I told my young daughter that practice makes perfect. She looked at me and said " no, practice makes better". Truth truly does come from the mouth of babes. If we practice each day to become better we will eventually, in the next life find perfection.

I too have prayed for the Lord to teach me while I sleep. I relate very much to that elder in many ways. I work hard, but never seem to have enough time. This is exactly why I have prayed for this blessing. I can also testify that the Lord has taught me in my sleep. He knows I give it my all and He blesses me for it. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us!

I had a similar experience recently not having near enough time to keep up with work, family and urgent projects. I wasn't even sure how to complete a.project let alone have tome to do it, I had a constant prayer to somehow fit it all in and unexpectedly in my dreams I was shown exactly how to do it so it would work. I was shown just enough for how far I could get that next day, still not sure how it would be possible to finish another aspect of the project needed to complete it. After finishing what I was shown in that dream, that next night I was shown the rest. It was beyond my own ability to design. Heavenly Father is so merciful and giving and patient. I stand all amazed. I've periodically been taught as needed in my dreams for years when life gets a little too busy. Always while doing all I can keep up with as best I can and usually when at least a portion of my tasks are aimed to serve.

I understand completely about the importance of being able to ask the right questions. Roughly 30 years ago when I taught seminary our regional leader was great at that. It helps students discover things and they remember them better. Elder Bednar is an expert at that. In a training video I watched he said "What have you heard tonight that has not been said? " It was powerful to me. I hope you continue these lessons. I love the insight I receive as I listen.

My brother, who had failed every language class he’d taken in high school, was called to serve a mission in Japan in 1968, before there was any language training. He flew to Tokyo after two days in the Mission Home in SLC for 2 1/2 years. He woke up every morning for six months at 4:30 for two hours of study before his companion woke up. He learned the language beautifully. We all knew his work met the gift of tongue fir a miraculous result.

I was in a ward for a couple of years before my husband started going to church with me that took pride in being beautifully organized, staffed, on top of any instructions that came down from the stake or Church, you name it. However, from the beginning, no one ever greeted me or sat next to me at any meeting unless I greeted them first or sat down next to them. I have never felt more unwelcome. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have kept going had I not been firmly grounded in the Church and had a Primary class to teach.

I was in that next generation that did not learn the 6 discussions that Elder Brown and Smith gave. We had 8 discussions that we still had to know by heart. But we had some flexibility of what we taught and when. I use to get into trouble all the time on my mission for teaching what the investigator needed, not just the words of the discussions. Amazing how the church went into Come Follow Me that gives that flexibility to teach by the spirit. Keep up the good work.

Loved the discussion about the gifts of the spirit and how they complement each other without hierarchy. I have often appreciated the gift of knowing what questions to ask as it applies to Jared and his brother. Jared was a righteous man and a prophet too, but he knew his strength was to know what to ask and Mahonri Moriancumer had the gift of getting answers to questions. Both are necessary. I think we can also look within our family to see what spiritual gifts we collectively hold. These can be used to bless the lives of the family, the ward family, a church organization, etc. Then when a situation happens, we might ask what spiritual gift would be necessary in this situation. Or we might ask “What spiritual gift might I need to conquer this trial and what spiritual gift might I ask for or seek after?”

Oh, Brother Halverson! I love love love the questions of others. It is truly how my mind connects all the dots of information within. I have experienced the ability to answer someone’s question with information and knowledge I could have never pulled out myself and later having that same question (or something similar) asked and there was nothing I had to add. Several years ago I FEASTED upon the word to the point I would wake up reciting paragraphs and pages of the books I had been studying. I knew I’d never be able to remember all that I was learning and that was when I was taught, “It is your job to put it in and mine to call it forth”. I have learned to rely on that statement as so often I am relearning as I share. People wonder how I know the things I do but they do not realize that there is no connection to that knowledge until they ask the question. Their questions feed me!
@Unshaken

As a college professor, speaker, and presenter of some 30 years, I can tell you that following the spirit is essential. Yet preparing, even over-preparing, is equally essential. But going by wrote at the point of presentation is limiting; one really needs to be with the spirit in the moment to give what is needed by the learner(s).

