I like the episode with Robert Foxworth as Frank Brailie (Grand Deceptions) where Columbo tells him that he knew that Brailie was the murderer right from the start.....Brailie was too arrogant a man to clean up mud from a floor. That's what Bailie was doing when Columbo first met him. Love the crumpled genius and the way he takes some people down a peg or three.

Yes that one always gets me! Only in soaps, and not real life, do people come home then open their front doors and shout the name of the people living there! Have you ever done it? I certainly haven't and for good reason. Writers used to use it in order to help name characters who were just about to appear. I write and wouldn't use it as its so cheesy; there are more subtle ways to name characters!

I bet he was offered promotion to Captain many a time, but he preferred being a 'gumshoe' (pun very much intended ...) working the streets as a homicide detective; I also bet there was a quiet competition amongst whom would be the next sergeant working under him, as he was the detective's detective ... a walking masterclass in piecing innocuous pieces of evidence that entraps the villain every time, like a slow closing steel trap, until it's too late ... R.I.P Mr Faulk ... you were to Colombo what James Earl Jones is to Darth Vader; Peter Cullen is to Optimus Prime; and Kevin Conroy was (may he too, rest in peace) to Batman: all _sine qua non_ (without which, not) of their respective rôles: many imitations, no emulations ...

@@Genevieve111 seriously. If a movie showed a step-by-step sequence of a character's actions like in real life, that movie would last for 24 hrs. And it's not theater either. Another I enjoyed was about the dentist who applied slow poison to his victim via some dental work. The other two involved women. Yes, bite marks are being used to identify criminals, it seems very unlikely though that a piece of gum compared to a piece of cheese (even if it is fine Reggiano). I've been watching a lot of Monk clips lately (it was one of my favorite shows when it was on TV) and I think that's why KZbin started suggesting Columbo. I recognized Stanley at 4:10 and immediately paused to look up his filmography and confirm because I didn't expect him to speak. Sadly, he passed away in 2008 at age 65.

I've been a fan of Patrick McGoohan ever since I saw the British tv series Danger Man, later called Secret Agent Man in America. His character, John Drake, always won the day using his wits, not bullets. In fact it's said he turned down the role of James Bond because he thought the character too violent. His portrayal of King Edward I in the movie Braveheart was the best thing about the film. Apparently he and Falk got along so well that McGoohan ended up writing a couple of the Columbo scripts.

I so wanted a sequel to this episode with the court hearing where the judge throws out the chewing gum because it was retrieved from the office trash can without a warrant. Then a good lawyer could get the cheese from the murder scene also tossed when it's discovered Columbo took the rest of the cheese home and ate it. Any confession thrown out as fruit of the poisonous tree. No admissible evidence so the case is dismissed.

The gum might be admissible, if he was invited to the office and trash is generally not accepted to carry an expectation of privacy. But yeah, in general the whole thing won't hold up
@treyatkinson7564

Trash has been found to be admissible, since the disposed item is no longer considered to be private property. The gum well could've been a ruse to gain a confession. As well, with the phrase, "stick around" be could be seen as an invited guest.

For me, Columbo is the all-time best detective. I was brought up in England, but was never a Sherlock Holmes fan. To me, he resembled many of the Greek philosophers who thought that the world's problems could be solved by sitting down and thinking, without real-world testing. I preferred G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown, who had a similar style to Columbo.

What do you mean? Sherlock was always out in the field. He had many hideouts, sources, and alter egos that he used in his work. he real world tested too, in the story of Black Peter, he speared a pig to replicate a murder, in The Devil's Foot, he burned a powder to see what effects it had had on its victims...I could go on and on! He did sit and think, but that was when it was a "three pipe problem" 😊

Of course, bite marks on chewing gum would manifest in a completely different manner from bite marks on a piece of cheese. The remaining piece of cheese had not been bitten, so you can only deduce at the width and convexity of the teeth by that piece of cheese. Notwithstanding the fact that you chew gum with your molars, but that piece of cheese had been nibbled on by the the incisors.

Columbo mentions this scene in a later episode "Columbo Goes to College": "Well, recently I was in an attorney's office and he wasn't there. And it turns out that the secretary was in the ladies' room. So I took advantage of this moment of privacy to go into his inner office and go through his wastepaper basket. I was looking for a piece of gum. And I found it. And I wanted to match the bite marks in that piece of gum with the bite marks on a piece of cheese that I found at the scene of the crime."
