He is right in 1991 we did not expect anyone shaking hands But in 89 and 90 and he is right they did come in the locker room I did see McHale, Cedric Maxwell, Robert Parrish went into the locker room the Lakers and congratulated them in the Locker Room.

Zeke nailed it. Losing hurts. Well, it should. My 13 year old son plays basketball. Most of these kids don’t care if they lose. Five minutes after the game they’re laughing and joking. That translates all the way through the pros. It’s about what the game can do for them, not what they can do for the game.

What taught me pro basketball wasn't real was the 1991 ECF, no way in the world that Bulls' team was better then the Pistons broke up their team by waiving Vinnie Johnson and trading James Edwards to the Clippers in the summer of '91. Remember, Thomas was President of the Player's Association so he made sure agents got less money, had the players get a 53% revenue share from the new NBA/NBC Contract in 1990-91 and he's defeating the #1 money-maker for the league in Jordan and won back-to-back titles ... then he winds up with wrist surgery in Jan. of '91 ... that entire situation was messed up from the start, that entire thing wasn't real at all. I personally believe based upon what happened, Thomas didn't have a choice, Chuck Daly didn't have a choice and Pistons GM, Jack McCloskey didn't have a choice...so Isiah did Chicago well but nobody was looking at it that way.

@@atm1919 Well, I didn't stop there, I looked into it further. Remember when Magic/Bird were rookies in 1979-80? Well, Dr. J. was the face of the league, right? Remember, Magic told him, Dr. J. took him to his house and he spent the summer with him prior to going pro. So what did we see? 1980: Magic wins defeats Dr. J. in the Finals; a rookie playing out of position beats the face of the league who had Finals' experience. Bird gets to the ECF against Dr. J. 1981: Bird down 3-1 to Dr.J. wins, right; Magic is out early to Moses Malone, MVP of the league. Bird wins his first. Magic and Bird have their titles in the first two years due to an MVP in Moses Malone and Dr. J. stepping aside. Why? To further the league. 1982: Magic beats Dr. J. 2-0 vs. Dr. J., yet in the ECF again, Bird hooks up Dr. J. Magic has 2 Bird 1. 1983: Moses Malone joins what team? The Sixers, to help Dr. J. win -- they win in a sweep vs. Magic. Magic paid it forward. 1984: Dr. J. loses in the first round and it's a Magic/Bird Finals; Magic has all that Finals' experience, beat Bird in '79 and chokes in game 2 running out the clock then missing free throws in game 4 and in game 7 giving it away. Bird wins and Magic has 2, Bird has 2. '84 Draft - guess who comes up? 1985: Bird hooks up Magic. 1986: Magic loses to Hakeem/Ralph Sampson who Hakeem got rewarded later. Bird moves up and wins vs. Hakeem 1987: Hakeem loses to Seattle, making it easier for Magic; Thomas throws it to Bird in '87 in game 5 to make it a Magic/Bird Finals for the league; Magic wins 4-2 and in game 4, Bird confesses Magic is the best he's seen to tell his fanbase (white society) to embrace Magic. Why? To further the league. Bird steps up for Isiah Thomas after game 7. Why? Forward the league. Thomas gets rewarded later. 1988: Thomas makes the Finals, Bird gives him '88 because Thomas gave him '87 and it's best friends Magic-Isiah in the Finals. Thomas is 'injured' Magic wins due to that call only playing 23 minutes in game 7 so now Magic has 5 titles. 1989: Thomas gets rewarded for what he did for Bird in '87 for the league and Magic is hurt in game 2, barely plays in game 3, Thomas wins his first title. One hand washes the other. 1990: Thomas wins back-to-back as Magic did due to what Thomas did in '87 and '88. 