I use a 8 megapixel Ricoh GR digital for black and white and a Canon Ixus 100s for colour. Both are tiny. Both have CCD sensors for beautiful film like pictures. You can buy the Canon for 50 and the Ricoh for 150.

You're wasting money if you're paying $2000+ for an X100V. As you say there are so many alternatives out there you're spoilt for choice. Other Fujis (XE2, X10, X70), Lumix (GX85, GX9, GM5 to name but a few, all with OVF), Olympus (EM5, Pen F, gotta love Olympus colours), even Sony (RX1 and the severely underrated A7C, both full frame). All interchangeable, except the RX1. Don't need an ovf? EPL7. People need to research the alternatives, not get caught up in hype. $2000 will not make you a better photographer. Save the money and spend it on lenses.

Lot to unpack…X100V isn’t really pocketable. GRIII/GR IIKx is. Both have very good image quality. Both have. Good, not great, AF. Fuji more robust. GR more ‘ninja’. GR can have issues getting dust on sensor via lens (in/out)…there are accessories to prevent but they add bulk. If I bought one of these today it would be the GR.

I've still got a mint condition Fuji X-70 which really is pocket-sized but my alternative which I honestly think is bizarrely underrated and overlooked is the Lumix GX9. I have the Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 on it and the black and white jpegs are insanely good. Autofocus, ergonomics excellent!

The LUMIX GX9 really is insanely good in terms of features and ergonomics. The only thing I don’t like about is is that, lacking a joystick, changing the autofocus point is a two step process - left button and then D pad, which is similar to the X-E2. It also has Panasonic jpegs not Fuji recipes, which are nice but different.

I have the x100v and I will highly recommend the OM5 with the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 I also have as a alternative. With that package you get a slightly smaller package. Fantastic ibis along with that retro style. Better face recognition. It has built in nd filter but better implementation on 100v which I use all the time. It depends on my mood which I use but both are fantastic. And with lens you can get it for about what a x100v goes for msrp.

Used to shoot Fuji but reduced my kit by selling my X-T4 and most of my lenses. Still have my X-E3 and XF 27/2.8 and XF 18-55/2.8-4.0 though and that’s working great IMHO.

Your thoughts are totally relatable! I just bought an XE-1 for 180 and am glad that it was from someone who didn't make use of the current hype. It has some normal wear but is fully functional. I don't care it's not a perfect camera, I got it because (of course) of the colors and for the purpose I'm intending to use this, it will do the job just fine. I could probably get the same colors in post with almost any camera but I also wanted a daily driver that looks good, is light and does good colors sooc. Can't wait to take it outside!

The X-E1 has one of the best sensors Fuji ever made IMO.. give the monochrome sims a shot also. Some Fuji enthusiasts swear by that sensor for B&W. I’ve printed & framed images from an X-E1 and even recently got another request to print an image from it. It’s got slow AF & write speeds (be careful not to turn off while it’s writing a file) but it’s an absolute gem. GREAT price also!!

I picked up an X-T5. For bang on amazing pictures I use my 23mm F1.4 RLM WR with grip. For a smaller street shooting profile I take the grip off and slap on the 27mm pancake.

I had the X100V on loan when it first came out. I only had it for a few days but to be honest, I never got on with it. I am a Fuji user (X-T4, X-H1 and X-Pro 2) but never felt I needed the X100V. When I had it, the price was around £1300 - it is now ridiculously expensive!! I would like a small EDC camera and I'm slowly leaning towards the Ricoh GR iii (or iii X). An amazing camera for less than half the cost of an X100V on the secondhand market. What are your thoughts on the GR iii?

Great video! For me, I go Silver color to match the retro style. I think it suits well on photography-focused cameras. But black is better for "stealthiness". For just a bit over $2k, I got the X-T5 + XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR both BRAND NEW. Now I have all the dials, touch-screen, 40MP sensor, interchangeable lenses, film simulations and I LOVE everything I got. I don't get the leaf shutter and the OVF, but I absolutely don't need those. I understand these have their values, but I surely would not want to spend that much money for them.

I have had X-PRO2 since it was launched. I also have X-H1 and X-T5. However I still like to take a the X-PRO2 and the original lenses that was launched with X-PRO1 and a small camera bag with 18/2, 35/1,4 and 60/2,4 macro when I go out for a walk with my dogs. The camera gear weighs in roughly equal to the one liter water I need for the dogs when the temperature goes above 20 degrees. I love the feeling of taking pictures with that camera and those lenses. The X-PRO2 have a AF-C that works descent in good light and I can take sharp pictures also on my very fast dogs in good light with 50-140/2,8. X-PRO2 is a great camera when you use it for the right type of motives. I think many pay ridiculous money for a Fuji 100V because it looks great together with their fashion clothes.

I LOVE the X-Pro2. I will say I did sell my X-Pro2 and am already regretting it. My ‘main’ body but I always want a grab and go camera. The X-Pro2 is almost a little big for tossing in a coat pocket so I am considering the X-S10/X-S20.. but there is a good chance I will go back to the X-Pro2. I cannot express how much FUN the X-Pro2 is… but you know! Thank you so much for your comment.

