Honestly- that’s a really hard skill to consistently always have. I think I have adhd so I empathize with him just thinking about the next thing he’s gunna say and zoning and not listening. I have to purposefully constrain myself and go out of my way using all my focus and attention to give other people full space to express themselves. It’s hard- most people don’t interest me, and I can’t just make them be interesting. I find listening to my children easy- but they are inherently interesting to me. Or girls I find attractive. But otherwise it’s so so so hard.

These panic attacks Bert says he wakes up in the middle of the night is 100% just withdrawals. Let's wait a day he goes full on psychosis on a middle of a pod (in my language there is a word for it, but for example my friends dad was an alcoholic and would go full blown psychosis time to time and like once when my friend was like 16-17.. he was watching tv with his mother and the dad just comes totally out of it to yell in the living room are they having sex in there..). Some of Bert's anxiety stories in hotel rooms have sounded a liiiitle bit like there might be a small waves of that, not like full-blown. Another is that he just isn't strongminded and even if it feels like it say to yourself that you are not dying it's withdrawals (you can die from alcohol and benzo ones but you still shouldn't feed the tought for body feeling like dying and mind trying to go all over the place, anxiety and blabla).

It might not be as so cut and dry-he probably has gaps in his memory due to alcohol poisoning/alcoholism. On Somethings Burning, Burt said he was "shaking all day" because he hadn't had a drink yet. Dude is getting into liver issue territory. I struggled with alcohol for a long time and screwed up my liver. Had the same issues, then I started having seizures (instead of hangovers) because I was going through withdrawals. And you can die from withdrawing from alcohol. Bert is getting way too close to that sun. There's not a lot of things I'm informed about, but alcoholism is something I know way too much about

Bert’s problem isn’t with alcohol, it’s with the thought of being in a world that doesn’t fit his every whim and want by the second, filled with laughing faces calling him “The Machine” unironically. The alcohol is always secondary to his need for attention, just a way to shut out the voices in his head calling him a fat loser who nobody wants to be around (which simultaneously share headspace with the superiority complex like most narcissists, go figure). It doesn’t take a psychology degree to understand something we’ve likely all seen firsthand: the life of the party who on the inside is just a obnoxious whore for the spotlight, with nothing more to find but anger and contempt for those willing to call them out.

Which is the case with most attention seekers. It seems to me he’s so desperate of approval and to fit in with the other big guys of comedy(big, figuratively, not literally physically big) on top of his alcoholism and weight struggles is causing him to spiral and he’s cracking under the pressure. The pressure is self imposed for the most part, but that’s part of mental illness/instability. Hopefully he has real friends to help him get thru this as well as his family because I also think the fact that he has friends that would spike his drink without a second thought secretly chips away at him, like these ppl he wants approval from, don’t actually care for the real him.

Bert is a great comic for the regular person who barely cares about comedy. He probably puts on a fun, party atmosphere show at the arena. For those of us who are more in tune with the American comedy scene, he’s not nearly as good as people like Tim Dillon, Shane Gillis, Nick Mullen, Normand, etc. But I’m just happy to see American comics doing so well. I bought tickets to Fully Loaded bc I live in a resort town in northern michigan and nothing comes here; I also thought Shane, Dan soder, Mark normand and Dave attell were performing. They didn’t. When I found out the lineup changed I was really upset but the show was actually a great time and I laughed way more than I thought I would. Big Jay, Luiz and fortune were all hilarious. Bert was only on for like 25 I think? It was actually a pretty good show and I don’t seek him out (nice way to put it lol) I’d bet this whole thing is going to turn into a cash grab to film him going to rehab and turning the whole “get healthy” thing into his new brand.