1991: Thomas hooks up Jordan, helps the league out by taking just 9 shots in game 1 and only 9 shots in game 2; Chicago had a 117-76 foul shot attempt advantage from games 1-3 of the ECF. Remember, from '88-90 Jordan lost to Thomas; in '89-'90 and in '91 Barkley lost to Jordan and Ewing lost to Jordan. So let's help out our friends. Remember in '90, Magic stepped aside to help Kevin Johnson which enabled Thomas to win back-to-back, even though the Lakers had the best team in '89-'90. Clyde Drexler loses to Thomas in '90, needs to get rewarded. Magic retires in '91. Why? 1991-92: Pistons break up their team by not re-signing Vinnie Johnson/James Edwards to make it easier for Jordan who is king of the league now, Isiah paid it forward as did Magic. Why? To help out the league to keep things moving. Now Jordan wins back-to-back due to Thomas not competing and Magic retiring. Jordan defeats Ewing and Drexler. Remember by this point, Ewing and Barkley were up-and-coming; Barkley's team in Philly messed themselves up by being injured with Johnny Dawkins and getting rid of Mike Gminski and messing up their team, then they got rid of Mahorn. 1992-93: Barkley goes to Phoenix, gets to the Finals with Kevin Johnson due to what Magic did for KJ (who was in the ECF in '89 and '90 due to Magic). Ewing was supposed to get there but guess what? JORDAN COULD NOT LET GO like Bird, Magic, and Isiah. See, it's the losing teams that make the other team win. Dr. J. did this for Magic; Bird/Magic did it for one another; Moses Malone did it for Bird and Hakeem did it for Bird while Magic did this for Hakeem in '86 and Malone in '81. Jordan did this for Thomas from '88-90; Ewing did this for Jordan in '89, '91, and '92 and for Thomas in '90; Thomas did this for Bird in '87 and Magic in '88 as Bird did it for Isiah in '88. So now what happens? Jordan cannot let go and give it to either Barkley or Ewing, so what happened with Jordan in '92-'93? He had to retire going into 1993-94. Remember the '93 Finals? Barkley stated after game 5, 'God wants us to win the world championship...' What was he saying? Well that sealed him forever losing. 1992-93 was supposed to be Barkley vs. Ewing; Knicks vs. Suns because both Ewing and Barkley with Kevin Johnson paid their dues earlier to get to that point. What happened in '94 and '95? Hakeem got rewarded for letting Bird win in '86 and Magic in '87. Drexler got rewarded for what he did for Thomas in '90, Magic in '91, and Jordan in '92 so Drexler got rewarded by being traded to the Rockets. So now Jordan had to come back in '94-'95 with only 17 games left and what did he have to do? Get humiliated like Thomas was humiliated, lost the ball to Nick Anderson (from Chicago) just like the sweep in '91 the 'walk-off' were all led by guys from Chicago: Aguirre, Laimbeer, and Thomas. So Jordan gets the ball stolen and loses the ball in game 1 like Thomas did in game 5 but lost to a young Orlando team, he took the lost and what happened in the following season? They win with who Rodman, who was purposely acting out in San Antonio when they had the best team in '94-'95 to help Houston win. Rodman and Jordan got rewarded with a 3-peat; Jordan vouched for Rodman to get his contract all 3 years in Chicago. See? That's how the league works; the losing team is helping the winning team win to forward the league and they create stars and stories surrounding this .... This is why I believe the Pistons let the Bulls win to forward the NBA with the Jordan-Era because this is a business just like Dr. J. did this for Magic/Bird, he took the losses so the league could flourish; just as Thomas was labeled as 'bad' or 'evil' to make Jordan look good. The thing is Jordan really believed this was real and got played. Jordan never realized Thomas let him win, which is why Thomas is all over talking about that series in how he beat Jordan because his legacy was ruined because he had to step down to make sure Jordan won, and he did and the Pistons broke up their team on purpose to help Chicago win.

Boston did, how do we know? Because Isaiah Thomas tells us: let's do it the way the Celtics did it .. the obvious takeaway is the Celtics did something odd, let's copy them. But the Celtics were in physical danger and left for safety, the pistons were sore losers and the game was not over. Let's not face the fans, let's not show the bulls respect (even in 2024), let's not support our teammates that are still out on the court competing.

