I agree with you, the magical comfort that comes from a wood fire has no comparison. The warmth that feeds your soul, the smell of smoke reminiscent of many fond bonfire memories and the mesmerizing flicker of the flames and twinkling of the embers. Gazing into the fire is meditative for me, it takes me to a whole other mindset and level of inner reflection. I've spent many nights growing up sleeping next to our fireplace and many nights sitting by the fire and under the stars throughout our Canadian seasons. I believe fire should be respected, and when respected can become a comforting refuge.

I love this. I enjoyed your thoughts about cooking, fire, family and homestead. I grew up on the edge of a medium sized city, Salt Lake City, Utah. But, I’ve always felt more comfortable in the wilderness, the mountains and the canyons. And, I’ve always been fascinated by fire. And, I love cooking on fire. I have a cast iron skillet that my grandmother used to make meals for my dad when he was a kid. And he’s 89 years old now. One of my most prized possessions. And a Lodge Dutch oven that I have owned since it was new over 20 years ago. So many meals. So much history and tradition. And so delicious. Now, I live in a beautiful log home in the Uinta mountains of Utah. With the sweetest woman I have ever known and our four amazing dogs. We use those cast iron pans every day, and life is so good. So much gratitude. Thank you. 🙏

Deep in the human DNA is the urge to levitate to fire and water. Whether a open campfire or a roaring fireplace, each invites gatherings of social interaction while soaking in the warmth. Just as fire invites, so does water. Pools, fountains, and even the water cooler are congregating places of relaxation and interaction amongst people. Life is all about the basics and the basics are all about life. Blessings!

You are so right about the mood-adjusting affects of a fire. At times in our 30-year marriage when a fire has not been possible, my husband and I have had an oil hurricane lamp burning on the breakfast table each morning. It's very meditative. It's centering. It starts the day off right.

Cooking by a camp fire is the BEST! Fire seems to smooth peoples inner beast don't you think? For me it brings my heart and soul into a warm and cozy place. Your country side is absolutely fantastic. I have a pot from my brother like that and have used it many times making stews and soups on the camp fire. Like you said it does taste and look better. While outside you get your lungs full of fresh air and in turn your appetite gets bigger or at least it does for me.

I've only seen a few of your videos, but after watching the Townsends channel for a while, I took to cooking in skillets on the bbq outside (I can't build a fire in my yard where I live). I typically cook chopped vegetables and small pieces if meat in the skillet right next to whatever I am grilling. Very different than stovetop flavors, since putting the lid on allows me to get some of that smokey flavor in the skillet foods. I agree, fire is special. It's almost as if it is living energy born of a spark, growing to a raging power, fading, and then dying - just as we do.

We don't have a fire in our current home and it feels like I've lost something important, something I crave. We'll be having a Christmas bbq with my parents though, it's a family tradition rain or snow. Sitting outside as long as we can stand in front of the chiminea then coming inside to the open fire in the house.
