I’m an adult convert to the church, I’m of Jewish descent and was raised Protestant. I’m glad this is getting covered because my faith in this church doesn’t come from having grown up in the Book of Mormon, it came from having grown up in the Old Testament and the New Testament. I’m always floored when I mention something from the OT and everyone around me looks at me utterly blankly. And these are people of great faith who look at me and say “oh, I never really did much studying in the Bible.” The Book of Mormon is on shaky ground without a firm grounding in the Bible. It makes it super easy for those who accuse us of not being Christians to throw our kids off guard if they don’t know all of their scriptures. When all of the scriptures are studied it provides our children with a much firmer foundation in who we are and what we believe.

Agreed! I think a full study period requires all standard works cross referenced including modern Prophets i.e. General Conference.

It might surprise you that for much of the 1900's the B of M wasn't taken seriously. It took President Benson telling the membership, it was under condemnation for not reading and studying the B of M. It should be a balance between all of the scriptures with the B of M as the keystone.

My very experience. I am not Jewish. I learned about the Lord and my love for Him grew from reading the Old and New Testaments. It has been very surprising to find out how little the members of our church knew about them.

Good news! I live in star valley and we have only one print shop in Afton, wy. I ordered my print and picked it up. They asked me what is this? I told them it is going to be an old testament study guide for my family. They said they have printed, just in that small print shop, at least 25 of those! I thought that was so cool! We are watching you in star valley! Thanks!

I am in 'awe' that God knows each of us so intimately and personally, and that I can see Him in my life all the time. After reading about how His works are numberless and that we cannot possibly comprehend that, but to Him they are all numbered; it just makes God more wonderful to me. To realize how He does remember everything/one he creates. I am so grateful to understand this. It brings me so much joy to know this and I am so excited to study the Old Testament this year. 2022 is gonna be a great year!

I think the fact that so many members of the Church believe the Old Testament will be dry/difficult/boring is proof that we have failed in this one area where other churches have succeeded. I attended another denomination as a child and still have memorized the books of the Bible as I was taught them as a 7-yr-old. I mentioned Adam and Eve to my 7-yr-old Primary class and not one of them had ever heard of them. I sang, "Adam was a prophet, first one that we know..." and they all knew that song, but still were clueless. Children and youth of other denominations are very familiar with and don't fear the Old Testament, so why are our children left in the dust? We need to step-it-up. Hopefully, the COME, FOLLOW ME program will help us to not embarrass ourselves any longer in front of the rest of Christiandom.
@Lifeletnothingholdudown
@Lifeletnothingholdudown 2 жыл бұрын
I find this very interesting because I have tought primary and the children know who Adam-and-Eve are, I have never experienced any of what was said. You know sometimes their are people who criticize the church what really needs to be looked at is the critique of one's faith in Jesus Christ.
@LisaCapron
@LisaCapron 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lifeletnothingholdudown ouch… really? Your response to a valid critique is to insinuate that T Gilbert’s faith is shaky? … and it IS a valid critique. I’m also an adult convert (Im of Jewish descent and was raised Protestant) and my nine children were at all different ages including adults and we see this even among the adults who are super strong in the faith. Some of my very very best friends admit to me that they don’t have what was considered a basic knowledge of the OT for children in the Protestant denominations. My BISHOP even admitted to me that he was floored by the depth of knowledge in the OT that my then activity’s days aged children possessed. And it’s a problem… because the Book of Mormon comes out of and is established firmly in time by the events of the Old Testament. While the words of the BofM are valuable and add necessary depth and meaning for the OT…. If they stand alone they are not as strong or as meaningful as they would have been to Joseph Smith who grew up in a time when knowing the OT was considered basic schoolboy stuff.

@@LisaCapron Does not the Church not provide the true teachings of Jesus Christ and the book of Mormon? We as adults are the ones to be teachers to our children. If they are not learning then who is lacking the church who pervades spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ and the book of Mormon or is it the teacher who may be lacking or is it something else? Sometimes you can run across a child who has learning disabilities and they need that extra attention. I've never experienced or judged a child or children who has not learned what I think they should because they all learn at their own pace. We are all learning at our own pace. I don't believe in finding fault in the church we are all human finding fault only is damaging to our personal spiritual growth with God. When we find fault it can make others who don't have a strong relationship with Jesus doubt that the church is not true. We must be careful how we express ourselves because we effect how others see the church. I would not want to be responsible how others see our church or rock someone's testimony. If someone thinks the children are lacking they should go to their bishop or Primary President and talk to them and discuss how they can change it. I just don't think it is wise to criticize the Church on KZbin something is lacking when one feels the need to do so. I'm sorry but I do have a strong testimony that the church and the teachings are true maybe I came of to strong. I think it is damaging to the spirit when there is criticism towards the church makes Me wonder if it is damaging to the children. Children are very intuitive they see and feel everything, this affects how they learn.

Epiphanic moment when i watched this video for the 4th time after doing the whole scripture study - when Dave said "I get my identity directly from God". I realized that we get ours from our Temple attendance, scriptures and Patriarchal blessings. I now realize that if I had done my full scripture study beginning of this week i would have been better prepared to confront someone who convinced me otherwise. Mystery unfolded. My cup is a fourth full from the Book of Mormon two studies ago, a fourth from the D&C, The Old Testament may overflow and a new cup may be needed for the New Testament. You two are so preciously enthused and your faces and glowing eyes speak of your sincerity and your devotion to our Godhead. All was sparking and igniting the spiritual hunger for more. The beginning of this day started out as a personal challenge and I was feeling great anxiety and almost worthless, you explained that this is the corner the devil wants to catch us in. I got hold of my spiritual power and prayed that these feelings would diminish and they mostly did, the day will be fruitful and I will overcome the whole of self doubt. Thank you

As we exited the Candlelight Christmas Processional in Epcot, we walked with throngs of people from all over the world speaking different languages. The exact thought you mentioned distilled on me. I got a small glimpse of the vastness of God’s family! Wonderful analogy Emily mentioned with Andy’s toys (from Toy Story)! I want to take the name of Jesus Christ upon me!

