I think I know the reason why there's a surge of Evil Superman concepts as of late. It's because Superman, in his very core, is a man who does the right thing not for any altruistic means but because it's the right thing to do, period. He represents what we're supposed to be to one another, how we should help each other out no questions asked, how we should be selfless, how we should be kindness towards our fellow man, how we should be virtuous and how we should show restraint. He's a paragon of what humanity should strive to be. But there in lies the problem. Some comic book critics, comic book fans, etc. don't like how Superman represents something they're not: humanity can be selfish, humanity can be vindictive, humanity can be greedy, humanity can be impulsive, and humanity, above all else, can be cruel. But the one thing that holds us back is immense power, something that Superman has. People, especially nowadays, don't like to be reminded of something that they're not, how their attitude is not right or what they're doing is wrong so they go with characters that seem more relatable or seem "realistic", like the Punisher, Red Hood, or in this case, Evil Superman. It's kinda funny it reminds of what Joker said in The Dark Knight: "I took Gotham's White Knight and brought him down to our level." Evil Superman represents what happens if humainty had all the power in the universe and still had their sinister attributes, the greed, the vindictiveness, the selfishness, the cruelty. He represents glaring flaws of man without any limitation stopping him. I don't think it's a healthy mindset for fans to have that Superman is man who is just one bad day away from being a tyrant. I think the best representation of the Man of Steel is STAS and comics that highlight his characteristics, not his strength but his pure heart.

Well said bro, if I will add anything I will say people are in a spectrum from the extreme virtuous to extreme evil. So it took me forever to realize that in Injustice, the reason Superman was able to kill Shazam was... it was Billy Batson. Because Billy is like 18-20 by the time of the doubles coming over, he is a full ass adult. So when he is trying to say Shazam, he is trying to turn into his superhero form so Superman just killed some no-powered kid which makes that scene so much worse realizing he let himself be in his depowered form around Superman and the others because he trusted them.

I think its because Superman's upbringing sets the standard. The simplest thing some of these Evil Supermen lack is parents. They didn't have responsible, good people to teach them values. Homelander had no parents, the press is the closest thing he'll have for support. Omni Man is a soldier dedicated to his people. Those values were taught to both he and his people. Yet neither of them had John or Martha Kent. (Tho Omni Man's got Mark as his anchor)

I say watch Superman and Lois, right now it's the only well-written Superman property in the last few years. Everyone is so cynical, jaded and nihilistic about life and feels the need to take everything down that is good with it just so we can feel better about ourselves when Comics,TV and Movies are at their core about *fiction, fantasy and escapism* and to cut out that sense of *imagination* and drag us into the real world which sucks defeats the purpose. I generally don't like a lot of these "deconstruction" pieces that they're doing because at this point it's beating a dead horse and the brains are all over my pants right now it's a dime a dozen in times like these require an actual *Good Superman*

I think the stories about an "Alternate Superman" is that it is not immediately about the character being inherently evil. It is able to explore Nature vs Nurture dilemmas. Moral Dilemmas where the end goal in "noble/good" but the means are not how Superman would approach it if it were him. And that allows for a good story exploration. With characters like say Batman. The main thing about him is he is a regular human hero fighting with gods who refuses to kill (and has access to any gadget/solution due to science or riches). To change his morals, you'd only be "deleting" the line where he doesn't kill and he could be anyone. Ozymandias is an immediate character I could think of but I don't place him in the same "level" as a Batman, so it makes him less of a (enticing) character study/exploration. With Captain America less just and fair, it will just be a war mongering cap. So basically Punisher. Make him evil, then he is like Red Skull himself right? That's my take with the question as to why there are a lot of alternate Superman stories. But I wouldn't call the "Evil Superman analogues". There is a difference I feel in this concept.

Unlike other evil superman, omniman had a reason as to why he killed the guardians of the globe, why he wanted to conquer the earth. The only thing that stopped him from being truly evil is because of how much time he spent on earth with a person that he truly loved and had a loving family which he did not want to be ruined. Yes Nolan loves Debbie. It's not that they forget, but it's the fact that that was all in the last decade. Batman had pure evil versions only recently, while people making alternate Supermen evil for decades: from Superboy Prime to the Authority to the Boys to Invincible, with many more before, in-between, and probably more in three future. Batman is often just shown as paranoid, and usually the writer will make it look justifiable because Superman exists.

