While major news networks have struggled to figure out the right way to cover the Trump administration, political satirists like Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers have demonstrated why comedy can be such a powerful antidote to bullshit.

The first few months of the Trump administration have been a goldmine for late-night comedians and political satirists. Shows like Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Saturday Night Live, and Late Night With Seth Meyers have enjoyed ratings boosts thanks to their regular lampooning of the Trump White House.
But beyond the jokes and sight gags, political satirists have done an excellent job of seriously covering the Trump administration - sometimes even better than major TV news networks. And that’s because while traditional journalists feel compelled to take President Trump’s often absurd statements and conspiracy theories seriously, political satirists have demonstrated an extremely low tolerance for bullshit.

There simply isn't enough real news being reported to warrant 24/7 coverage from "Professional Journalists" or pundits. True journalism has a high standard to uphold, even if most of society has been conditioned to dismiss it. Professional TV journalism died with Peter Jennings. At his worst, he was boring. The real issue is that for journalism ~not what goes on the 24 hours mind you but actual honest to god journalism~ is a slow, methodical process that can take years to fully uncover the story. Most people neither have the patience nor the tolerance for that so instead they just go and listen to what they want to hear from their source of choice so as to reinforce their preconceived point of view.

+Ze Germanz Touché. The issue that I'm taking is that much of what was unappealing about Hillary Clinton was her hard-left rhetoric on different -isms and -phobias. You're placing her on the center right, which is reasonably true when it comes to economic policy, but that ignores many of the cultural, social, and rhetorical factors which made her look decidedly left-wing in a way unappealing to most Americans. You seem to be adopting the narrative that "the left" would have won the nomination for the Democrats, but that's an oversimplification. While Sanders had working class appeal, that was driven just as much by his pro-worker rhetoric as it was by his actual policies. Additionally, he was relatively conservative in many cultural and social regards. For instance, his hesitance to support gun control made plenty of rural red-state voters comfortable where they otherwise wouldn't have been. Further, while you might think that massive taxation and Scandinavian-style welfare programs would be popular, that's probably distorted by the "bubble" you're in. While the rust belt was relatively sympathetic to that rhetoric, the majority of the country is still far to the right of Sanders on economic issues; there's only a clear consensus in urban and coastal bubbles.

Hillaries biggest problems was that she assumed that the american people were smarter then they actually were, since trump was basically promising a new golden age for nothing (despite having zero experience in politics or even applicable private sector industries for that matter) and enough electoral colleges bought it that he was able to slither into the white house. The other half of it (tied into the first) was that hillary did a shitty job of defending herself from the various stupid assaults on her character that came her way.

Great episode! I do get much of my "news" from the late-night comedy monologues (but, I also take the newspaper...but, not my local newspaper, because it isn't very good. The closest "good" newspaper is the LA Times, so we take that.)
