In years past I would have melancholy in the Fall. A profound sadness, that I knew would pass, but still the dread of coming winter would overtake me for a time each Autumn. When I came to identify it and name it I began to turn it around. Our country home is only 40 acres (more or less) but set in a vast woods away from others. I walk our land everyday I know it as intimately as a loved one. A dear friend. I see, hear, and smell new things each time I walk. It renews me and refreshes me. It’s my time alone with myself, and with God, it gives me time to listen to Him and be quiet. Yes, winter is long, and the outdoor chores are harder in the cold and ice but I can enjoy this season too. It’s beauty after a new snowfall is beyond compare. I’ll keep taking my walks as long as my body will move. I am blessed. Thank you for your video!

If you struggle with the cold, wool for weight is much warmer than cotton, I’m a Search and Rescue field leader in Washington and we have a phrase cotton kills, because it’s actually a relatively poor insulator relative to weight. I personally love merino base layers, and leggings wool sweaters and filson wool clothing. House of bruar makes some lovely wool skirts made for country wear. The one kind of cotton that can be worn is waxed cotton, for example outback trading co and drize-a-bone makes long and short waxed canvas jackets perfect for chores that can be purchased with Sherpa lining. (They also make kids coats too). They can be found on eBay as well for cheap. I use pants made of similar fabric for SAR, and their highly water resistant, ( for everything but the hardest downpours) bomb proof, long lasting and can be maintained by rewaxing and don’t show dirt. Frye Boots also makes fur lined leather boots as well for women. Kepner Scott makes kids leather Indiana boot that can work all year round for snow and sun and everything in between. If your a big skirt fan, Artic horse makes women’s outdoor skirts, including, rain skirts, snow skirts (insulated), wool skirts, and waxed cotton skirts.

I touch and smell everything. I was raised in rural farm lands of W. Tn. I miss it so much. I live in the burbs of E. Tn. Mts. Now. My neighbors think I'm quirky because I'm for ever rubbing the pine needles between my hands to smell them, sometimes they have a slight hint of lemon as do magnolia blossoms at certain times of the seasons. Nature is so delicious 🤗

I have come to enjoy the winter months more and more over the years too. I still look for ways to get outside everyday and turn compost or dig down in the flower beds to feel the earth or look for bulbs peeking up. The winter is a gift of rest from the Lord- for the garden and for us. I might still try to grow some radishes indoors come February just to scratch that itch. ♥️

It stirs up the peace on the inside of me and joy overflows. I do the same forest walks in NH , gathering nature’s gifts to make terrariums that add a wee bit of green to our long winter months. Boughs of spruce trees, red berry branches and pine cones to make the house look and smell festive.

Love the bird pinecone feeders; unfortunately, where we live...we have tons and tons of squirrels who get to any bird feeder, before the birds do! At my last house...I had a RAT in my tree, trying to get at my suet feeder!

The pecan leaves are everywhere and the nuts rolling off the roof, what a sound they make. Nothing has gone to sleep yet. But they say we will be having a warm winter here in the south this year. Happy Thanksgiving. So much to be thankful for. I live on a six acre farm and I've always loved winter. Besides the chores inside, and throwing wood in the wood stove it's a time of rest and warmth. No bugs, no garden work, or lawn work. Cooking and baking good food to eat and hoping to get snow this year here in Kentucky.
