Look at their derpy little legs and tiny' lil chicken feet. Ain't these weapons of war adorable? Now with the clampy legs even derps like Lathrix can build functioning self balancing walkers WITHOUT the need of thrusters or other movement types for balance as It hops along happily to battle!

I got name-dropped, wooo! 🥳 But I definitely haven't made a walker like this before, my own clampy-foot experiments didn't get nearly such good results as this. The walkers I've made before were essentially thrustercraft in disguise. But you've made delicious helpful walker bread, Lathrix, and that'll help me a lot! Cheers! Hope life improves all around for you soon.👍

Honestly, I feel like a super cheap two-legged walker that's basically a walking ammo box with a simple weapon or two like an autocannon with effectively no armour might be scarily effective. They tank shots for your bigger targets, and they can dish out a bit of damage if allowed to. Don't underestimate assault cannons!

There's barely any cost associated with the movement, which is usually the biggest cost from what I've found that makes them not great, you've gotta make a full engine, or steam setup, or whatever, every single tank / ship. But with a walker, horde tactics are super easy as it's basicaly just the cost of the gun, which you were going to pay for whether it was on a giant supertank or on a mini little shitstain.

It used to be that engines were harder to make and had a higher skill ceiling, but now they're bad but easy to make, so it's just dumbing the game down too. Also they removed DIrect input Feed APS which was fun, for no purpose whatsoever, despite it being a sandbox game in which the impractical should be possible.

i've walked in my room trying to understand how walk cycles makes you move forward, and i think you got it reversed : the front leg "extend" to go "grab" the floor further away, and the back leg detaches to the ground to become the front leg that extends to grab forward. Your mech extend when it's in the back, but it should also extend when it's it's forward i think ! plus it's make it more stable since it would means having 2 legs on the ground when "standing idle" during the walk cycles, thus making it more stable and more damage resilient ? i think ! Also it would maybe make it very stable, so you could make the walk cycle faster to make them go faster !

Yup the piston being fully retracted at the front of the arc is causing it to have no effect for about 30% of the swing back. It needs to "on the swing back" extend, grab ground, go all the way back, retract, swing forward fully, repeat

If you have 4 legs, you should extend the legs already at the point they're halfway to the most forward position. That way it'll have 4 points of contact with the ground most of the time and you won't need PID's for stability. Another idea would be a spider-like build, with legs moving sideways instead of just forwards and backwards. Have the legs facing down on pistons on the extremes of the legs and only go down (a little bit) when the legs is moving backwards. Also it would be very very cool to see! Otherwise, so happy to see some more FtD content c:

Hey lathrix, i might have an idea to improve the speed of them a bit. so basically instead of emulating the walkcycel you chose, you maybe could go with: move back foot/feet forward -> extend (the now) front foot/feet piston/s -> clamp down front foot/feet -> undo (the now) back foot/feet clamps -> retract back foot/feet piston/s -> repeat with that you should move more forward than, with your current cycel. but it could also be harder to program it to do so. also to stream line it you could tell the pistons to do the extension&retraction simultaniously. but that would give the walker a up and down movement while that is great for evasion i dont know so much for firing accuret shots. although you could just install a piston/s buffer/absorber that cancels that out. then again it would also be cute/hillarious to see a walker with a body/butt that moves up&down while walking and a head/weapons platform thats none plussed connected to that. mind you, i dont know how complecated that would be to implement. of either of those two ideas at least the walk cycel would improve speed a bit, if im correct or at least improve distance travelled with each cycle *edit spelling, point&comma (just as info english isnt my mother/first language so srry if im hard to understand)

For smoother, more natural movement you could use two spinblocks for the hip joint with one offset and connected to the other by a 1,2,3,4 *1 block. Set parent block to constant rotation in X direction, and the child block to anti-x direction, also constant rotation, input is drive command forward or backward. This way you will alleviate a lot of the jerkiness that comes from having one spinblock function as an entire hip joint. Your hips will have authority in all three axes, so ideally you want to give your constructs the same benefit, where able. This also helps with control by giving you more options to control erratic behavior.

