Oh my gosh. My grandfather always told me "Raisins are rabbit droppings". I would never eat them after that. Never had them in my house! My daughter came home from kindergarten all excited because they had oatmeal raisin cookies, and they were "so good'. She asked me why we never had cookies with raisins? "they are just dried grapes". I was adult and still believed my grandfather. If you couldn't trust your grandfather, who could you?

My Mom made hers with finely grated carrots, raisins, milk and sugar. That's it and we loved it. The milk turned orange and we loved it too. LOL

I never thought I would be saying that a man would teach me something but here I go you taught me to mix the mayonnaise with the powdered sugar that I think that is very smart. I always just put it in the bowl and mixed it all up and it does make a difference, when you don’t mix it up and mix it up. And I thank you very much for that.

So many different memories pop up from our childhood. I'm 69 years old, and I still love watching the animated Christmas shows every year. It throws me back in my in my memories when I was a child sitting on my father's knee. Just like reading the night before Christmas Story every year. My mother used to make this salad at least once a week. My dad would say that the dark raisins were roaches, which made my brother like it even more. My mom made carrot salad quite often. It was a little different than yours, but oh so good. She would sometimes chip apple up in it. And she used sugar instead of powdered sugar. I do so enjoy the variety of food.

My Mom was so health-conscious we never had added sugar except for desserts. Carrots, dark raisins, mayo and walnuts. Occasionally diced apple. Love the pineapple which I too discovered at the smorgasbord restaurants. A great end-of-the-week salad when the lettuce was used up.

My hubby used to enter chuck wagon competitions in the 90’s. It was one of his hobbies. One of the dishes he made was spotted pup (bread pudding). My youngest was about 3 years old and spent alot of time with our goats. One day when my husband picked up the lid from the Dutch oven to check on the spotted pup, my son just happened to be next to him and asked “Daddy, why did you put goat poo poo in there?” We told that story for years after that every time he made it! My nasty neighbour who was a bully, put rabbit poop in a Sunmaid Raisins box and fed them to me. I was three years old he was much older. Needless to say it created a HUGE KERFUFFLE!!! I went screaming into our house with chewed rabbit poop spilling out of my mouth. Of course my mom had company!!! This story became legendary!!! 🐇 🥹

Maybe you could use actual grapes instead of raisins??? Might be wonderful! Other people have said their mama used chopped up apples; others said pecans; one person even said their mama put miniature marshmallows. No reason you can't make it your own! Blessings!

I haven’t had this salad since I was a kid (about 45+ years ago). My mom made it with only coarsely grated carrots, dark raisins and mayo, and all of us kids hated it! However, as an adult, I may try it with golden raisins or craisins, double pineapple, nuts, and the powdered sugar in the mayo. I just don’t want the sweetened mayo to taste like Miracle Whip, which I can’t stand. Another salad that my mom made that I do like is frozen pea, red onion, cheese, bacon, and mayo salad. I actually added the bacon pieces to it. Have you ever had that salad?

Laughing about the dark raisins. I won't use them because as a kid I was told that they used the rotten grapes to make the regular ones. When I use golden raisins, I can tell easily if there's a clunker in there! Yes to this day and I'm older than you!!! LOL! My mom also liked carrot salad but she used either Spin Blend or Miracle Whip. I can't stand the taste of either of those! I'm super picky about a few things but when I get called on it I list all the veggies and meats I will eat when they won't. Rabbit is delicious!

My mom always made this when I was a child. I will normally buy the cheapest raisins but golden are my favorite. I've never made it with any sugar, just real mayo. My mom would heat a pan of water up on the stove and soak her raisins for a short bit to soften and plump them up and then drain. I also do the same. I like think this salad is best made the night before so the flavors incorporate together and the carrots soften a bit. Love carrot salad!

Carrots, pineapple, and raisins are sweet. I would think that would make it sweet enough. Most people eat too much sugar. I think I would like it your way better. I like things a little less sweet than most people do.
