Many people have told us that they are not fond of the God of the Old Testament. In these first few lessons, we want to spend time learning about the character of God. This will help us as we venture into the rest of the Old Testament. This lesson reminds us that God is good and that He desires to bless us. This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying Genesis 1-2; Moses 2-3; Abraham 4-5. Here is what you have to look forward to:
Assume the Best
You are already Good
The glimpse of a Heavenly Mother
Becoming a Magic Maker
We love studying with you,
David and Emily

As a convert, I honestly got teary eyed after this lesson. So many of the things taught today opened my eyes and helped me realize that God cares about each and every one of us individually and He created everything we have on this earth for us. It put a whole new perspective on why we need to take care of this earth and each living thing, each other … people, animals, plants, our oceans, etc… He created it all for us to enjoy and appreciate and ultimately for us to be stewards of. There are so many other things I learned, too many to mention, but I loved how you stated that women were the ones to become witnesses of His earthly plan and how women were created equal and that as men and women we can work side by side to make our families stronger, our communities stronger and each other stronger. Such an amazing lesson. Emily and Dave you are both gifted teachers, so thank you for sharing your gifts.

A new reference to our Heavenly Mother was given in the revised 2019 Young Women Theme. "I am a beloved daughter of heavenly parents, with a divine nature and eternal destiny." It used to read "We are daughters of our Heavenly Father who loves us and we love Him". I was called to a position in young women last year and when I read the new 2019 version for the first time I became quite emotional. We now get to acknowledge our Heavenly Mother each time we repeat that beautiful theme!

Recently in a Stake Women’s Conference one of the breakout classes was about women serving other women. The sister guiding the conversation at the beginning mentioned how we are daughters of Heavenly parents then asked several questions. One of the questions was, “How has Heavenly Father answered your prayers through other women and what are your personal experiences?” Several sisters shared amazing stories of people showing up for them and all of a sudden I had this thought and vision of our Heavenly Mother hearing our prayers too and leaning forward and saying, “Tell her I said this… or prompt Sister So and So to take her a pie, or reach out and give this sister a hug.” I was blown away by that thought. Not to take away any of Heavenly Father’s power or focus but how often as wives and mothers do we prompt our husbands to say things or reach out to people. Loved this lesson and the thought that they are intertwined in purpose in helping their children!

I love that verse in Abraham 4: 18 “And the Gods watched those things which they had ordered until they obeyed.” This, to me, validates the principle of agency. The things that they ordered were not forced to obey they chose to obey! And the Gods watched until they did!

Great lesson, as always! I love the discussion about Heavenly Mother and the use of God as a plural. I am still puzzling out something I have heard several times, and that is that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament. I’d love to hear a discussion about this, including what was discussed in this lesson about both Heavenly parents.

Thank you for reminding us that we are not finished, we are still good no matter where we are. This is very comforting. God bless you for this. I love also the reminder of God's creativity and imagination. This is something that fascinates me. He is so creative. A real artist! I am grateful for dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, birds of all kinds... This earth is so marvelously great. It is too bad that some of God's children do not appreciate it as they should. I think that sometimes, it is all of us. We take it for granted and forget why it has been created. Pour earth who is suffering so much because of us.

I love this commentary! I have always had 2 thoughts on Heavenly Mother. One that Heavenly Father was sort of protecting her so her name could not be taken in vain ever and because of the pain a mother would have seeing her children do the things we all have been doing. The other thought is a little more out there and I'd love your thoughts on it...in the Garden of Gethsemane the angel that comes to Jesus - if you are in that much anguish - who do you need? Your mother! I think it was Heavenly Mother that came to him to comfort him like NO one else could and give him the strength he would need to get to the end. The apostles had to be asleep because it was such a sacred time. Anyway - thanks for your videos, etc - I love it all! bunches of love Noelle

In his final general conference talk, Elder Bruce R McConkie opined that Adam was the angel in the Garden of Gethsemane. In his own words summarizing the events of the Atonement, he states “We know that an angel came from the courts of glory to strengthen him in his ordeal, and we suppose it was mighty Michael, who foremost fell that mortal man might be” (The Purifying Power of Gethsemane).

I love this idea! Whether it's right or wrong, we don't know. But I feel strongly that Heavenly Mother is involved in ways we don't know and don't understand yet. The important thing is that we ponder on her role and are patient in waiting for more understanding. I often think that when I have motherly instincts, they are gifts from Heavenly Mother.

