Mark Arandjus I am Russian and i would like to try to sort out what phrase Gorbachev exactly used, but sadly i can't, because audio at 3:09 seems to be montaged for some reason (there is a bit of lip desync). What sounds in russian is "Это был обнажённый нерв" - "It was a raw nerve". So what Gorbachev meant is only on translators conscience, but it looks like he tried to smile right after.
