This research about Thomas Jefferson really resonated with me. I remember learning about him when I was a kid and feeling that he was a good man who stood for truth. Now, years later, I hear how even my fellow Christian friends and podcasters that I enjoy don't like him because he was "not really a Christian" or because he was "a big liberal" during his time. I was conflicted about him, and this video was really encouraging. There is no way the man who facilitated the massive Louisiana Purchase--and by doing so acquired the grounds of Adam Ondi Ahman and many sites of the restoration to keep in the protection of the United States--was not inspired by God. Especially when you know that he was one who appeared to Wilford Woodruff to request his temple work done in Saint George.

Hannah: Read "The Jefferson Lies" by David Barton! You'll walk away absolutely loving Thomas Jefferson. Incredible man!
@bheer987 ай бұрын
@@JosephSmithFoundation I just looked David Barton up to get his book and the public websites about him say that he promotes "pseudohistory" and faulty scholarship. I find it funny how this is the same smear any author receives whenever he brings up documented stories and primary sources that show connections to America's religious foundation--especially one based on covenant. I want to read it even more now!

Remember that term liberal meant something very different back then than it does today. He was a classical liberal (think liberty) or of the liberatiran(not party) mindset.

I'm surprised that each episode just continually impresses me with the quality of research and thoughtfulness put into it. Truly awesome. A thought... no leader has any power if the people simply ignore them. But in order to do that, the people must be empowered with knowledge, and that includes the knowledge from the holy ghost, which implies a righteous people, which implies that when a wicked leader, gets power, that's an indictment of the people. I am thinking of the many religious charlatans out there getting wealthy. It's the wickedness of the people that enable that. The leader is telling them what they want to hear. Many try to attack the leader directly, but if they understood this principle, they would rather focus their efforts on educating the populace instead. Just like the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints does. It's a testament to the brilliance of what the church does and the wisdom of how it does it.

Hannah: I really resonate with your comment because I often feel, when I hear individuals (especially my conservative brothers and sisters) express frustration or even feel anger toward various leaders/professors/institutions in society who are weak or wicked-that the solution is not just "give us better leaders," but that if we are humble and righteous as a people, we will have better leaders. The power lies in the hands of the people. This can hurt, because it places the responsibility for our own demise squarely on our shoulders, but at the same time is very empowering! We can turn things around as soon as we set our minds to it. Thanks for commenting, great thoughts!

"I will be merciful unto the Gentiles in that day, insomuch that I will bring forth unto them, in mine own power, much of my gospel, which shall be plain and precious, saith the Lamb." v. 34 "And after it had come forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, that the records of the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true." v. 39 "These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the truth of the first, which are of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, and shall make known the plain and precious things which have been taken away from them; and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or they cannot be saved." v. 40

The creed makes God just a "spirit" and removes the father and son. That is Satan making himself who is just a spirit God. This is why the physical form of God was removed so a god in the form of a spirit could be the God of this world.

Also without “parts or passions” and with a biased VIP club of “saints” changing God into a respecter of persons, and the plain and precious truths in the KJV translation changed to paint God as a tantrum thrower who demands fear, terror, blood, and horror rather than fair justice, respect, and reverence…sounds exactly like what we’re taught Lucifer does. The adversary has already deceived the whole world into following him, following after worldliness, persecuting the Church of Jesus Christ, justifying anger as good, and revenging ourselves. The world is a scary place now.

Wow. I never realized all that stuff about Constantine. I thought he was one of the best emperors. I used to think that even though he got some things wrong about the gospel, he tried and sincerely tried to maintain Christianity for the sake of his conscience. Sounds like he was just another narcissistic, strategic dictator.
@FromAgonyToLight7 ай бұрын
I do believe that honestly striving to keep all of the commandments of God with exactness is enough to be saved. Otherwise, all of my efforts are wasted, and I don’t believe that. However, I do agree that it is a lie from the adversary to say “try your best, but justify yourself in doing this or that sin.” I think that’s a very big difference to “avoid spiritual overwhelm” as our sustained leaders have said.

When I think of plain and precious things, I was thinking beyond Nicene. I've always wondered if w e would find records showing something similar to the BOM where, when a Messiahanic Order or Culture that there would be more of a record of plainness like the BOM where revelation about Jesus and Baptism is in the record like BOM. I think that the Dead Sea Scrolls and Essenes testify of the BOM as they were able to show the book of Isaiah was an important book in that order because they found an almost complete scroll but they also other copies that were being worked on. There were multiple copies being made. It would have been something if they had also found something similar to 2 Nephi beyond that.