I'd love to jump in here about our Father protecting our Mother. This just feels so off to me. It's what we've been fed in the Church, but I hate it now. Our Mother is omnipotent, all powerful, and equal with the Father. No loving mother on earth wants to be or needs to be protected from her kids. She's there in the mess, wiping the tears, hearing the heartache. If her children are hurting, wounded, empty, she is there and I know that's how our Mother is for us now. And I love the idea that the angel is Her. But if it's not, Heavenly Mother has many symbols that represent Her. Trees, groves, olives. So Jesus chose to go to a grove of olive trees to perform the Atonement, I'm sure knowing that He needed Her presence.

David, keep being YOU! Not everyone in the gospel is the same, I remember when I came out of the temple one time with friends and gave a fist pump to the sky and a little yelp of delight and asked my friends didn't they just love when they came out of the temple and felt so jazzed!? They just looked at me with the oddest expressions and said, "No, we just feel calm and peaceful..." Haha, I learned then that some of us don't react the same way to the gospel and that's more than OK. I love when you share how you view the gospel because I feel like I can relate to it because of my high energy personality. Don't worry Emily, I relate to you too because of motherhood and love your lessons as well. Thank you both for all you do, I learn so much in each and every video!

I am just starting these studies with you, and already it has been quite helpful. I had some impressions as I was listening which will hopefully hold meaning for someone scrolling through here. 1) If we learn to Assume the Best about God, we may learn to learn to assume the best about others. What may be preventing us from making those kinds of assumptions about Him and our fellow human beings could be the sort of pride that refuses to allow us to examine in any detail our own shortcomings. 2) Heavenly Father makes the best good for us out of our choices, whether or not they could be considered mistakes. Even great evils in the world can be turned by Him to the benefit of all those who honestly seek Him. Thank you for creating this channel. It is good to have guidelines and structure to study the Scriptures, and to have such delightful people to guide us.

I think using other translations can be useful side by side with the KJV, but I have notice that some of the “modern language” translations completely mistranslate scriptures. The modern translations are only as good as the knowledge of the people doing the translating, so it is based on their opinion of what the scripture means. That always makes me feel a bit uneasy, especially if that is all you are reading and don’t have the KJV + Joseph Smith Translations.

Emily, thank you so much for sharing a part of your book. For years, I’ve looked at the process of the creation as a series of events required in order for the next part of the process. There needed to be the separation of land and water in order for all of the plants to survive. Those plants were needed in order to create the atmosphere that would support the arrival of the animals. ❤️

I can't help thinking about the rest of Adam and Eve's story as you talk about the creation. And I have been thinking over and over about the moment in which Eve agrees to take the forbidden fruit. I find her to be incredibly brave to have done such a thing. And here's why, well one reason. She was the answer and the remedy to the only thing that God said was "not good." Man being alone was not good. She was the answer to that problem and at the moment of taking the forbidden fruit she would have known that the problem she was to fix would be a problem again. It was her purpose to be the help meet of Adam. She had never experienced what it was like to be alone because he had always been there. But she made the choice to experience the only bad thing that had ever existed on the earth so that "man MIGHT be." Adam didn't have to partake of the fruit like she had and she was taking that chance that he wouldn't. But Adam had experienced the one bad thing on the whole earth and he knew that God had fixed it by creating Eve. Yes, they couldn't fulfill the commandment given to them without partaking of the fruit but I feel like there were so many more factors going through her mind to finally choose to do the one thing they were forbidden to do. Eve was never weak. She was eternally strong.

I love the story you shared! I had a similar experience, this happened just last year. I was impressed to take the kitchen garbage out right away on a Saturday morning. I never do that. And when I got to the garbage can I smelled gas. I assumed it was from the propane tanks on our camper. I dragged my husband outside. The tanks were closed. I called dispatch. They had the fire dept come over they confirmed the gas smell and contacted the gas company. Gas company came out found a gas leak in our yard. A tree was planted over the gas line years ago and mangled the line and ripped it open. They had to rip out the tree and repair the line. So grateful for Heavenly Father watching out for us all the time.

I love the idea of Heavenly Father's vision. That he could look at the soup and see the potential. Some people see land, or an old broken down home and throw up their hands. No idea where to start. I particularly appreciated your comment about the Gods watching until what they had created obeyed. I particularly enjoy creating power points with transitions and effects. One thing I love to do is sit back and watch it unfold as I designed it to do. I do it to check that it is right, but it is also exhilarating to watch the vision I had while designing it unfold. I can now picture the Gods - excited to watch the processes of their various creations playing out before them, as they were designed to do, excited and invested in each and every result and claiming, "It is good."