I really enjoyed this week's lesson you gave. Thank you for bringing up our flaws as members in general and not ignore them, also on how to address them. In specific, the you talked about the "Visitors Welcome" sign and you pointing out that part of that sign is meant for us to realize how we need to welcome everybody as they are right now with their difficulties but also their 'strengths' or spiritual gifts from which we can all be blessed. Also when you talked about the LGBT community and people from different backgrounds. I can see how God winks at us as a Church and also I can feel His love and mercy too. Looking for the gifts of the Spirit is something I will keep looking for. Gracias Hermano Halverston por desarrollar tus dones para beneficiaries a todos. Tus clases han impactado mi vida. Hello, I have been using your channel to help with my come follow me study period as I was reading verse 15 and 16 of section 46 oh, I feel like Administration can also be ministering Angels administering to the sick and Afflicted like the Relief Society administers to those in need. I'm a licensed professional counselor who deals with substance abuse mental health and Trauma in individuals and families and I feel as if I have been given this gift to administer to these families in need

I am wishing Brother Halverson was spending more time on this section because this one is about The wonderful Gifts of the Spirit! 58:27 Hear hear! Here is the kind of gift of tongues that is "The tongue of angels." It gave profound joy to both the bearer and interpeter. It is in our church history yet today rarely seen. I struggle in the Spirit wondering why that is so. Having heard explanations as to 'why' , I find myself unusually not satisfied about this. 1:13:38 we need everyone at our meetings for their gifts. I wonder what that would look like if everyone there were truly humble before God.

In response to your question "who has all spiritual gifts? Answer seems to be found in D&C 107:91-92, which would be Pres Nelson. Thank you for the COUNTLESS "spiritual gems" you have shared!! I tell everyone I know about "Unshaken". You ABSOLUTELY have the gift of teaching by the spirit. Please extend my gratitude to your wife/family for their continuing sacrifice in sharing you, with all of us! Also, I LOVED story of struggling missionary who "prayed to be taught Spanish, at night". We love you and pray for you to be able to continue sharing each week! 😇💖👍

1:02:48 The faith and audacity in this question reminds me of "Behold these stones I have molten out of a rock. Wilt Thou touch them with Thy finger, that they may shine?" What a beautiful story.

We had the 6 discussions. I mainly memorized the first two for the purpose of learning the language. After that I felt more prompted to study the topics in that language more so than memorize paragraphs. When the Preach my Gospel came out I said "Yes! That's more like it!"

In learning Chinese, I observed that sometimes the understanding just turns on, like a light in a dark room. I have concluded that all language - even one's native language - requires the gift of tongues.

I love that thought! Our own native language requiring the gift of tongues. Thank you for that perspective!

I think we can do better in the welcoming department. When I was travelling a few years ago, i attended a sacrament meeting and felt that I might be invisible. Since then i try hard to be aware of visitors and welcome them.

Reference D&C 107:91-92 with D&C 46:29 It appears the President of the Church (the head) receives all the gifts. Gleaned from Mike and Bryce on Talking Scripture.

Adding a different perspective- v. 13- “some...to know” and v. 14- “others...to believe,” .... the difference between the two could be a matter of effort, desire, work, etc. We start with believing and work to know.

I have noticed that as often as not, Husbands and Wives have complementary gifts...its an interesting thing to watch for in couples. And BTW, Heavenly Father teaches us all the time while we sleep....our minds are at rest, but our Spirits need no such such rest.

How do you reconcile that the Lord directs, at least 3 times in this section and many more times throughout the scriptures, "ye shall not cast any out of your sacrament meetings"; and the church directs to follow local officials and cast out those that did not take upon them the covidian cult talisman?

That is funny your student said that about rebooting. Since the pandemic I have felt more unwelcomed. It isn’t a loving ward anymore. Cold eyes and a cold spirit. Distractions are found everywhere especially passing of sacrament. I am grateful I can listen to your lessons and study and just go to teach primary because church (sacrament) is not my thing currently. I miss the way it was. I miss friendly faces.

Question,,,,was not Leonard Copley to provide place for the Col? Branch, and his reservation sent the branch to Missouri? instead of stopping in Ohio?
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 3 жыл бұрын
As I understand the history, the Colesville branch moved onto Leman Copley's farm when they moved to Ohio, but were forced off it when he rescinded his offer to consecrate his land. Then they were called to move to Missouri. Incredible what they went through!

We found your presentations by a referral from my sister. I"m so extremely glad we did. This Lesson, "The Best Gifts", opened my eyes on this topic that I hadn't really thought a lot about for years. I'm 72 this year and now I feel I've got so much to get caught up on. There's so much more to gifts than what I've thought about for too long! Thank you so much for this wonderful lesson, Brother Halverson! You have so much insight and perspective! You definitely have gifts! I have a question. The quote you gave from George Q. Cannon's Book, "Gospel Truth" 1: 195-196 I'd love to have. How can I get a copy? Cynthia Krause

Thank you so much! I just looked online and saw that Deseret Book sells an electronic version of George Q. Cannon's book (deseretbook.com/p/gospel-truth-discourses-writings-president-george-q-cannon-78227?variant_id=20148-ebook), and Amazon sells hard copies (www.amazon.com/dp/B002LZNBB2/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1). I hope that helps!

Sometimes there is a person with the faith to be healed and a person who can heal, but it's not Christ's will that the healing take place. You are a wonderful teacher, but you need to be careful how you talk about this.
