I like the section "All Things Working Together." I appreciate that Jared Halverson dispels popular false doctrine. Like the counterfeit "everything happens for a reason." Then "Malleable or Hardened Clay" shows we are not pre-destined but we have freedom to choose.

Thank you for clarifying the "everything happens for a reason". Growing up in the gospel but also with abuse, that phrase made it feel harsh that God wanted those things to happen to us. And it also made the perpetrator not seem responsible for their actions. But over many years I've come to understand that it didn't happen for a reason, but it did happen, and God can work all things together for our good. While I wouldn't wish those things to happen to anyone else, I am grateful for what I've learned and who I've become as I've turned to the Savior. Thank you so much for your lessons!

Brother Jared…what a caring and wise father you are…I s appreciate your loving example and wisdom. As an alcoholic now in recovery, for so many years of trying and falling back, trying and falling back…I finally just gave up, and looked at myself as the wretched man that I continued to be. Then , with the encouragement from the Lord, I began to try again. I began to seek the strength of the Lord…by praying Oh wretched man that I am, and seek not to remain so….my life began to change. From that instance I have found the Lords strength to overcome the gravity of my addiction. This strength is real, for He knows everyone of us personally…through Him and with Him…wretchedness becomes forgiveness…and a new veiw, and a new heart to be filled with Hope, and faith. Thank you for your personal reminders…to me, they are always the highlight of your lessons. We love you brother…keep up the good work❤️😇. David

Thanks so much for you commentary and homiletics. Several years ago my wife and I were invited by Os Guinness to a religious retreat with some business leaders. We were the only Latter-day Saints in the group of 15 or so couples. The speaker at the opening luncheon was the very respected evangelical philosophy professor at USC, Dallas Willard (of blessed memory). In the Q&A he was asked about heaven and the afterlife. He said he wasn’t sure, but in this life we “are in training for reigning.” One person said that sounds a little like Mormon talk. Willard responded that he didn’t know how else to interpret Romans 8:15-17.

Love, love, loved the commentary on prayer. So often my words have felt completely inadequate to express my love, gratitude, and even my sorrow and despair to Him. So much so, that at times I’ve had a difficult time praying. Now I understand that this in and of itself can be a prayer. I love the thought of sitting in those things and sharing them with Him. Not even saying a word. That to me, is more powerful than anything I have ever had an ability to put into words. Thank you!! That changes so much for me. …And that the spirit is praying for us for our needs. Wow! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t aware of that. I can’t even tell you the joy that brings my soul. And the clarification of all things working together for good to them that love God. Such a great explanation that helped to give me a better understanding. This is why I listen… all of the stories, interpersonal stories and understandings. I am beyond grateful for the love and knowledge He expresses to us through you. ❤

God’s grace fills our guilt gaps, but there’s not a start and stop to fill that or I should say those gap(s); and it is definitely not ‘after all we can do’. God’s grace comes before and continues on after our guilt gaps. Let us not misunderstand it doesn’t start or stop with the gap. His grace is sufficient beyond the guilt gap. His grace enables our eyes to see the need for a Savior, to have a desire, or increased desire to come unto Him and to continue to progress and improve. His grace is all encompassing from the beginning and throughout eternity. He is the vine, we are the branches and without being connected to Him we can do nothing!

My dad used to get asked if he was saved by evangelicals often. For a long time he would talk about what was meant by "saved." Towards the end of his life he just started to answer "yes" because usually what they meant by 'saved' was resurrected. We all have that free gift from the savior. However, eternal life is a different matter.

I find it interesting how common it is, even among Church members, to hear the sentiment “everything happens for a reason.” As you mention, this is the type of statement that seems like truth until you really sit down and think about it. I think one of the easiest ways to disabuse ourselves of everything happening for a reason with the perennial question “why do bad things happen to good people?” If everything happens for a reason (implying God is micromanaging every facet of everyone’s lives), then the reason behind bad things happening to good people is a hard question to answer because it paints God in such a bad light. However, recognizing bad things happen here because we live in a type of hell (we’re out of the presence of God and under the influence of Satan, after all) helps us understand bad things are going to happen to everyone. The real question is how do we react to the trials of life? Do we call upon the name of the Lord to ask for assistance, or do we curse God and die?
@curtiste3235 Жыл бұрын
Very insightful. Everyone is at a different stage of finding those things out. It's a deep well of understanding these truths. Thanks for sharing. 💜

We cannot progress without agency. It is natural law for agency to co-exist with chaos. Mortality is a probationary period where man prepares to meet God again. The chaos / agency is a gap between the justice and mercy of God. The natural justice of God gets suspended to allow us a chance, time if you will, to repent. Jesus Christ with His Atonement stands in the gap to help us.

