You should know that this seemingly "small and simple" step I took to watch the first lesson you both teach from Come Follow Me has indeed deepened my understanding and love of the Book of Mormon. I thank you so much for your time and insights each week. As I look back on my conversion to the restored gospel, I am amazed at the simple and small things/means that were placed before me that lead to my conversion and baptism. A Joseph Smith pamphlet that was given to my sister-in-law (non-member) who happened to be staying the night with us, a weekend visit with my wife's grandmother (convert) who shared some basic tenets of belief she held regarding Joseph Smith, the 3 degrees of glory in Heaven, and the preexistence. Those and other small and simple things lead my wife and I to get baptized back in 1989 and we have never looked back since. What beautiful and amazing and merciful things Heavenly Father provides for His children.

While serving a mission for the Church in the late eighties I had a companion who told me an amazing story about how chiasmus converted him to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. We were serving in the Canada, Montreal mission which was French speaking and he was from France. He was also a Jew. His father was a Rabbi and he had been in training to follow in his father’s footsteps, so his conversion to another faith resulted in his expulsion from all family ties. Considering the price he paid, I think his testimony bears significant weight. He told me that he had spent three years in Jerusalem at the finest rabbinical schools learning to become a Rabbi. In the course of their studies he had read in depth the canonical books of all the major world religions. He was back home working in his father’s synagogue when two Mormon missionaries knocked on the door of the synagogue. During their conversation he was introduced to the Book of Mormon, so he saw this as a chance to really show these missionaries a thing or two. He asked to have a copy to read, with the intent to apply the critical analysis to it that he was taught to do with those “sacred” texts he studied at Rabbinical school in Jerusalem. Well, the more he read of the Book of Mormon, the more he became convinced it had to have been written by a Jew! The style of writing so closely mirrored ancient Hebrew literary styles. (Chiasmic pun :-) He then showed me several places were chiasmus was clearly used and how it was a regular theme throughout the book. It is interesting to think about how unique every conversion to the restored gospel is. The Spirit knows our hearts and what moves us, and something of this nature, the literary structure of the Book of Mormon that I would never even have noticed, was just the right incentive to get my companion’s attention in order for him to seriously consider the book. To think that God has accounted for all such possibilities in the coming forth of the Book of Mormon is just astounding!

I didn't just "liked" this lesson, I loved it. It opened my spiritual eyes to so many things. Yes, God does work in small and simple things. Heavenly Father knows me so well . . . He has directed me to do certain things that I would not have ever done. Similar to your job situation. Marrying my husband, joining the church, having children (my second child was, what I would consider, a miracle to an answer of a prayer), jobs, people that were brought into my life, the fact that I had cancer when I did, and so many other situations. Thank you for inviting br. Welsh and would like to thank him for his extensive presentation. For me, reading in chiasm is so much clearer because it excludes everything that the goal would miss if you read a part. Well, my dear prophet Joseph Smith could never have found this writing style by himself. Yes, when our H.Father wants to protect you or to steer you in a certain direction, He clearly does that. That's how He put words in my mouth that I never thought I'd ever have to say this. My life then resolutely took a different turn because He had so decided . I know He love me and us of cause!

Powerful discussion on this specific Scripture Block. Wow, what a treat to hear Jack Welch discuss in detail Chiastic writing with Alma 36 as the backdrop. After hearing him in this broadcast, I went back and re-read Earl Wunderli's article on "Critique of Alma 36 as an extended Chiasm." For me, the SIGNIFICANT detail that Mr. Wunderli's critique missed was "The Message" of centering around Jesus Christ at the Turning Point or Crossing. Jack Welch emphasized this very well, especially in the podcast. One other point that MAY be relevant from Chapter 38 with Corianton, one of the First problems leading up to his immoral behavior was PRIDE. I think PRIDE is a denial of the FALL and the NEED for the ATONEMENT or our DEPENDENCY on CHRIST. Corianton and some of today's youth can realize that in vs.12, Satan is the King of Idleness, BUT he is NEVER Idle !! Thank you T&T Brothers.