I haven't had FtD for long, so I am still learning, however I've been wanting to try and recreate some craft from of your Airships: Conquer the Skies series such as the Derp Dart and Derp Tank, etc. But if you'd like ideas for a walker type, maybe a Chaos Juggernaught, even though I know it's not really a walker and more of a soldier in a suit. You could maybe even do some Sentinels adorned with Chaos decorations and paint schemes. As far as Steampunk goes, I would definitely look inwards toward Airships or Victorian-era mixed with World War I.

I feel like you may be able to get smoother movement if you have the piston extend while the leg is forward, retract partially as it moves toward the center, then extend until it's all the way back, and then of course retract it all the way up so that it can take the next step. With the way I described it, if you can manage to get the timings right, it should eliminate the up and down movement of the mech and thus also lessen the swaying.

If you switch the piston extensions so that they are extended when the foot is raised and retracted when they are lowered, it might improve your stability.

some shields and armor pen and you have spammable units, the thing i find great with the walkers is that if you edit the combat patern you can dodge most cram and heavy fire!! its sharp turning is a true menace on the battlefield B)

If you want to improve the walk cycle, i think a 4 step program would work better: 1. Right leg forward, left backwards 2. Righ piston down, left up 3. Left leg forward, right backwards 4. Left piston down, right up

I think the optimal set up would be: piston has to be set up so that it's maximum extension is when the leg is straight down. And only the leg going back would extend and only slightly. Using your set up, it would take some trial and error but if the leg started going backwards at 4, and reached the back angle at 6, then it would extend from 4 to 5 and retract from 5 to 6. If you can get it to do that, the wheel is unnecessary. EDIT: I just read the comments and realised everyone is backseat designing lol. Sorry.

Hmm. Very good first design, although I can definitely see some opportunities for improvement. Not being able to tinker with it in-game, I think two main design principles will serve you well for this base model: first, a single "step" should begin and end with all legs touching the ground and all pistons fully extended (as opposed to the extended-leg-on-ground, retracted-leg-in-air "step" it currently has), and second, the pistons on the legs in the air mid-stride should fully retract for maximum clearance then extend for the longest possible gait, while the legs touching the ground should only retract sufficiently to keep the body stable, if at all - keeping them extended will probably get the best stride, and if it stops to shoot the increased bounce shouldn't really matter (alternatively, mount your turrets on their own pistons to counteract the vertical motion). It will definitely take some experimentation with both the breadboard and the specific control options for the new feet, but the final result should be faster, more stable, and much more receptive to scaling up the speed. Turning might be harder, though, so be mindful of that - it may require special commands. Also, my gut feeling is that, if you end up with more than two legs (six would probably work well once you've mastered walking), you'll probably only want to use the new feet for one pair and the old ones for the rest, but that's just speculation on my part. Good luck, can't wait to see a more refined version!

If you make the piston on the forward moving leg retract while moving and extend when stopping, the movement will be a bit smoother. As in, put the "foot" down before the next cycle starts. Might be a use for that bit of movement lag between walk cycles.

A simple idea for twin leg walkers: Arms that swing to counter the torque. Or a spine. Or both. Whichever's easier.

find it funny that the physics of the first 2 legged walker test make sense,it's essentially just a pendulum, because there's constantly a net force of 0 on the tilt of the walker,it's unable to fall over,if the legs were to be going any slower,it would fail

Not sure if you already checked this, but a minor decrease in piston after midpoint would possibly help so that the 4 legger wasn't so thoroughly sitting on 2 legs

I think you need to de-sync the pistons with a gate splitter; one with the leg movement and the other with a 2s delay (half the leg movement timer) marked as 'C' and 'D' to activate the pistons, so you get more movement out of each 'step'.

I like the walker you made, but something occured to me when I saw it moving. If you let the pistons extend whilst the spinblocks aren't moving, it would stop the walker moving backwards at the beginning of each step. Keep up the good work and get better soon.

My first thought was that these vehicles all give off a strong Star Wars feeling. I think that Star Wars has some of the coolest walkers in sci fi because they still look somewhat down to earth. Amazing video and build btw.
