Took my mast down last year and just had to re-rig a bunch of stuff. Found this video very helpful.

That's one beautiful sailboat!

Looking forward to launching my recently purchased ‘85 Mistral 16 foot closed cabin sailboat. OUR FIRST BOAT! About the same dimensions as the Legacy here. A little more work than putting a motorboat in huh? I’ll certainly need an experienced captain to help me out the first few times with all the rigging since I haven’t sailed in over 30 years. I think most people leave sailboats at a marina seeing they’re more trouble to get ready.

I had one some years ago and it was very easy to launch and sail....

Add a jack line to the jib to pull down the sail from the cockpit.

I want to learn how to sail so badly! I have my eye on a used 80's West Wight Potter 15'. Unfortunately it seems like I'll need to take the time to learn some knots and all of the lingo. All of these sailboat terms ur using, i have no idea what ur talking about. Its a different language lol.

Once you learn you won't regret it. I used to sail both for fun and competitively when I was a youngster, and some 50 years later I so miss it that I'm pining for a sailboat again that I can cruise around in just for the joy of propelling through the water through the power of wind. There's nothing in the world like it. It's both exhilarating and cathartic. And fun as hell when you've got friends and/or family as crewmembers who share your enthusiasm for sailing.

@@briane173 Then just do it. I learned how to sail by mooching rides on friends boats. The first time the boom thwacks you in the noggin you will never forget what "ready about -hard-alee" means or what a boom is. After a while of getting "cleatis foot" you will learn. And enjoy.

@@ThePrader That is indeed why they call it a "boom," I'm convinced. I remember my dad rented a Catalina 27 for a daysail in San Diego and a couple friends of his and I went out, and by that time you know it had been 20 or so years before I'd been on our last boat, which was a Columbia 50 -- never had to worry about hitting a boom with my head on *_that_* thing. But you kinda forget about that stuff after a couple decades, and I swear to god every time we tacked or jibed I'd get smacked in the back of the head with the damned boom on the Catalina -- sitting down in the cockpit for godsake! So yeah you never forget, but things seem a lot smaller when you get older -- like clearance between boom and cockpit.

Seems like a lot of work to set up.

If you're going to sail a small trailerable boat it does take some time to rig and launch it. Provides an incentive to get out on the water and stay out for the whole day -- because UN-rigging and loading the boat on the trailer takes just as long. There are advantages and disadvantages to both (trailerable and permamently docked). If you've got the $ to blow it's certainly less time-consuming and less effort to get underway on a boat that is permanently in the water. But the elements are tough on a boat and slip rentals and club memberships can suck up a lot of money. Trailerable affords some protection from the elements, and allows one to avoid the costs of slip or mooring rental and added maintenance costs; but be prepared to spend some time just getting the boat in the water and rigged for a sail.

Brian E I thought your boats are supposed to be easy to rig and everything. Isn't that what the Mastendr system is all about?
@briane1736 жыл бұрын
If we're grading on a curve the Mastendr system makes it VERY simple. But it doesn't eliminate the need for stepping a mast; you'll never get away from that trailing a boat. But Mastendr does allow for keeping running rigging up and the boom attached, which saves a ton of time.

Brian E I do plan on leaving the boat in the water. Does the new boat come with most rigging done?
@briane1736 жыл бұрын
Oh I have no idea. I'm not the manufacturer and I don't own one. But I'm assuming you would be the one to install standing and running rigging. All the pieces are there, and once you've rigged it you can leave it alone.
