As an Australian, I am disgusted that wait staff have to rely on tips to have a liveable wage. Why does the employer not pay them a decent wage in the first place?? That is not allowed here, it is illegal as we have a decent minimum wage, and tips are not necessary. The employer should be paying the full wages of their staff, not the customers. It is disgraceful!!! The first time that I was ever in San Francisco, the staff just never brought our change back after handing over cash to,pay for our dinner. So we didn’t even get to decide what the service was worth, it’s a joke!!

There’s a reason why the Hip Hop community has always had such a deep reverence for Mos Def. That guy was smart, WAY before it was cool to be smart. NWA, Public Enemy, Mos Def and SO many more. They tried to tell us. The told us the stories. They tried to warn us, that all those institutions would get worse, before they EVER got better. They saw it coming…funny thing is, they saw it coming years before WE saw it coming. They saw what all these institutions had done to them, and they saw them slowly reaching their arms out and getting its claws around everyone. NOW look at us. We’re beholden to, what…6-7 families in this country. The technological revolution was SUPPOSED to free us. What did we do with it? Created 3-4 more hyper-wealthy families who pretty much control the tech industry. Yeah, there’s little things that can be done. But let’s be real, if you don’t have a computer lab, science lab or SOMETHING, what are the odds that you’ll create something big, that you can pass on generational wealth? We’re left with sports and entertainment (hence all the kids aspiring to be influencers…it’s this generation’s “TV Show Boom” of the 60’s and 70’s. That’s what they’re left with. Guess who saw this coming, and tried to warn us? Things like “F*ck Tha Police”, “Fight The Power” and…(you see where I’m going with this). They saw, because that’s what the black community had as the only real “option” for getting out of the hood. It’s been like that, for that community since the day the slaves were freed. But, alas…we didn’t listen. And here we are…

Thank you for this! I absolutely adore Mr. Bey. Brilliant man and one of the only emcees with a sparkle in his eye when he rhymes. Black on Both Sides changed my whole damn life. A young white female hiphopper needed to look much closer and learn about the black experience and art forms before treading on sacred ground. And I had came to hip-hop with reverence and love, but I knew fucking nothing about being in someone else’s house. His thoughts and words, and that record taught me to shut up and think critically.