Thank you again brethren! Excellent as usual! Brother Welsh, really has been an instrumental pioneer in discovering Chiasmus in the Book of Mormon. It is significant for the church, since it adds evidence that the Book of Mormon is true, and Joseph Smith could not have made up this ancient Hebrew form of poetry. I remember watching that wonderful video on how the revelation came to Brother Welsh, and how this discovery would be his "life's work" so humbling and inspiring. We have watching your "Come Follow Me" presentations since we have been confined at home this year. We have greatly appreciated the insights you give in your discussions of the week's readings. In our study, we watch your video and some of the KnoWhy's, I read a section in the Book of Mormon in the Grant Hardy formatted of the Book of Mormon or the Scripture Plus version with its sections, my wife will then read commentary for her The Book of Mormon Study Guide, and then we will discuss what we have just read. A few weeks ago we found your John Welch's notes at Book of Mormon Central. I have loved his notes to give additional insights. I loved your having John Welch there to talk about Chiasmus in Alma 36 and the Book of Mormon. This past December, when I knew we were going to reading the Book of Mormon this year, we were at Deseret Book and I saw Grant Hardy's Maxwell Institute Study Edition of The Book of Mormon. I told my wife I need a copy of it. It had the things that I had been looking for in a format for the Book of Mormon for over 40 years. (Your Book of Mormon Central version has many of these same features,) 1. Written in paragraphs 2. Sections with section headings to let us know what we will be reading in the next section 3. The poetry formatted as prose 4. Original chapters as in the 1830 edition. Additional things I wish it had: 1, All of the chiasmus formatted with indentations (Like you showed today.) (Can you do this with your electronic Book of Mormon Central edition?) 2. Printed on scripture paper with a nice binding. Thanks for all you have been doing for us.

I have been impressed with the memory of Alma and others in the Book of Mormon. For example after hearing Abinadi, Alma writes down evidently from memory what Abinadi said. Alma then uses what he wrote to teach others. It seems that since they had an oral tradition, part of the reason they organized their comunications as they did was to help people remember what you said. The history of people in cultures like that were often past down orally from one generation to the next. But it's also enfisized, in The Book of Mormon how important it was to have a written record. I have wonder how well I would have done if I had had to write down every thing Abinadi had said, I'm glad it was Alma & not me, who was given that task. Thank you for this wonderful lesson. I learn so much from your lessons. It was wonderful to learn from your guest today. I'm greatful for Book of Mormon Central. 💒

Hi, I'm brazilian and I've figured Tyler and Taylor in order to improve my English skills. But, just " small and simple thing" brought to pass so many blessings. I really feel the Spirit watching the videos and making notes from your insights. I shared it with my 16 years old daughter, and she started watching too. It's been more than improve my skills in another language, It's enlarged my knowledge, my vision and strenghten my Faith and testimony in Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Thank you all!!!

Your audience might be interested in an out-of-print book that is now online, "The Book of Mormon Text Reformatted according to Parallelistic Patterns" by Donald W Parry. Would you consider posting a link to it? I have a copy I often refer to. I read an article by Jack Welch in the early 70's about chiasmus in the Improvement Era or another publication. Knowing about it has influenced my study so much over the years. Thanks for always emphasizing what is most important and for your powerful testimonies.

I appreciate the diagramming of Chiasmus. I had learned about this maybe 20 years ago in a Gospel Doctrine class. The visual of the block is text, then highlighting the repeated words and assembling them in order, was visually stimulating.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Tonight before watching this video, when I started my scripture reading had this impression, why am I reading the book of Mormon? The thought came to mind, I want to draw close to God, I want to learn truth. Because I have this idea that I have to read it daily a check box to tick off. I'm missing the purpose and reason because the real need isn't internalized. There is power in the Book of Mormon when our intent for reading it is internalized thus the natural approach is a serious study of it. As Alma has said ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering through discovering the Lord through the Book of Mormon.

These three chapters are amongst my favourites from the entire Book of Mormon. I am reminded of my father's conversion story in 1961 here in Scotland. His many years of faithful service through a multitude of small and simple things. I'll never forget his regular, patient words of wisdom and counsel to me throughout my life - just like Alma to his sons. There is lots of powerful counsel in those chapters for all of us to live by today. Thanks again!