Great interview as usual but.... did the Pistons go into the locker room and shake? Did the Bulls stay on court and shake and wish the Pistons luck or did they do it in the locker room in 1990? Did that happen in 89? The story we were told was "we shook their hand in defeat and it motivated us to win" but now I'm hearing no one expected it as if that's the same as guys like Dumars who graciously gave it. We know what's up. Bill Laimbeer said "fu#$ those guys" and yall went along and it was hoe-ish and embarrassing as was when Bird did it.

It has genuinely bothered me for years how underappreciated Isiah Thomas was and still is. Him and Steph Curry are the only 6’3 and under NBA players to be an unquestioned #1 guy on an NBA championship winning team. This has always been a tall man’s league and yet a 6’0 Zeke Thomas can authentically and truthfully say that he was the most valuable player on back to back title teams.

Zeke was such a great talent for a guy who is only 6’1” and did what he did on the court when the big men were dominant. That era of the 80s and 90s was most definitely the most entertaining basketball 🏀. Now it’s so boring to watch 🏀 games, too many 3point shots. The defending is almost nonexistent. The fun of watching a game back in the day was how guys scored with such tight defence. Everyone played differently and you looked forward to the matchups! The ratings are dropping and it’s going to continue to decline if the NBA doesn’t make changes! The referees are way too sensitive nowadays compared to the 80s. The intensity that guys played and the rivalries were so much fun! No knock on the players now but the NBA for sure needs to make some changes! Zeke would be scoring 30points a game if he was playing today! Guys like Bill Laimbeer and Vinnie Johnson were key players on that Badboy Pistons team. Would be great to hear from some other Badboy players.👍🏽🙏🏽

Security at that time was utilized back then in the Palace (remember the MALICE?), especially against Boston because of the physicality of that series.. Yes, guys like Edwards and Salley kissed up to Jordan because they wanted to chase a ring by joining him. Dumars knew he had to play the nice nice game because he had aspirations to go into management after his career, and Jordan, like he did Isaiah, had the influence and favor with the bigwigs, to keep people out. He even says it was common to go and congratulate the other team OFF the court, sometimes in their lockeroom. Not mandatory or expected, but common. I guess your hero wanted them to kiss his ring for the cameras.🤨

Yes. The smear radio campaign that MJ & Phil ran during that series warranted much worse than the Pistons declining to shake hands. All of the so called basketball historians neglect that aspect in order to continue sipping from MJ's jock strap.

Even though I’m a huge Jordan fan, I do acknowledge that the interview jordan did during the conference finals claiming that the league would rejoice at the end of dirty basketball was unnecessary, however, pistons have to acknowledge that their team was dirty, great yes, but still dirty
@thereisnoend
@thereisnoend 13 күн бұрын
@rellyrell72 I appeciate your objectivity. I do challenge the dirty narrative because the league and refs defined what was deemed dirty and the pistons received fouls at the same rate as the so called clean Celtic & Lakers teams during that era. Pat Riley demanded hard fouls on every team he coached. The Bad Boys were no "dirtier" than any of the top teams in the East during that period. Atlanta Hawks, 76ers, and Celtics games had plenty of incidents. The media let MJ, Phil, and Celtics label them dirty because they had bigger profiles. The Bulls won the political war and fast forward, the NBA is damn near unwatchable because there is zero physicality and over reliance on 3's. MJ was just as great at marketing as he was at basketball. Think about it, some guy talks crap about you to everyone then cries when you dont shake his hand. That is an example of mental gymnastics What he stole from the City of Detroit by keeping Isiah off the dream team is unforgivable. It wouldve meant a helluva lot to the people.
@rellyrell72
@rellyrell72 12 күн бұрын
I would definitely disagree about the pistons being no more dirty than the other teams in the east and if you listen to the old school players talk about those pistons they would disagree as well. The pistons may not have fouled at a higher rate than other teams but it was the way they fouled that earned them that reputation. And as a religious watcher of bulls games over the course of MJ’s career, I know what I saw. However, I would agree with you on Isiah being left off the dream team, that was wrong. Even as a bulls fan I wanted to see Isiah on that team not only because he deserved to be on that team but also because even tho he and Jordan didn’t get along, they played great together. All you have to do is look at the all star games to see what I say I true. I also agree that the nba is unwatchable now, I’ve been an nba fan for 40 years and I haven’t watched a single game so far this season. You can’t blame that on Jordan, the nba didn’t lose its physicality because of the bulls complaining about the pistons. Right after the pistons came the Riley led knicks who were even more physical than the pistons. The open floor, no defense all threes era just happened over the past decade

