The mistake people make is assuming every German was a Nazi, and that every soldier was a Nazi. The Nazis were a political party, not a people. The average military members were no more a card carrying Nazi than our modern day militaries are card carrying political party members. The individual may but it is not the norm. I know I know the smooth brains hear something like this and immediately jump for the “Nazi sympathizer” button, but stop and think for one second. The average German soldier was not a Nazi. He fought for his country just like everyone else. That shouldn’t be the end of the discussion. -Why- did he fight? How powerful was the Nazi party really? How powerful was Hitler really? If we don’t understand how the average person was conned into believing that fighting that war was the right thing to do, then we won’t be prepared for it if it happens again.

Look, this was 30 years after, the age of the audience shows. Not all the people chanted the Heil. And you can see the sudden embarrassment.
@lufsolitaire5351 Жыл бұрын
Most of the older folks in the audience would of been in their 20’s/30’s back during those times. Many would of at the youngest been in the Hitler Youth/League of German Maidens and the older men military-aged->Wehrmacht veterans. Just how it was, maybe some let it go and other didn’t, regardless it would of been ingrained whether they took the propaganda seriously or not.

@@carolineogbonna6719sieg heil means hail victory
@brera24347 ай бұрын
@@carolineogbonna6719 by using an inititally innocent game of back and forth calls, he got the audience to respond with the mandatory greeting from 1933-1945 during the Nazi regime - Sieg (meaning victory) and Heil (Hail) i.e. hail victory. He gave the audience a stronger prompt by slightly stretching his right arm upwards - the greeting always had to be accompanied by an outstretched right arm. This happened during the carnival of cologne of 1973. It's political carnival festival that takes place every year in February for a week - and the comedians who take part in it are known for their evil humor. This greeting that he tricked them into has been illegal in Germany since the end of WW2, you could actually end up in prison for it (yes, even nowadays, in 2024) and the people in the audience, especially those up front, are usually the more privileged of society - mayor, police chief, mininisters...so quite the embarrassment for them!
