

They do what he tells em to do, crazy or not - take a pic of these corks? Done! c) he still does wacky stuff - what’s this radio cost? Did she do that song? They still respect him and of course - he is the boss in the scene!

Columbo aged better than most tv characters. Brilliance and excentricity still intact. Even tho the years rolled past, and the world around him changed, he remained columbo. *Edit* Can you imagine paying $400-500 for a CD player radio? *I love watching old shows and movies for little things like that.

I grew up in the boom box era and $400-$500 would have been too high a price. (Boom box was the name given to that type of stereo equipment at the time.) A first-rate boom box, featuring all the bells and whistles could be had for about $200-$300. I remember buying such a boom box for about $200 from the Sharper Image. It lasted for years, and I ended up donating it while still in perfect working order.

@@jamesfeldman4234 I was just going to say this. In 1991 I bought my first boom box with dual cassette, cd, am/fm, detachable speakers, rca inputs, and bass boost for $180 at Target. And it was twice as big as that one. What would be really cool is if someone could scan the barcode sticker on the back of the one in the clip and see where it came from.

As this sequence demonstrates, when Columbo arrives at the scene where the deceased is found, he immediately exercises professional skepticism and is alert to anomalies to ordinary expectations, while others ignore them or think them insignificant. In this case, the scene was staged, so those anomalies are very significant. While many a detective is perfectly happy to close-out a case, buying into the staged scene (and often doing so even when they recognize that anomalies are present), Columbo never does this, and that's one of things we love about him and the show.

Compare this scene to old NBC columbos. NBC: Columbo wanders in, looks under a couch, sneezes, farts, makes funny faces, asks some lackey for a coffee. The other cops look at him like he's a lunatic. But he finds the important piece of evidence that recurs later. ABC: Columbo walks in like any rando TV detective. "Whaddya got, Sergeant?" Three minutes of boring TV cop show exposition. Finds the important piece of evidence and it shows in 83 closeups on the screen for five minutes straight to hit the audience over the head.

I just love how Columbo manages to look like an idiot and dumbfounds people with the way he investigates homicides. He looks at things a different way and not only confounds ordinary people, but police officers too! Now, with the suspects, he usually can tell who the suspect is when they seem to be able to keep up with him when doing these investigations, they either get involved and or annoyed and he gets them going, and then sets them up in a trap for them to fall into every time! Genius plots!

The point isn't that there is "no possibility" of a reasonable explanation. The point is that something is suspicious. If Columbo sees enough of these "little things", he then builds a case. Lastly, he finds evidence to support his theories. It's not a perfect science, but luckily for us viewers, the killers always confess on the show when Columbo presents the "smoking gun." (Of course, in reality, the primary suspect would just keep quiet, talk only through a lawyer, and often win the trial despite being completely guilty).

Columbo has always been my favorite. It’s too bad when it started in the 50’s like this one it was less than 10 minutes long for the whole show. They leave out a lot of details. Later they were as long as half an hour which was a great improvement. The TV had just been invented in the 50’s so the TV sets were a lot smaller so they couldn’t handle longer shows

Columbo didn't exist in the 50s. First pilot episode was 1968 and the second pilot was 1971, then they started producing shows from then on.

Having watched this episode right now, I think she got, what she deserved. No need to feel sorry for her