I think "until they obeyed" has to do with the life cycles being perfected. When they "obey" means to me that these earth cycles are now up and running perfectly and ready for the next day of creation. And each day takes as long as it takes for that system to obey. Looking at it this way allows for room for evolution.

I am loving studying the Okd testament this year. The story of creation has already opened my eyes to so many new insights. Genesis 1: 2 All things have seed in themselves for procreation.( how interesting that much of our food now is being de-seeded, with GMO and it seems so nice to not have to remove the seeds, yet this is going against the purpose of creation) First commandment(here it is called blessed them) to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth(Genesisi1:28), yes however the other parts of this are overlooked. also included here was command to subdue it(the earth), and have dominion over. Subdue means to conquer,to tame, to overcome, to soften. and dominion over means Supreme authority, power of governing or controlling. Power to direct, control use of at pleasure. these are very intersting as we tend to give our power and authority to direct our lives and govern things around us away. Saying things like "I had to" "I had no choice" etc. This is actually a skill we are here to understand. Of course using righteously, however most with power tend to misuse. God's is blessing us with our ability to govern our lives and what happens in our lives. I could go on and on here, however I will leave this for now. I love how you shared creation is a process and to celebrate the goodness along the way. That too was an important point I received as well. And the importance of resting after a creation/creative process is complete. I am still searching for the reason it did not rain upon the earth until the flood. Genesis 2 :5-6 Genesis 2:24 they are now considered ONE flesh. There are later references that add more to this (see Genesis 5:2) God calles THEIR name ADAM, since there was no last name, this makes me think of as we would say" The Becks"(as a couple) I love how you bring Heavenly Mother into your lesson. YES! She is definelty referecned here. MAle and Female likenesses. and if Adam and Eve were ONE so to is Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother ONE. I love how we learn what is spoken comes to pass. God spake, and it was so! Am I careful about what I speak? As a man speaketh. What am I bringing into creation with my words?

BTW, “help meet” is a Middle English phrase that means something more like “good companion” or “satisfactory partner.”
@kissthecamera
@kissthecamera 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I secretly hate that many people make it sound like one word. The word help is separate from meet, and it’s connected to the way that “help” is used to talk about the Savior. Ezer knegdo. It’s not lesser than, or an assistant role.

@@kissthecamera You’re welcome. I’m glad you found that comment useful. The misuse of the language is a pet peeve. Old English majors surely must have many pet peeves, I think, given the disrespect our modern educational culture seems to have for the past.

Great lesson! The story about the Disney lamp isn't quite right, but your take on it does provide a heartwarming visual of God overseeing his creations. Excellent lesson! Just a little note, in this lesson you speak of "Christians" in a way that sounds like you are saying that Mormons are not Christians. I have worked so hard to get my friends to try to accept that Mormons are Christians. I think it's good that we all encourage that understanding. Thank you so much for all of your preparation and enthusiasm for the Old Testament. It's going to be a great year!

25:20 reminds me of the sweetest video of a grandma making cookies with her grandson, and he’s just eating everything that goes into every bowl. She is so patient and he is just so crazy. It’s hilarious, but it also carries so much meaning after hearing how God helps us grow and progress and watched us and helps us learn to obey. I will post the video link in a reply to this comment (I have to go find it again).

We love this! We got the app but it isn't enough devices for our family. In our family and I would say almost all the families around me have at least 7 people that could benefit. Our home has even more but I know at least 7 would be faithful about using it, so it's a little sad for a lot of families and some of our family members BUT we still love it. ❤️

If you build or repair a piece of machinery, or set up a (hopefully) self-running system in your family or classroom, or anything similar, you don't just set it up and then walk away. You watch it for awhile until you see that it's going to run the way you intend. That's how I've always read that verse that Emily likes so much and David objects to.

@@SBaker-dx5dy Thank you very much. Somehow I missed the book you mentioned, but I found a two-volume set called (Voices of Torah), one volume edited by Hara Person and the other by Sonja Pilz. I haven’t received either of those books yet, but I look forward to it. I have a real appreciation for the Jewish Publication Society and all of the Jewish rabbis and scholars for their contributions. Hardly anyone ever mentions the Tanakh as an alternative to the KJV, and I think that’s sad. I do believe the JPS version of the OT really adds something worth thinking about.

Emily - What book do you have and use on the Torah? I would love to read the part about when God created woman again. That was very insightful to me. I wonder what the Torah says about cheribum. I've read that cheribum is "an angel" that is a man and a woman together guarding the throne of God. What a beautiful concept to me. Showing me that women have a role in what I've always thought was just a priesthood function or calling.