I agree, this is further evidence that its true! I wouldn’t expect that Joseph with his 4th grade education could know about ancient Hebrew poetry;). By the way, I think we’ve started to say the word ‘revealed’ instead of ‘translated’. Because Father gave him the exact words to say during the sacred process, it was revelation on both parts (from Heaven to Joseph and from Joseph to a scribe). If he had needed to translate (i.e. decide what phrases to use based on knowing both languages), the project couldn’t have been accomplished so quickly. Joseph testified that the BoM is the most perfect book. I’d guess that was partly because he didn’t need to make the hard decisions that a translator needs to. He just revealed each line as it was given to him, from a perfect Being. 💖

I love your lessons each week and look forward to your insights. I have to say that I was disappointed this week that you skipped over Alma 37:21-32 where he talks about the Secret Combinations. I worry that people aren't aware of the secret combinations at work in our land. Even though these verses focus on the judgments that are to come upon these secret combinations, which may not seem applicable to disciples of Christ, we would do well to be aware that they are, as D&C 38 warns, in our own land and they seek our lives. Wasn't one of Mormon's last warnings to us that we would one day "awaken to our awful situation" and see that these secret combinations "have gotten above us"? Is that because we failed to talk about them so we could be on our guard? Are they not responsible for the complete destruction of an entire civilization? Are we not living in a land under covenant to not uphold such secret combinations? Does it serve us to not even mention them when the scriptures speak of them so boldly? I understand that naming these secret combinations in our day leads to controversy and conspiracy theories. But, Pres. Benson warned us they are a conspiracy fact. Do we only talk about the comfortable things of the last days? I worry that not speaking of them to our general membership creates division as those who see the warnings in the scriptures start to become one camp of thinking and those who ignore them seem to gather into another camp. But the Lord warns us that if we are not one, we are not his. Please help me understand your silence on this matter. Are we left to discover these things in the scriptures for ourselves only to find it a forbidden topic among fellow saints? Alma specifically instructed his son to teach the people to abhor such wickedness. I am learning of people who are just now learning about the awful evil of child sex trafficking. Didn't even know it was happening. People find it very very difficult to believe that there is such evil in the world; That there are people in high places who are trying to overthrow our freedoms, even "in our own land". Why? Because we never talk about it? I don't know the "right" way to teach of such things, but I'm feeling very confident that not speaking of them at all is doing a great disservice to our brothers and sisters who don't have any awareness of such combinations. Not making it a "mainstream" topic, especially among American saints, makes it very difficult to navigate the deception that the Secret Combinations are orchestrating. There is the constant struggle between "standing for truth and righteousness" when becoming aware of these Secret Combinations and being mocked and dismissed by fellow saints for even thinking such things exist. The current division about mask-wearing among Utah Saints is an example of this very struggle. Those who don't acknowledge Secret Combinations don't understand the big deal about putting on a little mask out of courtesy to others and to help stop the spread of a terrible disease. But for those struggling with "the little mask" it isn't about the mask. It's about a much larger concern that sees the safety of their neighbor at much greater risk than a health issue, as they see Americans blindly marching towards a "fundamental change". Why is this even a controversy among believers of the Book of Mormon? But we can't even have a conversation about "if" there is a secret combination at work, because no one is teaching it anymore. Truly, I fear we will "awaken to our awful situation" as Mormon saw, only after they have gotten above us, and then as D&C 38 says, they will "reveal these things unto [us] by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in [our] ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth;". Our protection? "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear." How do we prepare if we don't even acknowledge their existence?

What are the secret combinations you see in our day?
@marcinilsson4 жыл бұрын
@@lymansite Read "None Dare Call It A Conspiracy". Pres. Benson recommended it. I came across this "comment" posted on a web site that I'd like to copy here in response to my own question posted above. It is an answer that helps me with this wrestle I have been having with our lack of conversations about the Secret Combinations in our day. I still maintain that members, as individuals should have their eyes wide open, but I think I can begin to understand why the Leadership of the church may choose to not actively pursue discussing it. Here's the comment: Marv Whitaker says: August 2, 2019 "Our Father in Heaven sees all things before they happen. We are in the last days right before the Mark of the Beast, the Anti-Christ, the One World Dictatorial Government, etc., etc., will rear its demonic head. It will not be stopped, it will happen. The Lord’s church and its Prophets and Apostles are commissioned to preach the gospel worldwide in all countries and gather in those looking for the truth. Being apolitical allows the missionaries to travel under the political radar and save souls in all countries may they be socialist, communist or democratic. No church leader will intentionally say or do anything that will cause a country to close the door on our missionaries. The gospel must be taught in all the world and then the end will come"
