Read the bible? I started reading, and within a minute I learned that the earth's day / night cycle existed before the sun was created. Didn't see much sense in reading any further after that.

There's the book, and then there's the reader. The intentions, feelings, openness, intelligence, etc, play as much role in the outcome, as much as the book. For example, I'm Christian, but I don't take genesis as an exact, scientific description of the start of the universe. It's just a best attempt by early man to understand our origins. In that sense, it's a very interesting historical book. I find all of the early sacred books of different religions interesting from an academic sense, but also, from an experiential level. If you immerse yourself in the characters, stories, and visuals, you enter into a different reality. Lol, two people watch a movie, one says how amazing it was, it really changed their life. The other looks at him, thinking, but the directing was terrible, they should have shortened the mid section, actor X was too short for the roll, and overall, he knew it wasn't any good and he left early cause his expectations were right.

@jasonmurray5902 you seem to think that the only way of seeing the Bible is in a literal sense and that if one doesn't see it that way, then they must be of a different religion or I am assuming, you think that they should be an atheist. It's a very black and white viewpoint. With all the differing denominations that all call themselves Christian, you haven't considered that perhaps, there are variations of views and understandings of the Bible. The Bible is not a scientific book full of facts. It's incomplete, not a single word was written by Jesus, etc, no one knows if it's accurate in it's entirety, which is why the Bible is a document that requires faith. I have faith that it is accurate to a large extent, but no one was there to be able to verify it. I'm comfortable with that. A lot of Christians outside the more conservative fundamentalist versions have a 'live and let live' view of the Bible and religion. Let's be honest too, if selective reading of the Bible meant that one couldn't be Christian, then none of us are Christian, cause we all see the Bible from our particular view of it. Perhaps I misunderstood you.

When an Indian, an American, and a Saudi use math to solve algebra problems, they all arrive at the same answers. However, when the same people use faith to answer religious questions, they come up with vastly different answers. When there's a god who's sending people to hell for eternity for choosing the wrong religion, being able to accurately choose the correct religion becomes enormously important.

Science is a great tool and I love it, but it is the wrong tool for understanding God. Or in the case of Buddhists, Nothingness. Human beings are having an experience which is unexplanable. Individually and in group settings, depending on their maturity, intellectual, wisdom, life experience, etc, will explain that experience differently. This goes for atheists too. There should be a sign we can hang up that says, 'please be patient, while we deal with technical issues'.
