CNN treats politics like sports - and it’s making us all dumber

When you treat politics like a game, you’re going to end up with news coverage that cares more about drama than it does about the truth.
Follow Strikethrough on Facebook! / carlosmazavox
CNN has modeled it's political coverage after shows like ESPN's "First Take," pitting commentators against each other to argue about the day's news stories. That makes for cheap and entertaining television, but in the Trump era, it's turned CNN into a circus of bullshit and misinformation.

There is nothing different there. CNN is like this not because they are evil or greedy, but because they exist because they make money. The make money because they attract viewers. And they attract viewers by sensationalistic coverage of exciting things. The aspects described in the video can be found at every kind of news media, it's anavoidable.
@neeneko
@neeneko 7 жыл бұрын
Well, not quite unavoidable. There has been some good research on the impact of funding models, with advertiser funded news coverage tending to be more sensationalistic while subscription or directly funded news coverage being more subdued and researched. It is unavoidable in an era of 'free' news where the costs are indirect via ads, but not unavoidable in an absolute sense.

It's important because in the recent presidential election, both sides were giving a bombardment of false information. So many americans were tricked into voting for one candidate over another based on false info provided by the opposing party posing as a "credible" source. AKA CNN, FOX, and the myriad of trash from facebook and other social media sources like BuzzFeed and other horrible sources. Vox is ok though. Neil Postman predicted this back in his 1985 book, Amusing Ourselves to Death. Here is what Postman predicted would happen if politics became dominated by commercial television: The effect on political life will be devastating. There will be less emphasis on issues, substance, and ideology, and an increase in the importance of image and style. Politicians will have greater concern for moment-to-moment shifts in public opinion, less concern for long-range policies. Unless the use of television for political campaigns is strictly prohibited, elections may be decided by which party spends more on television and media consultants. *_The line between political life and entertainment will blur, and movie and television stars may be taken seriously as political candidates_*

So you end up having a ton of people who are very comfortable with things as they are all in one place who will never challenge any type of hegemonic power unless it runs counter to their own, which is entwined with the rich and powerful. It should be noted that CNN doesn't use this "politics like sports" approach for all their programming. Unfortunately, they use it excessively for all their primetime shows, where more people are watching. I really wish they would model more of their shows after "The Lead with Jake Tapper", or at least give his show a primetime spot. It consists of local, national, and world segments, has a lot of onsite reporters, and minimizes panels. More traditional, less drama. Tapper as a host is also pretty good at calling out bullshitters and making sure for the most part those bullshitters don't become recurring figures on his show.

As a child I used to think that everything in the news was true, but as I got older, more educated, and looked deeply into politics, I realized that money plays a huge role in government, industries, and other programs. I thought that the morals I learned from the children's books that my teachers read to me were the same morals that people aspired to in adult life: that people did things to "actually" help others, to solve "this" problem, to improve "that" issue, etc... But there were bigger driving forces that seemed more important and those very things affected everything that was part of our lives. For example, the history that we learn in school... That left out a lot of things and twisted it in ways that seem more appealing (not all the time, but more than it should). It's all about perspective. The sciences that explain how the world works and all of its logic - I used to think "this is ALL true and everybody should know this for their own reasoning of the world" - was discovered by humans (not created), meaning statistically, it can be disproved if there was human error in the discovery. Nonetheless, most of it is true and you grow up to see that there are so many people -adults too - that still deny it. But why would someone go against rational thinking? Let me tell you, when someone says climate change is fake or there isn't any more to learn from space, there's a reason that their hiding and that is money, power, and brainwashing people to get your support. Oil companies and other non-renewable energies exists for money. When you can persuade people EPA and NASA don't need more funding, military gets the money. When you talk about change, you trigger people's natural instict to be optimistic even when it's the exact opposite. So back to the point of the media, news channels and other sources will give out information - knowing that many people won't take the time actually research for themselves - to create and force their perspective to the viewers. Yet there are still sources that can give a near-unbiased with factual information but never completely unbiased because interviews and expert opinions come into play. What CNN does gets me pissed because them treating politics like sports provokes viewers and commenters to do so as well, so now you end up with people seeing different views as enemies and act as if politics won't alter the actions of the governments not just here, but around the world too. When you make a mistake in a sport, it doesn't affect the population's daily lives as would a mistake in the decisions of the government, which are highly influenced by the people. If people don't know what true or fake, serious or entertaining, significant or bullshit, what the point in having a say in anything? Many parents, teachers, police, presidents try to do the best to make the world better (or at least make it SEEM better), and it usually works - for kids, I guess - but then there's reality, once you develop and see life deeper. Right then and there, you see the parents being bad examples and hypocrites, teachers having sexual relations with students, police being brutal when they're supposed to be safe, and presidents... You get the point. This leads me to ask "WHY?". Why would someone actually do things to be a good person or because it's the right thing to do? To make life better seems to be the only rational answer I can think of and in my opinion - common sense. Why would someone do otherwise? Probably for the opposite reason... It's so simple to know what's right, but putting it into action just impossible, I guess. Why do I even bother?

