Timballo Casserole - Hearty Italian Pasta - Feeds a Crowd

Timballo Casserole - Hearty Italian Pasta
olive oil
40 oz Marinara Sauce
8 oz spaghetti
1 cup onion, diced
1 green pepper, diced
4 oz can mushroom pieces
2 oz can sliced black olives
1 cup pepperoni slices, diced
9 oz box frozen chicken strips, thawed and cooked
16 oz package shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Parmesan cheese
 Preheat oven to 350°. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain spaghetti and stir in marinara sauce. Mix in onion, pepper, mushrooms, black olives, pepperoni, and cooked chicken.  Pour into a cast-iron skillet or a 9 x 13 baking dish. Top with Mozzarella Cheese and sprinkle generously with Parmesan Cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until lightly browned around edges.

Its like a baked pasta version of a supreme pizza. I like thin spaghetti as well because it "behaves" better on the fork...plus there's more surface area for more sauce to coat the pasta.

We made this today and also water sautéed the veggies first. Used fresh mushrooms. Made homemade sauce over the weekend and needed to start using it up.😅 Used vegan chik'n strips and vegan mozz. No oil, just laid it on parchment paper in the pan. Delicious.

Made this tonight for my friends and it was so good. I added Garlic Paste about 1 1/2 tablespoons, thyme 1 tablespoon and Basil 1 1/2 tablespoon...It was a hit, so good!! Her husband had seconds, so he liked it.

I’ve never heard of this dish before but I’m certainly going to put it on my list of recipes to cook. This reminds me of a rigatoni dish I’ve had in the past where it was cooked for several hours on low and slow. You have made this dish quick and easy by using precooked ingredients. It’s got to be good because it’s pasta and cheese and Rao’s sauce. Thanks for sharing a family favorite. Can’t wait to try it!

Well, I did it. I made my version of timballo. I say me version as I take recipes as suggestions and bend them to what I have. Instead of spaghetti noodles I used whole wheat linguine noodles. I got a pack of chicken strips from Walmart, great value, 16 oz so I used it all. Got a 6oz jar of mushrooms and used half. 3.8 oz can of black olives and used them all. 6 oz pack of pepperoni and used it all. No green peppers as they don’t agree with my wife’s stomach. First mistake, I salted my pasta water and you told me not to. Second mistake, I used the whole bag of pepperoni. 1/2 will do next time. One 23oz jar of marinara- should have used 2. All that said, I mixed it all together, added the cheeses and baked it in my 11 inch by three inch pan. It was too salty but wonderful and marvelous. Yes, that’s a big batch. But it is tasty and I can see why you and your wife love it. I will make it again. Thank you, it was an easy recipe for a beginner like me and is so good.

It’s not a reply but further comment. The second day with the timballo was better. The salt and spices had a chance to spread out and overall flavor is much improved. It will be added to my list of dishes I can do. I’ll make the changes I mentioned and probably skip the Parma cheese. It didn’t add anything for us.

Timballo is the Italian name for the timpani drum. It’s sometimes cooked in a Bundt pan or angelfood cake pan. Some people bake it in a pie crust; others just put bread crumbs on top or a layer of eggplant on the top and sides. However, even the Italians make it in a rectangular casserole pan for convenience.

Here's another recipe that I've added to my list to cook/bake. I, too, can easily see where this wouldn't need any salt added. My gracious, I cannot wait to make this Italian casserole. We are so used to making recipes for a big family. We are almost empty nesters and I have to learn how to cut down. I have found it sad to have to cut down and be empty nesters. I'm used to cooking for a big crowd especially being raised in restaurants. It's sad for only two or three people and it's hard to cut down on the recipes. However, we do still keep it bigger quantities cuz all of us like to take lunch to work the next day. Plus, sometimes we have leftovers and can come home and eat the leftovers without having to cook that night. So tired and exhausted after work
