I think it’s very clear that Ricky is so reasonable that tony doesn’t- doesn’t insult the humour, he doesn’t break down, he doesn’t begrudge others their laughter purely because it upsets him internally- he just didn’t laugh. It’s a great sign of strength and contentiousness.

Sorry but this means a lot to me, I'm a suicide survivor* and I said I'd react in the same way as Ricky, and people are having a go at me and saying "don't go to comedy then" 🤷 (I won't if this is the best humour they have to offer) and to "get some tampons then", but all Ricky literally did was answer the comedians questions? He wasn't even rude or disrespectful, so thankyou for acknowledging this ❤️ *Just to clarify suicide survivor means I've lost people to suicide! Just to be clear!

@@Silvercentipede So why do you call yourself a "suicide survivor" if you have never tried to kill yourself. You have had friends who killed themselves but YOU specifically call yourself a "suicide survivor". Might I ask why you are trying to bring so much attention to yourself? Is that some kind of a egoistic problem or you trying to be selfish, you trying to make everything about yourself? Its a shitty thing to call yourself a "suicide survivor" when youre not even the one doing the killing.

I've just started watching this programme and after having to deal with my mum being suicidal 12 years ago and me being suicidal now due to going through recovery for a physical condition at 23 years old, I'm so glad this was addressed. I reacted the same way, especially as I've been very suicidal today due to my condition being extremely bad and would be horrified if any comedian ever tried to make a joke about suicide. Great show 💕

In fairness I don't think Ricky's saying that you can't make jokes about suicide or that jokes about suicide are inherently bad. Rather that its simply okay to not like a joke for personal reasons without having to necessarily shame or censor the comedian.

Maybe, but if anyone's got the right to feel that way it's me. If you can't understand why you literally owe me an apology here and now, then please never speak to a person in real life. I think the show was clearly trying to present the comedian to be a bit of a dick and not very funny, so I got the idea Ricky was trying convey the idea that he was in the wrong. If you didn't get that interpretation from it then cool whatever , it was probably up for interpretation anyway as most forms of storytelling are, but please work on your manners if this is how you are with people in real life. @Arif King ...if you don't mind me saying so , I believe you are reading a bit too much into the general aesthetic of this particular scene in question, which possibly conveys the awkwardness that humour can either create - even in an appropriate environment - or alternatively be utilised as a temporary cloak of hope in one's darkest hour of need. @Black_Goreinu 2 жыл бұрын
@@kire3324 It was kind of a dumb comment anyway. Tony is not offended by the joke as much as he is in grief over his wife's death. If I remember correctly, he didn't even want to attend the show. He does ruin the mood by telling his story, and you could say he got offended at the comedian calling him out for not finding the joke funny - basically asking him ''you don't find suicide jokes funny?'', but not the joke itself. If you think Tony is offended at the joke and not just generally depressed and fed up with people, you probably didn't watch After Life or just don't get it. Also, Ricky Gervais has no problem with this sort of joke or even worse in his actual stand up. The whole point of this scene is to showcase how a depressed suicidal individual sees everything in their life polluted by these suicidal and negative feelings. To generalize and call a bunch of people pathetic is SUPER PATHETIC.
