I don't see Coldplay as a band anymore, just as a brand that's latched onto whatever is zeitgeist. It's essentially been a Chris Martin solo project for a while now. Like yourself, I wonder what the band, especially the guitarist, actually 'do'. Perhaps they help carry all Chris' electronic gear or something. I'd love to see them do what REM did with Automatic For The People and surprise everyone with a raw, stripped back album. They'd have to give Jonny his guitar back though.

Why do people think just because Coldplay changed means they’re not Coldplay anymore? People change and it would be extremely hard to write in the same style for years and years when you yourself are not the same anymore.

I totally expect bands to evolve and follow their creativity, just the results vary sometimes in the final quality. Chris Martin is still an amazing artist, just doesn't feel like a full band effort to me
@jw-lk1pe29 күн бұрын
there's almost zero guitar. Has anyone looked into this? Was Buckland in the hospital or something? did they kick him out of the band? I just don't get this album at all. Or the 5 before it for that matter. It's like they are trying to cater to a different audience
@LeoHarrisHeaney29 күн бұрын
@@jw-lk1pe I don’t think they are trying to be anything. I think they are happy with themselves and therefore are writing what they want to. I think it’s missed a lot of people because they’re content with themselves and that doesn’t resonate with most people.
@jw-lk1pe29 күн бұрын
@ whatever the reason/motive is, it's objectively a bad album. Where is Buckland's guitar? Was he even a part of this album?
@LeoHarrisHeaney29 күн бұрын
@@jw-lk1pe that is a fundamentally incorrect thing to say. All music is subjective, just because you don’t like it and bucklands lack of guitar definitely doesn’t mean that is an objective fact. What??

Great review. You summarised how I feel about the album and Coldplays music in recent years. They have become a commercial enterprise, too concerned with being relevant and chasing gen Z. The great moments like ‘All my love’ are bittersweet as they remind you what the album could have been.

I’ve listened to it about 10 times now. I’d say my biggest issue is, it feels very short, and although I love the epic ethereal landscapes, there aren’t many ‘song’ songs here. When iAAM started, that was what I was waiting for, but that song is painfully short too. At the end of the day, I’d say it’s an optimistic emotional experience, more than an album. Blink and you miss it. X&Y was an album. We Pray is the only track I’d skip.

I don’t think Johnny Buckland has been in Coldplay for about five albums. Hang on, neither have Guy Berryman or Will Champion! It’s such a shame. Agree with you they need to try a heavier sound, and at least return to their brilliant sound as if their first two albums Not heard the album yet, hope it’s good but, on the lead single and previous two albums, I think it might be a stinker (Coldplay fan who regards Parachutes and AROBTTH as two of the very best albums of the 21st Century)

Chris Martin also said, I think it was after Ghost Stories or A Head Full of Dreams that Coldplay might only have one album (‘thing’ as he referred to it) before stopping. The stuff since has been dreadfully dire (I’m a big fan of Coldplay). The last album had one amazing song (that 10 minute Pink Floyd style one at the end) but the rest was so sickly bad I’ve not heard anything other than the lead single yet. I’m hoping this one’s a return to their alternative/indie rock sound and style and a return to form. But not expecting anything much at all
@murdockreviewsАй бұрын
@@TedGruberskyI actually don't think that Coldplay will ever return to a more guitar based/indie sound because that is not popular at the moment and won't sell many units of albums, even if fans of old would love that.

@@murdockreviews and I reckon you’re probably right. Such a shame that it’s all about what drives the sales figures or popularity - when this is already a very successful band who’ve made their millions. I gauge albums now by how many songs I add to the band's playlist. After about ten listens of the whole album, including the full double album edition, I'm adding five songs. feelslikeimfallinginlove, We Pray, All My Love, Karate Kid, and IAAM. 5/20. This is actually a pretty strong selection compared to recent albums which had one or zero songs added. The last album I really liked was Ghost Stories.