I do not support nor will I ever support the many creeds of Christianity. For each and everyone of those creeds are man-made. Each creed is up for debate because each one was born of debate, void and completely absent of revelation from God, absent any apostolic Authority since no apostles of Jesus Christ ever were present. Present however, at the 1st Nicene Council was the emperor of Rome, Constantine the Great! In fact it was him that called the bishops (not apostles) together to convene this council, it was him that presided throughout the council just nine short months after defeating two of his rival emperors in a bloody civil war to become the sole emperor of Rome. How convenient for a pagan emperor to first squash all the division in his empire, by the sword, then personally convene a council to eliminate division in the church. It’s no wonder they called him “the Great!” Not only are the creeds man-made, but they were also used against the people, including courageous clergyman, as a means of control and submission. It may never be known, over roughly the next 14-1500 years, just how many so-called heretics were put to death for opposing or simply questioning these “state-sponsored” creeds. Yet, state-sponsored they were, for the so-called true Christian church made sure they had the backing of the state in order to inflict capital punishment, if need be. Is this not the complete opposite of what Jesus Christ taught on earth? He declared, “My kingdom is not of this world….” How could it be that an Earthly kingdom can ever be authorized to meddle in the affairs of the kingdom of God? This can only happen if they share the same authority, the authority of man, but not of God. It is not hard to see how this happened, when the so-called true Christian church, marries the state, the people suffer. And they did. It’s no wonder why Christ had such forceful language for Joseph Smith during the first vision when he proclaimed these creeds are an abomination unto me!

Isn't it just amazing how many Christians can't see this? I think they've been fooled by their pastors, as well intended as the people may be. And the ones that do see through it are either making the all or nothing fallacy, declaring that if christianity is riddled with this many problems, there must be no true church or god. Or lumped in with the atheists like Jefferson. So sad. I can hardly wait to see how this all gets resolved in the spirit world.

And behold, thou art not only guilty of priestcraft, but hast endeavored to enforce it by the sword; **and were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction.** “ -Alma 1:12 Rome enforced priestcraft by the sword, and the entire Roman Empire was destroyed.

Number 4 is very close to what many faithful members believe. Boyd K. Packer often spoke about how the atonement is incomprehensible, but we must have faith in it anyway + the idea that we cannot be perfect in this life, as Elder Holland has taught + Alma's teaching that those who have been righteous are ushered into paradise to prepare for eternal life --> something very close to number 4. This is what many Church members now vaguely believe. Your list of principles at the end is sound, Hannah, but all by itself the list leads to here-now perfectionism and the discouragement that inevitably goes with it. The path to Jesus Christ is a strait, but not a straight, path. Elder Maxwell taught this often. The distinction is vital! A dose of realism, patience, and even humility would make your message more compelling. I prefer the messages of modern-day apostles to the message of Hannah Stoddard.

Have you actually read the Nicene Creed? It seems as if you haven’t. There is nothing in it saying God is a spirit. “I believe in one God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth…And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God…Being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made:Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven…And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of Life, Who proceeded from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and Son together is worshipped and glorified; Which spake by the Prophets…

Joseph Smith’s Lectures of Faith are paralleled with the creeds of Christianity. They teach of what’s acted out in the endowment ceremony. This understanding like the Trinity developed overtime. Prophets stumbled and taught some erroneous doctrines such as Adam God and taught that Blacks can’t inherit the new and everlasting covenant and later disavowed it. Same happened in the council of Chalcedon where the church disavowed previous heresies addressed the two natures of Jesus fully divine and fully human. This is called the incarnation of God (see John 1:1 Not the JST, but the KJV) The Biblical commentaries by the Church fathers don’t teach the lectures of Faith as a revelation from Jesus. So did Jospeh Smith truly understand the creed as taught by the apostolic fathers? We can trace who Athanasius’s teachings came from Polycarp, Iranaeus of Lyons, Ignatius of Antioch, Pope Celement all the way back to the last apostle of Jesus Christ. I invite any reader to pause this propaganda and study the Patristics. Learn what the apostles passed to the early church fathers through their Biblical commentaries. All the manuscripts of their works can be seen for yourself. We’ve had councils before council of Nicaea. See Jerusalem council in Acts 15. Mormons just want a political figure to represent their apostasy argument. Using Constantine to make a case for the apostasy is pretty pathetic
@NancyBrown-xw8hg7 ай бұрын
You are wrong, In the very first chapter of the Book of Mormon Lehi has a vision. He sees God sitting on a throne. He is a man and he is not invisible or un-see-able. Being an invisible immaterial substance is a big part of the Trinity and this is rejected in the Book of Mormon. As a spirit Jesus appears to the Brother of Jared, and his spirit is like a man in shape. Then Lehi sees Christ descending to the earth as a separate being from his Father. The Trinity teaches there is only one will. But the Book of Mormon shows us two separate beings with two separate wills, the will of the Son swallow up in the will of the Father. Lecture 5 say man was made in the image of Jesus and Jesus is the expressed image of the Father. BTW, D&C 93 telling us the elements are the Tabernacle of God was written before the Lectures on Faith were.
