Warm Fruit Salad - A Simple Fruit Salad that’s so easy to make!

If you add mandarin orange slices and sweetened shredded coconut to this fruit salad, you've got ambrosia. I'm 75 years old and that's what I grew up on. Every holiday table at my grandmother's house had a big beautiful cut crystal bowl filled with ambrosia. Golly I haven't thought about that in years. It's time we bring back fruit salads and ambrosia. Thanks Tom and Melissa for rekindling some sweet memories. 😊

Melissa, I'm 81 and my mom always had to add cherries to the fruit salad because there were three children and at most there were three and one half cherries per can. This tactic avoided children drama at the dinner table😂

Oh no! I can't buy your cookbook or I won't need to watch your channel for recipes! And I LOVE to watch! I only found you a few months ago and I have made many of your recipes to the delight of my family and church! Thank you for your wonderful presence and talent! By the way, if you need grapes and they are not in season or you can't find good ones, when they are plentiful and yummy, I freeze them. They freeze easily and still taste wonderful after thawing!

My Grandma used to make such a fruit salad, warm and comforting! Aversion....yes due to being fed fruit cocktail too much in school lunches and from our mom's! My Grandma used to put small marshmallows and shredded coconut in it, too! Some people add pecans or chopped cashews.

This is a compote that can be totally a part of every meal you mentioned. Compote was a staple of menus from the Renaissance to Edwardian England and this is a modern version. I love fruit salads, especially with meals that include pork or chicken. Thank you for a stellar addition to my cookbook that I can enjoy in colder months.

Tom, my mother (back in the 70’s) during special occasions would make a fruit cocktail “salad”. It was delicious, I think it was probably 1-2 cans of fruit cocktail mixed with 1-2 pkgs of softened cream cheese. She put it in a baking dish for it to set while in the freezer until it was solidly frozen she’d cut squares and serve them on a dessert plate for each setting with 2-3 full leaves of iceberg lettuce. Very tasty I haven’t had it for 40+ yrs lol.

Oh my goodness! I feel like I’ve seen variations of most foods and recipes but this was new! I’ve never heard of this or would have dreamed to try and poor something hot over my fruit. Now I’m gonna have to try it! It looks delicious and it’s so pretty. I have to giggle though, when Tom cracked that egg into the sauce I was floored and thought, oh Tom raw egg over fruit?!?! Hahaha. We also have a jello salad we make with canned mandarin oranges, crushed or tidbits pineapple, and marshmellows. It then takes the pineapple juice to make a pudding. Cool it then mix those ingredients together. In the meantime make a 9×13 pan of jello, lemon or orange. Before serving spread the fruit mixture over the set jello. So delicious. My favorite at family get together. I've also added coconut to the fruit mixture.

Of course I can’t speak for other people, but the reason I have an aversion to fruit cocktail is that it is so processed. I like fresh fruit, not processed. It has a tin taste to it as well. It has an odd texture to it as well. We’re all different and some like it so good for them. ☺️

I make "Frogs Eye Salad" also called Acini de Pepe Salad. It's very similar, but also has cool whip and is served cold. It's all good. AND fruit cocktail did have more cherries in when I was a kid! They have to cut costs somewhere.

That fruit cocktail sauce/juice could be saved to put on ice cream! Now, Melissa... Why you never told Tom this wasn't your recipe!? 🤣 My mother makes a, similar, fruit salad. I believe hers is pineapple, banana and mandarin oranges. I believe she mixes in all the fruit juice and sauce but I don't believe she mixes anything else in. We have never had any problem with refrigerating it, but leftovers don't last very long. This is due to the bananas if there's enough left for too long - or - due to it being eaten.

Hey friends, it's been awhile! Hope you have been able to dig out from under all that snow this past week and are staying warm best you can! Anyway this salad looks absolutely wonderful. I love fruit salad much more than vegetable. The only thing I'm wondering is if you could use the fruit cocktail juice for the dressing instead of the pineapple. I like pineapple but I just love the fruit cocktail juice even more lol. I was also thinking of adding extra peaches because I love those and then I could use the peach juice for the dressing maybe. I would still try it with the pineapple juice but I just have a special place in my heart for those other juices! 😊
