On my mission in Tennessee, I at first tried learning more about the Bible so I could prove that the Bible taught our truth. I came to realize that trying to use the Bible instead of the Spirit to convince people was unwise. The Bible was a battleground instead of the intended common ground. So I studied more and taught more from the Book of Mormon and let people decide if they wanted to know more. This lesson was a good reminder to “teach correct principles” rather than trying to force people to see things my way.

Thank you for the football analogy, I know little about football but throwing and catching. But something turned a light on as you spoke about giving and receiving with the spirit as the football is thrown and caught. I am not repeating it well but it is my goal when I teach that they recieve through the spirit what their young minds may not understand completely, I teach Primary but even when I taught the youth SS class it was a major goal. Thanks for putting it into words better than I.

I have so enjoyed these, thank you. I couldn’t help but think, that the world calls it a dimmer switch, as if to say I have enough and would like lees. It should more correctly be called a brighter switch. As with Lehi referring to the fruit of the tree exceeding all whiteness, being most precious to the soul, in opposition to the great and spacious building. Oh that I could always desire the fruit above all, and be willing to receive greater light.

I am a convert to the church. My background was not American Christianity when I joined. I was raised in a home that exposed us to many different Christian churches and let us choose for ourselves. But by the time I came in touch with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I had joined an Eastern religion that was not Christian. When I look at section 49 in the Doctrine and Covenants, I see many doctrines taught by Eastern religions that are corrected and given greater light by the things the Lord revealed in regard to the Shakers. The revelation was meaningful at the time in relation to the Shaker community since they were sincerely trying to live according to the understanding that they had. The revelation was trying to help them to understand the Lord’s ways better, and give them the opportunity to repent and align themselves more fully to the Lord’s ways by accepting the greater light being offered. As we become a worldwide church, I see the application of this section of the doctrine and covenants as being very helpful in helping people in other non-Christian religious communities by giving them light on some important concepts that are out of step with the Lord’s wishes. Each of the major foci Give important understandings that help refute some of the false ideas given by man, or of devils and help clear us to live lives in accordance to the covenant path. I appreciate section 49, not just as a historical jewel, but as a very relevant modern day useful light of clarity with international relevance and application.

I really appreciate what you said about building up without tearing down. I have somewhat been trying to do that by encouraging atheists for rejecting the trinity, and encouraging communists for seeking communal good, and capitalists for seeking freedom. But i need to be better about not tearing down catholics to their faith.

I am in some ways like that young man, with whom you met. I started a 'questions and concerns' list, that was roughly 10 pages, that has, over the last 4-5 years, turned into a 475 page study journal, where I posit the question or concern, and then lay out the doctrine as understood by the church, and then list talks, journal of discourse records and scriptures, as well as my personal understanding, of how it all works together and makes sense. There are still many questions posited in my journal that I have not resolved or found answers to but it has truly helped my internalize the doctrines and teachings of the church and helped me better understand how the church's progression was more of a line upon line process than a guided and directed in all thing, type progression. Mistakes were made in their struggle to understand and implement teachings and commandments, that I and many others were confused about or frustrate by, if it truly is 'God's restored church'. It has been an interesting and enlightening journey to write down impressions and study topics and questions I've had.

I never went to Institute so you are my first Institute teacher. I’m so grateful for your lessons and insights. I’m learning things that I have always had questions about and I’m starting to feel the Spirit again. My dad passed away a few years ago and I have missed his teachings and felt so far away from the Spirit. These lessons are helping me regain my faith in the gospel after having a trial of faith. As a young woman in high school I had a similar “conversion experience” (reference from your lesson approximately time stamp 40:00). I became curious about the gospel and a friend gave me a book of Mormon to read. I can still remember how I felt when I turned to the opening title page and then the pages of the three witnesses. My heart was racing with anticipation, I felt as if I had stumbled across buried treasure, such was my excitement. I began reading 1st Nephi and it was only after my personal study and my own prayer that I came to know the Gospel was true. Before I met with the missionaries my decision was made. I was baptized at 17 and now at 46 my testimony has only grown deeper and more meaningful with time. As a young sister missionary I often held the opinion that as missionaries we are not much more than messengers, we by our own efforts alone cannot change an individual’s heart. Conversion must come from within.

I believe all prospective missionaries of the Lord's Church should hear this message from Bro Halverson regarding how to share the gospel with those of another faith. It would help missionaries understand how to follow Christ's example of teaching with patience and love and allowing the Spirit to work on the listeners' hearts. Then, if the message is rejected, the result is that they did the work they were called to do, and can feel good about that, and the listener made their choice because of the gift of agency. Typically, a good outcome will never be the result of tearing down another's beliefs. Thank you for the wonderful insight!

He built up to a very emotional-filled climax about how they were no longer needed before ending with quietly, “

'Light' is my favorite doctrine. For me it is the gospel. All that comes from God and Christ is light. The gospel is beautiful and light! Added: My grandfather's double cousin was Quaker. Now they do not do anything that puts one in the congregation above another but they do have someone who apparently is a 'leader'. I met he and his wife a couple of times. They radiated light. If they had been in the church they would have been given much responsibility. Of that I have no doubt. I also have no doubt they were where God wanted them to be, doing His work. Now that they are on the other side I know they are continuing to do His work. I also know the day their work was done was a huge day of celebration for them.

You answer these throughout your lessons but to have them easily accessible for someone like me that may come into contact with someone who could greatly benefit from your knowledge in your words (you are amazing in this area) would be priceless in my opinion. Would love to see or hear letter the person wrote to you after all the discussions you had together and what he learned. I bet that would help many as well if possible. I have two grandsons I am helping to raise right now and so need to get up 2 hours early to have enough time to slowly go through the material and take notes and read links to other scriptures or conference talks that are mentioned in the lessons. I am so hooked on the scriptures, THANK YOU for your time. I love the verse by verse format you do.

As an incredibly gifted teacher you are empowering us with the spirit! FYI, my Uncle W. Cleon Skousen, researched why Bishop Partridge was called to repentance. It was because he was failing to give legal deeds (as instructed by the Lord in D&C 20:30) to land assigned to those he felt might not be committed Saints.

So much is actually how to form an understanding, celestial marriage! Start day one in your marriage that your relationship grows brighter and brighter in the Spirit. Praying to know individually and as a couple; striving to overcome some individual customs and some family traditions and what others say makes a good marriage; listening individually to know the Spirit in YOUR marriage and discussing with each other to edify each other with the answers the Spirit gives you individually that you may be ONE as Christ and the Elohim are ONE-an eternal, celestial couple. Making the first marriage the only marriage and not the preparation for a marriage to someone else after you’ve practiced and failed at the first one. This isn’t a game you can afford to lose and then play with another person and hope to win. It has effects on all in your circle and eternity. Satan is very clever at deception and getting you to use his tools in the end to overcome someone else. Grow together by growing and edifying spiritually together: be merciful and forgiving and reason with each other as this scriptural lesson admonishes us to do. Christ wants you both to win and win His promises together; He is always available when you ask humbly for His help and sometimes it involves asking for the Spirit to tell you what to pray about. Christ wants you both win.

I concur with your thoughts that we should all be striving to get it right the first time! But I'm so very grateful for the Gospel of Second Chances. God can take something as horrendous as divorce and make beauty for ashes. I'm so grateful to Heavenly Father for my 2nd marriage. He was our matchmaker!

Yes! Me too! I keep praying you'll do the Old Testament and New Testament years and the little bit you didn't do in the beginning of the Book of Mormon as well so we can go full circle :)