Zeke and his rehashing the whole handshake thing with the Bulls and MJ in 1991 is just getting old! Here is what he and supporters of his seem to miss EVERY TIME: MICHAEL JORDAN SHOOK YOUR DAMN HAND AND VERBALLY CONGRATULATED YOU EVERY TIME YOU BEAT HIM IN THE PLAYOFFS, EVEN THOUGH LOSING HURT HIM LIKE HELL!! If anyone disagrees, look at the damn tape. With that in mind, you should have responded in kind. That’s why MJ has an issue. You lacked class then and it seems you still do. In the Last Dance and other interviews you said that if you could go back in time, you would shake hands. NOW YOU WANNA DOUBLE DOWN AND GASLIGHT THE BULLS. I’m sick of this dude and I’m glad he was kept off the Dream Team!

Thank you Zeke and Mark for keeping it real this entire podcast. Today's players are talented but most of them have the laziest playstyles it looks like they're just phoning it in and collecting their check. These guys are blessed with genetics and opportunity to play a sport for a living and they're taking it for granted. I understand they still worked hard to get where they're at but without those 2 blessings they wouldn't be there and they're squandering it with this spoiled attitude on and off the court. Not all, but most of them.

Isaiah can laugh all he wants and say it wasn’t expected until 91, but it wasn’t only that they didn’t shake their hands. The Pistons walked off the court before the game was over and Isaiah ducked and hid. He also said the tradition was to shake hands and congratulate the winning team in the locker room after the game. They didn’t do that either. Just own it.

@ it was common to meet them in the locker room. If they didn’t want to do it on the court like Jordan did, that’s fine but he should have met up with them in the back. They didn’t. AND they walked off the court with time left in the game like a bunch of punks. Jordan ended their run and they knew it, but they would have shown some sportsmanship.

Zeke is right. Teams didn't shake hand before the Bulls and MJ started crying about it. But Zeke didn't make the matter better though, because it looked like he was sneaking out the arena. Also Zeke and Kevin McHale ( his roommate at the Pan Am games) did dap up after the Pistons beat the Celtics. Guys who were close did show respect to each other on the court. Salley and Dumars paid their respect to some of the Bulls players. Not all the Pistons walked off.

The late, great Patrice O’Neal (R.I.P.) once joked that his football team did an Indian rain dance when they hurt a guy on the field. It was hyperbole, but behind every joke is a hint of the truth. You wanted to be vicious. That killer instinct made athletes great. It’s the reason we loved guys like: Lawrence Taylor Reggie White Walter Payton Earl Campbell And many others…they wanted to punish guys.

Ok Mj shook your hand in a loss for a few years and when he finally beat you you walked. You can make it sound corny now. You think Mike wanted to shake your hand when he lost. And nobody really made it a big deal but Mike didn’t like it and I guess that’s all that counts when he became the biggest name and didn’t like you. The hand shake became talked about because everyone was trying to figure out why you got snubbed

Mark you let Steph and Klay shoot from 50 feet and now you and Isiah blame the nba for bad product. Could that be you who caused it? Your idol Isiah just said you defended and allowed Steph and Klay to shoot from beyond the 3pt line. This is a typical Isiah video, filled with contradictions and jealousy.