I think the reason why superman consistently is used as a representation of a good guy going evil is superman in dc comics has always been presented as the greatest and best of dc hes the one you always will expect to say he will find another way instead of resorting to more morally compromising choices hes just such a good person so casually and normally that hes genuinely in world universe ending events actually chosen the path of less resistence or even sometimes attempt to defuse the entire situation when litterally all those around him just say lets just kill it or something like that or just lock it up its that hope that things can be better is what makes people turn superman evil so much because its just such an intriging idea what happens when the absolute best representation of good in dc comics goes evil and turns all that hope and love into hate and rage

I'm currently working on a Superman-type character in my superhero comic series, "The Kids", but he's not evil. He's a true symbol of peace and justice: He always smiles, always happy to lend a helping hand, and respects people -- even when that person is a total A-hole.

Simple: Superman is a symbol of hope to the world, in the dc universe, the justice league can die but if Superman dies the world goes panic mode, and so because Superman is a symbol of hope is why he is the greatest, taking hope and making it gore, is an awesome experiment, they want to show a different Superman, but instead of hope, they are evil for other mcs to stop them or cause they sell, so that’s why homelander and Omni man sold, but it’s not why they can’t top Superman

Its just a spin on Power which is really the main thing...for Clark it’s difficult because he was raised differently in fact he was raised well, certain circumstances, but overall it’s down to Jonathan and Martha...man I tear up a little with that; “Perfectly Good parents” are hard to come by now a days not because every parent is evil, but because most parents don’t have the time anymore, responsibilities ya see and pressure for family, for their livelihoods. For Clark the struggle was always about keeping himself “Human” what it meant to be “Human” what it meant to “Control” every aspect of yourself and come out as a better person not to simply be looked up to but for you to at the end of your journey say that you did good, you changed things for the better as little as it may be; ironic as it is with his scale of power. Him and Bruce have an understanding of the rules, but for Clark it’s more difficult and Bruce understands it somewhat; ordinary people can’t always choose that route cause They don’t have those powers but for Clark it’s always open but he chooses to shut it out most of the time and thats why they’re best friends they know what it’s like to stare at that door and have the courage to close it and say no. It’s difficult especially for people you grow to hate and resent, is it always “following the rules is good”? No, I think one of the reasons he follows those rules to begin with is to also show that even if those rules aren’t perfect you can always show that if you follow the rules enough you can completely beat your enemy at their own game and at the same time prove that fairness can be found in laws that are imperfect as long is it gives a fighting chance to the innocent even if others look to them as guilty, it’s not always a success but he tries that first before anything else. Which is why Mark from Invincible is a fair parallel to Superman than Omniman. As Omniman said himself “...Mark you’ve changed things.” Thats what it was for Clark except at that point there wasn’t an entire Kryptonian population still functioning and dominating worlds as an obsession. Both probably asked or were asked the same thing at some point “What would they have in 10 or 1000 years?” To them it’s clear, they’ll have the people they care about physically, mentally or even dare I say Spiritually, and that’s it, for all their powers they just want something simple in the end, they are people in the end, they latch onto others not to depend on them for every little thing but to find people who could walk beside them as equals.

Comics largely adapt to the times around them. At present the world is quite a cynical place. We’ve been shown that those in power, even more so than yesteryear, have been corrupt and misguided. Here you have this powerful figure… we can’t imagine that someone so powerful could be so good or wouldn’t have skeletons in his closet. It’s a shame because that’s the opposite of what’s needed but that’s all these writers seem to pump out.

I think the reason why we won’t or shouldn’t get an in universe evil Superman is because you need light to have dark. If Superman is evil then what’s the point of all these stories about evil Superman/Superman-like characters. It’s now become such a trope that even some people find the Invincible show as cliche because even if the comic did it first, the show is coming out after so many other movies and shows that use the same idea. If you want evil Superman stories to work, you need Superman to be incorruptible. That switch needs to seem impossible for the story to really grab your attention. It’s more interesting to corrupt the beacon of hope than to corrupt someone who is already halfway there.

Batman is already a villain since he doesn’t kill his villains. He’s an enabler to some of the most dangerous people! Poison ivy wants to kill all humans to save plants. Superman is a lot more human because he has a line that no one can cross. You kill his family and he kills you while Batman…you can do whatever you want with his family and he won’t do a damn thing. Joker crippled Barbra? Nothing. Possibly raped her? Nothing. Jim being forced to see those pictures of his daughter in agony? Nothing. Jason gets killed? Nothing. Joker infects Alfred with a joker toxin and possibly cut the bat families faces off? Nothing. If Superman didn’t kill joker in injustice then Batman would’ve just locked joker up in Arkham only for him to break out again and do something worse. This is the greatest superhero ever? Really? Or is this just fantard shit? I wouldn’t mind the “no kill rule” if they don’t bring it up cause it brings up so many questions and answers make no sense!
