Love it! Perfect! So many people I know have trained their dogs into running away whenever they call their dogs, because it's always for something bad! Like going to get brushed, or nail trims, or getting shoved into a crate. If only everyone knew to start off their puppy this way so 'coming' always meant a good thing!

Well, as you said, the teenage years can be tough. Just be patient and practice a ton in situations where it is easy for him to be successful and in many places so that when he's an adult, he'll be a recall master

I am working with "older" rescues - of the shy, fearful variety. I have an affinity for helping them through the shyness. I have a Bernese that is food motivated, but she still has trouble learning a concept; I have a Newfoundland that is NOT food motivated, doesn't know what toys are, and is still working on trust. Any suggestions?

Trained our puppy like this but out in the wide world he comes back when he wants to if he thinks it's home time he just sits and stares at u, used whistle treats praise even cooked and cut up a sausage !

For the bernese, I think you should try clicker training. For the Newfie, have you ever heart of BAT? Maybe try a mix of BAT and clicker training.

Most of the time my pup comes when called, but the times he does not he actually runs off or in the opposite direction. He does not do it very often, but he still does it. What can I do to fix this? He is a mixed, large breed, intact male only 19 weeks old. (my vet wont spay until 24 wks) Thanks, Jo

Take your dogs in steps before going on another concept. For example: if you were teaching your dogs to roll over, you would teach your dogs to lie down and sit before doing so. Don't get ahead of yourself when training your dogs. I hope this helped! :)

does food motivate your dog? if so, use their meal (little bits of kibble) or if they don't like their food use chicken, and maybe that'll work!

My dog is in the rebellious teenager stage. He knows the come command, but he chooses when he wants to come... for example, if he's sniffing something particularly interesting and I don't have food reward on me, he chooses to ignore me. Suggestions?

I think if your puppy is trained very well, they may understand your panicked reaction. Try to stay come and speak in your normal voice. Keep your pup super safe until you know he/she is totally trustworthy when coming when called.

She does do this in a large grassy field. Check out the videos. Besides, this is only step one. Your practicing in a controlled, safe environment and getting him used to coming when called.