It may have been long, but it was NOT too long. It was good - very good. I needed every word. I have always loved the correlation between mortal birth, a priesthood function given to the daughters of Eve, and re-birth, a priesthood function through mortal ordinances and covenant making through the priesthood of men. And both birth and re-birth are accomplished through blood, water and Spirit. Moses 6 is precious.

Really great episode! Thanks for all the hard work you put into these lessons! One comment: You mentioned you might sometimes use the NIV. I would discourage you from using the NIV. It is heavily biased by the translators, who were all evangelical Protestants and required to affirm that “the Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written, and is therefore inerrant in the autographs”. Since Latter-day Saints are neither evangelical Protestants nor Biblical inerrantists, it is not the best translation for us. A few examples particularly relevant to Latter-day Saints: 1 Samuel 1:9, 3:3 - The NIV has translated Hebrew hekal, meaning “temple”, as “house”, most likely in order to conceal the fact that Samuel is shown serving at a temple before there was supposed to be one. (The structure has a doorpost and doors, and is clearly not the tent-like tabernacle described in the Pentateuch.) Psalm 82:1, 6; John 10:34 ("God presides in the great assembly; he renders judgement among the “gods”:...") - The NIV adds ironic quotation marks around “gods” to imply that the word should not be understood in the normal sense. The obvious reason is to weaken the polytheistic language of Psalm 82. James 2:17-18, 20, 22, 24-26 - The NIV translates ergon, meaning “works”, inconsistently throughout the epistles in order to push the Bible’s theology on faith and works in a Protestant direction. In negative contexts (e.g. Romans 3:27), the NIV translates it as “works” almost without exception. However, it avoids any positive association with the word “works” in verses like James 2:24, which has been translated, “You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone”, and James 2:26, “so faith without deeds is dead.” The NRSV is more consistent and theologically neutral, translating it as “works” in all these passages. James 2:25 is a particularly egregious example: while the Greek text literally says Rahab was “justified (dikaioō) by works (ergon)”, the NIV translation says Rahab was “considered righteous for what she did”, even though the NIV is happy to translate dikaioo and ergon as “justified” and “works” in passages like Romans 3:28 (“For we maintain that a person is justified (dikaioō) by faith apart from the works (ergon) of the law.”) 1 Peter 1:17 - The NRSV correctly reads “If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds…” Because this verse suggests that people are judged by God according to their works, contra Protestant theology, the NIV changes the wording to mean something slightly different: “Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially…” 1 Peter 3:21 - The NRSV correctly reads “And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ”. Because this conflicts with Protestant theology on baptism, the NIV has changed “appeal to God for a good conscience” to “pledge of a clear conscience toward God”, which has a very different meaning. 1 Peter 4:6 - The NRSV says “For this is the reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead”. The possibility of salvation after death obviously conflicts with Evangelical theology, so the NIV has changed it to read “For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead.” I would instead encourage the use of the NRSV. This translation is highly ecumenical with translators coming from a variety of different religious backgrounds. (Including Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Jews, and non-believers). This has helped reduce theological bias, Furthermore it is the main translation used by universities and Biblical experts.

What a neat idea for following along with the timeline and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament! 😊💗🕊️✡️✝️ Some the things that people preparing the King James Version of the Bible is similar to how we are directed to do today, like the First Presidency & Quorum of the Twelve meeting together, and coming to a unanimous agreement as directed by the Holy Spirit and also making sure translations for the Standard Works (especially the Book of Mormon) is suitable for the Countries and Nations receiving these scriptures in their Native tongues. 🤝📖

Moses was raised in the most powerful cavillation as royalty. When faced with the presence of God, it is interesting for Moses to realize the insignificance of mankind. The realization that man is nothing is interest in the context of his upbringing.

How do you do all of this!!! Parents, spouses, podcasts, teaching seminary/institute, and now an app. I am exhausted just writing all of this down. So grateful that you both seem to have boundless energy and pray that this year I can keep up. Made it through 2/3 B of M and D&C. Committed to competing this year with you. BTW There is an antique bookstore out in Riverwood that has copies of old Bible 1610. It is worth your trip!

I have a question, how is Adam and Eve the beginning of relationship with God? Didn't we have a relationship with God in the premortal life? I guess it could be the beginning of our mortal record. I can just feel my spirit yearning to know more of my relationship with Them before this life and within this life. I am certain that we only have a mustard seed of understanding about our relationship with our Eternal Family, God.

I really wish they'd do a printable version for those of us who either don't have $ or don't have easy access to Deseret Book or...whatever.

Firstly, y'all are amazing and I just love learning from y'all so so much. Thanks for sharing your spiritual talents to us. Secondly, the link isn't working for me or highlighting for the timeline. I'd love it for my family and to help my kiddos understand. The link isn't blue for some reason to print. I keep googling and site hopping unsuccessfully and can't find it. Bah!

As I'm listening to this, I'm wondering if you have a favorite ink pen which you use to write in your scriptures which doesn't bleed to the other side of the page?

Some Bibles have less verses. They break a verse in order to have the same number. Other times a number is missing. I rather use the KJV because it matches the BoM and the D&C.