I think I have the same point of view as you, I would even ad more if I had words to. I live in Brazil and things here are, putting it simply, tense. Seeing how unfair the world is makes me Wonder why people try hard to do the right thing... I guess It's because all of us have flaws, but still we want to make the world better. LOL I never comment on yt but this time I had to! Tnx 4 posting this comment and Sorry 4 the bad english.

Bullshit! That garbage turned me right away from both of em! I felt like my intelligence was getting dissed, cause I could tell they were both trying to keep me hooked. Found CNN to be more honest, but they do have a bad habit of nitpicking (...about how he's drinking his water? Really?). It is frequently overstated though. It's done fairly infrequently. But that's too often for me. Best taken in small doses. Fox I can't stand period because... Sean, and Jeanine, are just the _worst_ kinds of creepy. The kind that wants to dehumanize other people for what I'm certain is no good reason. Fox airs them... so I take my viewership elsewhere. They're sick.

Marc, that's pretty presumptive seeing as you don't really know *how* it affects OP. I'm assuming you meant confirmation bias but conformation bias is also a pretty nice play on words. From what I understand a critique on the problems of a media company that the company itself acts like its against seems to be pretty centrist. Also whats wrong with progressive leaning lenses, so long as you view things from conservative leaning ones as well?

Marc Macaluso Does whether or not this "omission" occur as a deliberate act or not matter to you? If so, how can you determine that from a single sentence, at least reliably enough that you're not potentially jumping to conclusions? If not, why would you expect people to bring up topics you deem relevant before you ever even enter the conversation? They wrote a single sentence in their comment. How is that enough information to determine if the omission was intentional or not, with at least some degree of accuracy? I am actually interested in your answer, because if you do have a valid one, that could be valuable information. (Also, active listening and asking clarifying questions are generally more reliable ways of gathering information than relying on an absence of information, especially when there is little information to go on in the first place, or if the lack of information does not indicate a "gap" that conveys specific information, in the way the process of elimination does, for instance.)

Vox is liberal af, and yeah, their biased. but that doesn't mean they are wrong or lying, it just means they will cover topics they feel are important and give it their opinions but they don't hide their bias. All major news sources are bias one way or another anymore (thanks to the power gifted to them by the by our parents who would seemingly do anything to idolize anyone with a public image) and the best coverage is from multiple sources on both sides. Its the only way to make an informed decision. Being biased isn't wrong, disguising it and neglecting differing facts is.

Centrism can be manipulated by its nature. If either the right or the left begins sprinting toward extremism, it can pull the centre to one side or another. That normalizes one side's behavior while alienating the others. It can, has and will go both ways, which is why it's not a good long term solution. Sources just need to be clear and honest about their particular biases.