The GR III and GR IIIx are AMAZING cameras with amazing image quality. My main ‘issue’ with them is no EVF. I live in SoCal and when shooting in very sunny conditions I often review images on the EVF when they are harder to see on the LCD. This made shooting with the GR a bit of a pain for me sometimes. They are also ‘on the clock’ for dust on the sensor.. you can do things to delay.. but it’s only a matter of time.

Got my xe1 with 18mmf2 for less than 350usd used. The lens got better vintage rendering and the x trans 1 sensor has a more organic look. I prefer it everyday to the x100v.

I read that the optical formula on the X100V is redesigned (less distortion, better resolution etc etc), but considering it's a fixed-lens camera, seems like $2000 is pretty high, yes? Man I miss my X100T. Fun compact shooter.

Fuji did improve the lens on the V. Basically, prior to the V the 23 f2 lens was known for being soft when wide open and close. Other than that.. new lens pretty close to new lens. The X100 line IS a Swiss Army knife of a camera but definitely not worth spending $2K on versus better options. Let the hype die down if you really want one.

Obviously lacking capabilities for telephoto work, so need another body. Or realistically speaking, if you are not looking for retro rangefinder look, just get a XT or X-Pro :D

Looking beyond Fujifilm, I have found everything I need in a used Leica D-Lux 6; but you can get a brand new 7 for $1,400. That’s with a 24-75 1.7-2.8 zoom, “pocketable” that has awesome colors. It’s light on megapixels (17 for D-Lux 7) but geez, that’s all I need for travel and non-technical shooting. I have gotten some of my best pics with this camera, which surprised the hell out of me. Maybe that’s cause I carry it around much of the time (it’s that compact) and am therefore ready. Anyway - check it out; it has great flexibility.

I am not purchasing a X100V at a premium. Fuji has announced they have stopped manufacturing this camera. The major camera stores aren’t accepting new orders. What am I going to do? I am awaiting the X100VI. I want IBIS and the 40MP sensor. Fuji rumors suggest the announcement of the new camera next year. If it has the two features I mentioned I will immediately order one. I would not recommend the X100 series to someone new to Photography. Look at something like the X-T30ii or X-S10 and a lens like the 18-55. Maybe buy used so you can sell if/when you grow out of it and not lose too much $.

Great video. I bought the X100v when it first came out. Love it. I have the 28mm conversion lens which I use a lot and is tack sharp. I guess this camera became very popular suddenly and production couldn't keep up so prices escalated. It took a while for me to become comfortable with the fixed lens as I am a zoom guy but it is a keeper. I use my Xt-5 with interchangeable lenses.

Owning the x100v I wouldn’t say it’s horrible with the eye autofocus, but it definitely isn’t good for the price. Even at retail. Even single point AF can hunt in great lighting conditions. But few and far between in that scenario.

I was a sony shooter primarily video, but had xe2 and xt20 as my fun streetphoto. Now that xs20 is out, I switched mainly to fuji for both vid and photo. I really like the compactness and how powerful it is. Agree with you with x100v, it's overhyped and overpriced in the 2nd market.

I've been using an X100f for a few years and I'd recommend that as the best alternative option to the v. While a couple of the v's upgrades are desirable (mostly the moderate increase in sharpness at f2.0) all I need to convince myself how stupid the hype-pricing has gotten is to go shooting with the f. It gives me the quality, color science, recipe options, manual adjustments, and, well, everything else I've loved about this camera since the day I bought it. And while I'll most definitely grab a v (or its successor) when the prices come back to normal, I'm happy enough with my f to wait it out.

Nice video! Because you're exactly telling what I think😀 I have an X70, an X-E2 (which I bought years ago for 190€) and an X-T3. A couple of years ago I wanted a 23mm lens. Then I thought it would be cool to spend a bit more and buy a X100V (before the hype). But unfortunately I didn't... But I am as cool as you are. My X-E2 is great! I have the 28mm but I always sacrifice the pocketibality (?) to put on the 35 1.4 because I love it, the lens and the combo. But, what led me to buy the X-T3 is the EVF of the X-E2. It's a pain in the a... When I had the X-T3 I thought 'Wow, now I see what I am photographing!' And the X-T3 is quicker, better in all fields, especially when combined with a LM-lens like the 16-80. Now I want a X-H2s. I am doing wildlife with my 100-400. The X-T3 is also not able to track. And I want my Fuji-AF-pain to be healed... But now I am in a weird situation: I could sell the X70 for the most money. Up to 1000$ with accessories... New it was the cheapest camera. The X-T3 is very low in price at the moment, I would just get 600 for that. Just a little bit more than for the X-E2! Which is weird because the X-T3 is the way better camera. I don't know what to do. Actually I don't want to sell any of them, I love them all. The one I would sell most likely would be the X-T3, but it has a too low price at the moment. My dream camera would be an X-E2 with the original 16MP sensor, EVF and the tilting screen of the X-T3, no touch needed but the five-button-thing, better AF. And the 35mm with a fast and silent linear motor, pancake and 2.0...

Sure it’s a cool camera but it’s not the end all, be all. Xp3 slaughters it for a fraction of the price and I could actually change the lenses. This camera is ridiculously overpriced, hinders creativity with fixed lens, terrible ergonomics, mediocre IQ and there are so many better other options. Having a fixed lens and using a digital computation is well, not good. Agreed low light is on par with a cellphone. It's merrily a cultist obsession generating hype.