3 Nephi 17 I remember as a kid struggling deeply with some internal issues and doing (what I think is normal) the open the Book of Mormon and reading whatever verse your finger is on… well I opened up to 3 Nephi 17 : 6 after reading it, in disbelief I looked to see what the chapter was about and instead of my eyes making it back to the summary I read verse 1…. I knew in that moment that God cared about me. And Jesus Christ was my Savior.

As I read all of this before you released your video I was curious to get your feedback. I so enjoyed sitting with you and studying together but boy there are times I want to be in the same room to ask,”what about this? And how do we marry this doctrine to this one?” Finding the “ goldilocks zone” as you say, in a time when Satan is so very conniving, it is difficult to know when to defend against the Corihor types (especially when they are in your family) and when to just let them be and listen gently as they criticize the brethren and yet know Scripture well enough to try to play it against you. The spirit helps for sure but it is difficult.

I a gree when people say "everything happens for a reason" - however, I always add "everything happens for a reason, but not everything happens on purpose." There is a reason behind everything. That young lady found herself in the situation she did by reason of the choices she made, and the choices of people around her. The reason things happen is because of choices made, good or wrong. Then, go further. The reason we can make choices is because God gave us agency. The reason God gave us agency is that He lives us and wants us to become like Him. It works for natural disasters - the reason for a hurricane or earthquake is because a volcano, or some other natural weather pattern. That's the reason. So, what's the reason for destructive weather? Because we live in a fallen world. Why do we live in a fallen world? It goes with the reason for agency - the reason is because God wants us to learn and grow. The reason He wants us to learn and grow is because He loves us and loves us with perfect knowledge. Therefore, the ultimate reason for everything is God's love and His work to bring to pass our eternal life. Yet... not everything happens on purpose. Does God point out people and, with a zap of His finger, go "you will have a child out of marriage" zap "you will get a divorce" zap "you will loose family to war" zap "you will loose loved ones to natural disaster" zap "you will be abused"... of course not! Horrible things don't necessarily happen on purpose by God, but there are reasons why they happen - choices and consequence and a fallen world. I suppose I could put it this way - the reason you burned your hand on the stove is because you chose to touch it (or someone pushed you into because they were choosing poorly). The reason it burned is because it was hot and hot things naturally burn. Now, the purpose for which your parent turned on the stove was not to burn you, it was to make you a healthy meal, they even warned everyone it was hot. That's life. It's not a perfect metaphor, but it the best I could come up with. Saying things happen for no reason, seemes, to me, to deny responsibility for choices made. That's why I say everything happens for a reason, but not everything happens on purpose.

Hi. Brother Halverson... Where in Revelation is the throne scripture that talks about how Jesus can share His throne with us? You mentioned it in this lesson. I want to cross reference Romans 8:17 in my scriptures w/ that verse. (I remember you teaching about that revelation verse last year, too, but I can't find it...) Thank you! I have been listening to every lesson of yours in it's entirety for 2 years, and I am so blessed by all that I am learning -- mostly that I know my Heavenly Father and Jesus so much more. I am changed for the better. I am also a much better missionary, too, because of what you teach - to love and build others where they are -- even if they are of other faiths or no faith. I have had so many amazing missionary experiences coupled with what you have taught and what I was taught by Pres. Bunnell in the Utah Orem Mission. He taught last October that every interaction we have w/ others is by divine design not coincidence. So as I interact w/ others and listen to the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost will often tell me: what questions to ask others, what topics to bring up, how I can love others or help others, or how I can in natural and normal ways testify about Jesus Christ or other gospel principles. When I follow the Holy Ghost in my interactions with others who cross my path by divine design each day -- I have had so many beautiful missionary experiences this past year. Thank you for teaching me how to love, share, and invite so I can do Jesus' daily ministry mission He gives me each day. :)

No judgement here... just love and prayers.💙🙏🩵 I'm so sorry for your pain and loss. That would be very difficult. I lost my first husband to suicide so I understand the feeling of'failure'. The only choice we have now is to fall apart or move forward. And we make that choice every day. We can not change the past, but we can seize the present and make a new future with God's help. I don't know if I'll remarry in this life but I can choose to follow the Savior and know he knows what's best for me. Several of my best friends have been married more than twice. They are amazing people who inspire me and make a huge difference in my life. I value them beyond words. They, like you, have many of the same doubts about themselves. We talk about it often. It's still a struggle but together we are stronger and wiser. We remind each other that all we can do, is all we can do. (There's a good book by that title, btw 😊) And the rest is not in our control. Remember that the counsel & instruction given in these classes is general, not specific. The scriptures are to be taken in the context of all other canonized scripture, prophetic revelation, and under inspiration of the Holy Ghost. If this is unhelpful, toss it out and know my heart was in the right place even if I'm off base. 💜💜💜 Blessing to you.
